  • I met up with Steve at Guitar Nation 2010 and did this interview. He mostly talks about practice and how he approaches it.
After this I interviewed him live in from of an Audience for 90 minutes - it was really cool to meet one of my childhood guitar hero's and ask him all the things I've been wondering for the last 20 years! He was a real nice guy, down to earth and fun.
He's got a cool web site with guitar advice and lesson kinda stuff too:
    www.vai.com
Find the related course notes on the following link:
    justinguitar.co...
Thanks to the Jedi for coming in and filming :)) Cheers cobba!

Back in 1996 after seeing him play a show in Ft. Worth, TX he was just walking around the club and got to meet him and he was extremely humble and a nice guy.. he even put his hand over his face when I told him I thought he was at the forefront of modern rock guitar expression.. cool dude..

People think otherwise because he is a showman on stage, he likes to play good and look good at the same time. And there is nothing wrong about it. You just have a bunch of haters who take this on their advantage to hate even more. Vai is an amazing guy

Fantastic interview. Like many people here, perhaps, I feel I 'grew out' of Vai's music, but still, listening to the man explain his motivation and love for music, it rings true with everything I worshipped him for 'back in the day'. So generous and unpatronizing with his fans/admirers; Justin asks one question and Steve talks for over 7 minutes, yet make it feel like he's saying all this for the first time ever...

Firstly I'd like to say this was a very interesting and inspirational interview.
When he says "I never worked on my weaknesses. I only worked on my strengths, and then exaggerated them"
I think this is a great line and piece of advice but not to be taken too literally as some people seem to be. He's not saying "If you're not very good at eating food then don't eat food." You have to add in common sense. It's more about focusing your efforts; with guitar, and a lot of other things, there is so much to learn that you are much better off focusing on specific aspects rather than spreading yourself thin over all aspects. You'll just never get much better if you do that.
I just wanted to give my opinion on that matter but at the end of the day I'm just glad I came across this video.

This was the best interview I've ever watched. The questions were the things I was interested about, his words were speaking to me on a spiritual level, Steve really inspired me and he made me realize some things I was skeptical about. I'm gonna watch this a hundred times more. Thank you so much, Justin.

i have 5 previously broken fingers and a previously broken wrist (picking hand), but I love playing. I will never be as good as this man. but just holding the guitar and playing something as simple as an em chord is simple joy. I always play and try to be the best I can be. I don't care what others think because I do it for me. these injuries cause me hindrance but simple things can sound good. play for you not someone else. anyone can play. ive even seen people with no hands play. if you have a love for it. you will find a way.

You watch interviews with most actors and you get shitty 1 line replies with no personality at all. Look at how Vai interviews, complete opposite. Such an awesome interview, no doubt a reflection of not only a great guitarist but a great man as well.

Hearing steve talk about his relationship with the guitar and what he did in the early days sounds a lot like me 10 years ago. I can relate to what hes saying. I went through a lot of negative shit in my teens that music helped me escape from, plus it was the only thing i was ever good at, so it gave me a sense of self worth that probably saved my life. I hated school, and was constantly just bored with life. I didnt have much friends, and my parents were never really there for me. I felt pretty alone for years. Then i discovered the guitar and the more i learned and played the more i fell in love with it. It gave me hope, it gave me the feeling like i was more than just some worthless loser kid. I know ill probably never be as good as steve but i dont care i love music and i will keep playing till i die. Whenever i havent played my guitar for a while i feel empty and disconnected.

He may be a genius with guitar and music, but I think he has much more to teach about life: "I never worked on my weaknesses. I only worked on my strengths, and then exaggerated them". Or "Find the thing that excites you the most and go after that." Or "You perpetuate your own reality."
Steve has tapped into the divine artistic spirit. Anyone wishing to bring their own skill level to the level of virtuoso would do well to mind his words.
And, for what it's worth, I have no interest in playing the guitar.

    • @allolp
      @allolp 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

If you like something, do it more, kinda obv tho. Never work on your weaknesses seems misleading. When is it fine to leave a weakness alone, you know. If you only wana play solo and lead, leaving your rythm playing at suckage lvl is not really a good idea. Or if you love your job/education and your social skills are bad, then maybe you shouldnt just leave that and work on your strength.

This probably the most important music-related video I have watched. It just kinda opened to me. Develop the connection between your ears and your hands... hear something inside yourself, and then make it happen with your fingers. Also listening to a lot of different music makes your internal "vocabulary" larger. So you can hear things you never could before... thanks Steve Vai!

I am not a Vai fan at all and just stumbled on this right by accident. I've always loved Satch and yes Holdsworth and on and on, but Vai just told me everything I've ever thought about or wanted to. This is such a profound little message that some people just can't (or won't) get,. And it doesn't even have to be a guitar, it can be anything. Follow the passion of your life and just find those things that you do well and pursue them. Thank you Justin.

You are the most luckiest man on Earth to have met, talked with, and shook Steve Vai's hand. To me he is the Ultimate Guitar Master. When I learn how to play guitar he and his teacher Joe Satriani are who I aspire to be like. I want to be one of many who carry on thier musical and their legacy. I would love to learn every solo they ever played. And learn how to break them down and master all of their solos.

I think Steve has a unique, incredible sound that is hard to reproduce for many guitarist because he plays what he hears in his head and heart. It's a a great sound. He never became a Led Zeppelin, which i love or ELP, or Pink Floyd, they are all incredible also with their own sound. He is make's the Steve Vai sound. Much like Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart all had their own sounds and styles and forever remembered.

He is not my favorite guitarist, but I recognize that he really is pretty much on another plane as compared to others; even other monsters like Satch, Howe, etc. I realize, of course, that music is subjective, but I am simply referring to his almost otherworldly skill ...almost like an alien.

Love hearing a musician share his soul as Steve Vai has in this interview. He is an amazing artist and I shall continue to enjoy his sharing his gift with humanity. Thanks for posting this for the encouragement it gives to others to be persistent. :-)

Great interview. I've always had respect for Vai's talent but no love for most of his music. Let's face it the guy can shred and has tremendous passion. This interview gave me new appreciation for him. He's far more humble than he appears when he's playing and Justin did an excellent job letting him give answers.
