As someone very new to the hobby and trying to do my research before trying to make a few bucks on it, this was really informative. I appreciate it. I think for my purposes the arguments people make about "if the centering is noticeably bad or there's an immediately noticeable white spot" are still pertinent because if my plan is to buy cards from my LGS, starting out from a theoretical 9.5 instead of a theoretical 10 is only shooting myself in the foot before I even leave the store. I've heard a lot of things about getting cards from tcgplayer to try and get graded and they're just awful. So for someone who doesn't have a lot of wiggle room for mistakes this early, I think its important to do everything I can to ensure I'm leaving the store with as near perfect cards as I can detect. The other thing to consider, too, is that the vast majority of people are not nearly as experienced as you are. So I think its perfectly reasonable to assume a handicap. That is to say, I have to work on the assumption that I'm missing something pretty much all the time because I just don't have the experience. So if I make that assumption and also I can see a flaw clearly with my baby eyes, then I'm far more likely to hit 9's. But if I can leave the store with a card I see absolutely nothing wrong with no matter how much I scrutinize it, I still make the assumption I missed something. But that's ok because 1 small something will still get me a 10 (usually).
🏆 super helpful. I realized after watching your vid. that I’ve maybe been too critical “pre grading” my cards. Luckily I haven’t sorted which cards I will and will not be sending yet😅
What an incredible video thanks Dan, I’ve always been scared to grade as I’ve looked for cards to be absolutely perfect but maybe I’ll give it a go now once I’ve got enough cards I want to send off!
Some of the points that you said about whitening or centering could probably have been highlighted better if the video quality for the cards was a bit more HD, but I really enjoyed the informative breakdown regardless! 🏆
Ima try a graded play cause of you. I was only doing sealed and s&v chase cards like groudon and others raw. But i bought a psa membership. I got a friend at card store who will tell me what are tens or worthy of sending.
My biggest question is how do they assign graders to orders? I swear I've had some of the toughest graders. And I can message you actual examples and be willing to show you my grading scans but I send cards that should 10 all the time and consistently I've had like a 30-45% gem rate. I wonder if they assign graders alphabetically. So for example "X" grader has ba-cb and "X" grader has sf-tg. And maybe this results in you consistently getting easier grades and I consistently get harsher grading. Just a thought. Great video though, I've been wanting a breakdown like this for a long time. I almost feel like I've had better results at bgs.
@KetchumAllCollectibles lol. Hey I am going to email you sometime soon because I want to start cosigning some stuff with you and I also have some questions on your thoughts about where to send error cards for grading
Follow up question, at what point, or scale, is it worth missing the participation trophy to go black label or pristine hunting. Is the risk of liquidity on failures counteract the w’s 🏆
It's all math. It's always worth it if you hit enough black labels to make thr math work out. Check the global black label rates and see how everyone has done on average
Question. When you do grade, do you always use bulk service no matter what you send and they upcharge you? Or do you use the service youre expecting the card to grade at?
Lol so many cards with a white dot or a slight centering issue I've tossed aside. A few submissions right in a row burnt me on them. Will try a few subs again with a little more leniency and see how they go
How do you handle print lines? Specifically on newer cards I've been encountering full height print lines on the back of cards almost 10% of the time. Is that a full point drop? Half a point? I've been choosing not to grade any with a full print line on the back of a card.
SO, in my most recent CGC submission, 43 of the 55 cards were damaged by them.. they tried claiming that it was damaged during shipping, which i responded that if the package arrived damage, why was i not notified? at first they only offered to refund the cost of grading half of the submission, which i then said it should be at least the cards damaged.. they begrudgingly agreed .. i wanted the cost of the raw cards to be refunded but they refused. They also refused that it was them who damaged the cards, even though all cards had a bent right corner as if someone had dropped the stack of cards on the floor or something. Im disapointed with CGC. whats the point of declared value if its not for insurance purposes?
I don't grade anything that's not at least 48/52 and no white. I'm not too busy to take 2 minutes to scrutinize the card. I've saved many a $20 bill with this approach.
I'm convinced PSA have changed their centering standard from 60/40 to 55/45 which is fine on their end because they always claimed it would be somewhere between those two ratios
Everyone is rich now, thanks Dan
Wait do I need to start grading to become rich? I was just waiting for it to happen on its own. 😂

Buying in store is huge indeed. Not having to deal with grading misses would be nice
Nice to see what you look for when pregrading 😊
Thanks for the plays, never knew emerging powers had such insane margins.

Been scooping gardies like cray hahaha. Super dope play. Got like 5 of them baddies with psa right now 😁
🏆 G'day from Downunder mate

🏆 I got educated so great video
Thanks for watching !
Loved the video, watching on 1.75x speed meant it was the perfect length! 🏆
Thanks Dan, I am now able to purchase that mansion in Hawaii I was eyeing because of this! 🏆
this centering tool is nice and much faster than counting pixels in Microsoft Paint 🏆
You can tell the resolution isn't really there though. But it's something 🤷♂️
Great advice, appreciate the content as always 🏆
Thanks for watching

Yeah I mentioned at the outset I wasn't sure how well it'd capture but I tried my (not very good, but very psa 10) best
PSA for the win 🏆

🏆 I grade way too harsh….according to this information. May have to try some rougher cards with my next submission.
🙏 big numbers no whammies. Try it with 1 card to start and see how it goes. They vary a ton though.
Another tin foil hat theory out there is you throw a sacrificial 9 to make the rest of yours 10s 😆
@@KetchumAllCollectiblesinvariably the sacrificial '9' will also 10 😆
"full half point deduction Dan" 😊

Gonna send some more cards to PSA that I’ve been scrutinizing harshly. Thanks Dan. Will report back

Is it safe to grade with BGS? I really wanted to send some cards but I hear they are going through a bankruptcy?
I just had a sub ship back 🤷♂️
Oh ok, thank u for the reply.@KetchumAllCollectibles

I basically use the appropriate tier for it if it ends up getting an 8. Then take the upcharges if/when they come
@KetchumAllCollectibles dope. Was curious. Thank you 😊

Consistently inconsistent. Wild to me how people skip these over 🤷♂️
@@KetchumAllCollectibles how do you feel about roller lines on the back?

Edge grading

Print lines vary in severity. Faint one I'd say half ish. Can't have much else wrong with the card otherwise it's gonna 9 often
What about the corners that aren’t perfectly rounded? Still grade?
Yep
Do you clean off the cards before sending ?
I usually grade modern stuff that's really clean. I don't use any product just a little spit shine if needed at most

Can we get a 480p zoom cam reveal 🙏🙏🙏
It's 1080 but zoomed in enough to make it act 240p I guess ☠️ . Tbh it's about all you need to see to pre grade with PSA
What do you do with the cards that you don’t grade?
Sell them on tcgp or livestreams
@ Thanks! Is the goal there to break even / minimize loss? I imagine with your following you’re able to at least turn a profit on those cards?
@Bimil-s1l I lose on most I win or breakeven on some. Overall avg a loss on them surely
