So I have some silver bracelets that have the 925 stamped in them etc but they also have like these little green jewels in bedded in the bracelet do I have to remove all of the little jewels and everything like that before I can melt it down also I did a first melt and apparently I have some iron that's actually melted in my first melt am I just screwed with the iron being embedded in my first melt or is there a way that I could separate the two

You should add a little borax to the silver as you melt it. You should also season the crucible with borax to reduce the porosity and prevent sticking. Glad you have fun with it regardless!
I agree actually did you know that back in the old days they put silver coins in there barrels or buckets of milk to keep it from spoiling and it worked ! The silver created some kind of bacteria that was beneficial to the milk. Or so i was told.
@@tylermckillop408 Actually the silver releases ions that destroy the bacteria. If you put silver on your tongue it can feel tingly because of these ions.
When melting busted chains, take the clasps off first. First, clasps have steel springs, and second you can lot them up and sell them to crafters etc for more than the metal value.
Thank you for this video btw. It’s surprisingly hard to find videos about melting scrap silver and gold that don’t involve expensive furnaces and multi step refining using acids and all that. Very helpful.

Need to get to mine one of these days, especially now while prices are up. Sitting on about 3 POUNDS of electrical silver (assays around 80%). Between that and my ewaste...going to be a good month!!!
I am learning and being taught by a 93yr old Navajo silversmith. Just got 4 of those bowl at a thrift store today and actually I melted a Mexican silver Oz coin w Propane. It was hot enough to do exactly what what just done. Instead of water, try using a muriatic acid solution, 1/4, part acid, always put water in 1st. But this will make that slab so shinny it's not funny.
Great video! I love how you include your wife and how she loves it too! The only thing I would say to change is to add Borax. It will actually help take out impurities and help prevent the silver button from sticking to the cup. I've also heard it also helps protect the the cup and makes it last longer. this should also only be done on silver that is destroyed already, because you will actually get more for silver jewelry.
Isn't it just so satisfying adding to the stash?! 😁 Have you guys ever considered learning how to refine it to pure silver? The trouble with melting hallmarked pieces is that there's no proof anywhere that your buttons are actually sterling..
Refining to pure is pointless unless you like to operate a cell as a hobby. Infact you will come out loosing money in the end. Nitric acid, electricity, time, filters it's not worth it from a financial standpoint. Stamp weight and purity and sell to someone that has an acid test. I always add a few grams of refined crystals to my sterling bars to ensure its at least 925.
Great video! Silver & Gold make the BEST savings accounts in our current times with all of the economic difficulties. Don't ever stop saving that Silver & Gold. It will pay off in the end!
New sub (and new to melting silver) here. If I am doing this outside will I still need a respirator mask? 2. If I don't _buff it_ immediately after melting will it hurt the silver?
When you have silvers coins, is there a way to extract the silver from the coin? Cuz most silver coins are not 100% silver. Cuz i mean you dont want a silver bar with a bunch of other metals in it
Nitric acid, cement with copper, melt to shot, place shot in electrolytic cell and you will have .999 silver, refine again through cell to get .9999 and above. I would just leave them as coins as they are already a known purity and weight.
What results are you getting? Did you glaze your melt dish? Are you using Mapp gas? He didn't use borax, I would. It cleans it up and makes it more fluid.
@@PHUCKyoutube689 I glazed my dish and am using MAP gas. Had 2 torches going at the same time, at full blast, for about 40 minutes and it still wouldn't liquify.

What a bunch of b.s. as far as the price of silver per oz indicated. The last time silver hit $30 an oz was in 2013, but the date of this video is supposed to be 2020
Silver is bout $23/oz today, It’s also fluctuated above and below that the last month. Right now it’s at $23, well couple cents under. And you’re absolutely right, that’s not $30. Unless you live in Canada. I’m about 99% sure these people do. Canadians, like Americans don’t usually think to convert prices or measurements for our neighbours. That being said, $23 US is juuust under $30/oz in Canadian .

you can buy a hallmark stamp and hammer it in. since by nature if you melt sterling you get sterling
