  • Concepts cars are made for a variety of reasons. They can cost automakers millions of dollars to make. Sometimes they're made to gauge consumers interest in a new model and other times they're simply a testing ground for innovative technology that's not ready for a mass production vehicle.

    I went to the LA Auto Show in 2001 and I remember seeing all the new concept cars which most auto companies said cars would look like in 10 years. Then came 2011 and all the cars made for mass production didn't look even remotely like any concept car you seen at the auto show.

    • @sethdotson6915
      @sethdotson6915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What I can't seem to understand is why making a production car that resembles its concept prototype is really such a difficult task. It seems like most car companies are paralyzed by a debilitating fear of not sucking. They create concept cars to show everyone that, when they suck, they do so by choice and not by obligation.

    • @yusuftegar6588
      @yusuftegar6588 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sethdotson6915 Based on the video, they said that the concept cars are "idealized" vision of the designer. When they want to produce the actual car, things like safety regulations, cost, manufacturing, technology may not aligned with the idealized vision. Hence why they didn't make the production cars look like the prototype. Also those prototype are usually hand built allowing for more freedom in shaping the car, converting the body shape to mass production using machine may not viable so they change the shape in production car.

    It’s like staging a home to sell. You do it to give people a visual dream, which helps them remember your company when you think of the next car to buy. Also like a Chanel Show, most people won’t buy the whole collection but they will buy the bag because of the exaggeration.

    So where do the concept cars go after they showcased? To the museum? Auction sales for the riches?

      Yeah “museums.” They may be taken back to the manufacture’s headquarters or sold to someone rich but not to be driven because concept cars usually aren’t street legal

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A select few would go to the museum, some get sold to very loaded collectors, & i guess over half would simply get taken back & taken apart. they're, after all, mere showpieces instead of true products.

    All the features that come from concept cars are still very expensive when sold in production cars. In the end most people end up buying cars that can go from a to b. And still has the same tech as a car from 20 years ago.

      Its going to signify a shift in the automotive industry when it SUCCEEDS.
      And all these car manufacturers that have been doing the same thing for decades are going to start thinking how they can keep up.

    I’ve hung out several times with Ralph Gilles. Back in 2006 at Festival of LX’s in Irvine California he stayed at the Double Tree and rode with us to cars and coffee at Crystal Cove the morning before the event. There was a guy there with a modified 300C SRT8. Ralph and I were walking around the car and he walked up to the 50ish rather arrogant owner and said, “Hey nice, I like what you did with your 300.” The owner wasn’t a dick per se but was rather dismissive about the compliment. I couldn’t let this go so immediately after, I walked up to the owner and said, “Do you know who that is? That’s the guy who designed your car.” His jaw dropped and he immediately went over to talk with Ralph. It was pretty cool to be a catalyst for that moment.
