Bob Hope is responsible for Cain's career. Born in London himself Hope set up a yearly scholarship for talented young people from poor families to study theater. Caine was the first winner. During his period of conscription Caine served in Korea and was caught trapped behind Chinese lines. His small group had to fight their way out.

According to Caine's autobiography, he appeared on Bob Hopes show. Afterwards, he asked where his fee was, and found out that Bob Hope had sent it direct to that fund. "You owe them" he simply said to Caine.

In 1966, Michael Caine kept himself busy by filming the following: "Gambit" (w/Shirley MacLaine), "Funeral in Berlin", "Hurry Sundown", and "Woman Times Seven" (again, w/Shirley MacLaine).
In 1967, he kicked off the year by filming his third (and for a long time, his last) Harry Palmer adventure in "Billion Dollar Brain".

@@TheCometHunter That could be, but I'm not so sure. I remember an interview he gave years ago (I think after the release of the quite forgettable film "The Hand") in which he stated "I never met a script I didn't like". He went on to say that he always gave his best, but the script wasn't his to judge. Basically, if he was offered a part in a film and he felt he could deliver it, he would accept. He made a number of duds, but he has nothing to be ashamed of.

There is an article in Wikipedia about Miss Quach. (1940=2013)
She moved to New York, took a position as an assistant to Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic. Quach was able to conduct the Philharmonic at a gala concert and on Bernstein's television series. ”...Miss Quach runs the danger of being a pretty young woman, and thus conquering all hearts for non-musical reasons. But ... she seems to be at her best in works of large dimension (odd for so diminutive a creature) and if there can be such a thing as a maestra, Miss Quach could well be it," Bernstein said.

Michael tells the story of how he got his name (Caine is not his real name). He was a young actor in a New York when his agent called announcing that Michael had just gotten a lead role in a new motion picture. The agent said “Only one problem, someone in SAG (Screen Actors Guild) already had your (real) name” and that Michael would have to think of one quickly.
Michael asked if he could call him back but his agent said “No, they’re writing up the contract now and waiting! THINK OF SOMETHING, ANYTHING!”
Michael stuck his head outside his window to the street below and saw a movie marquee advertising “The Caine Mutiny”. He had his name! He then said, with his wonderful cockney accent, “It’s a damn good thing they weren’t showing 101 Dalmatians!”

It seems peter sellers loved all mechanical and electrical gadgets. SO when answering machines became famous, he had one installed and put in this messg'' Peter sellers is not in at the moment....etc etc....'' not many people know that'' wHEN MICHAEL caine calld him , he heard that message....And one day he told someone about it and that famous line. Thats how Peter sellers made michael caine famous...Peter sellers also mimicked michael caine when telling a joke with caines accent and ended the joke with 'not many people know that!'' He got everyone thinking michael caine said it first. THATS the brilliance of peter sellers....

One of Michael Caine's films, "Alfie", also starred fellow WML Mystery Guest, Shelley Winters, and also included the likes of Millicent Martin, the former girlfriend of Paul McCartney in Jane Asher, and Eleanor Bron (who had previously starred with the Beatles in "Help!").

Eleanor Bron also co-starred with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook in the film "Bedazzled" in 1967 - a very witty modern re-telling of the Faust legend. And, speaking of upcoming WML? Mystery Guests, Raquel Welch has a small role in "Bedazzled," playing Lust.

This episode is the first following the election of Ronald Reagan as governor of California. Notwithstanding his large victory, Reagan was not generally viewed seriously as a political figure. When Governor Reagan debated Robert F Kennedy for instance, Kennedy clearly underestimated him (what a general election for 1968 that would have been). One East Coast establishment person who truly did understand Reagan's good chances to be elected President as early as November 1966 was Bennett Cerf. In this month, Cerf gave an interview about changing presidential vocabularies over the years. He made the point that with speechwriters, delivery, drama, and showmanship had become far more important for Presidents than their skill in developing rhetoric and vocabulary. When asked where this trend would end, Cerf replied, "It could even lead people like Ronald Reagan and George Murphy a lot closer to the White House than anyone at Actors Studio ever dreamed possible." www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/01463376609368790?journalCode=rcqu19

@@gardensofthegods It would be logistically impossible to stage a show of this nature nowadays. It wouldn't have the same vibe. People no longer engage in this level of oral exchange, which is part of the appeal of the show. And with the celebrities, no glamour.
