There's a vocal technique that I have not been able to do and cannot find how to do it because I'm not sure what it's even called, but in the song "Losing My Religion" by Shawn James, in the second verse he says "I think I thought I saw you try" and when he says "thought" and "saw" his voice does this thing with his voice that the best way I can describe it is that it sounds like his voice breaks a little bit but in a good way. I know that's a bad way of explaining it but if you know what I mean could you please refer me to something I could do to learn how to do it or could you post a video on it? Please and thank you!
totally agree. as soon as you THINK you're gonna eat your note... guess what's on the menu.... I find i hit my high notes when i focus my mind on having a strong physical performance over a perfect vocal performance. that was a MAJOR break through for me

I've never felt like crying when watching a youtube video before... I, a 'baritone', have always doubted myself and never ever have been able to reach high register notes.... you just hit the nail right in the head with this... thank you Ken.

I really do think being born with it is a huge part of it. I have been practicing singing high notes my entire life, and I can juuuuuust barely hit the notes in "My Heart Will Go On." And even then, it's only because I have a naturally high-pitched voice. Because I'm a tiny, tiny, child-sized man. There's a video on my channel if you're interested. If not, cool.
This is one of my favorite Ken Tamplin tutorials. I'm not a professional singer, just someone who enjoys karaoke. I don't usually sing high pitch songs, but this tutorial helps not just with technique, but gives me confidence too. One time I even realized singing in my natural voice, that I used to do only in falsetto.
I do face the problem of hitting the high notes perfectly. Whenever I try to sing a high note, my voice changes to falsetto automatically! Please help me.
I was classified as a baritone too, and after 10 years of singing lessons, I'm now singing in a 70's rock band, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Deep Purple, everything comes natural after I approached it with the right technique. Keep up the good work!
Loving your lessons and tips Ken! They are very in line with everything I was thaught, sometimes when I'm unable to see my teacher I mix your exercise with hers, my range is always expanding, what I thought of as two separated voices before (chest and falsetto) have now become one continuous stream of breath and notes. Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy that's a great advice, it did help me while jamming with my band but is it possible to sing high notes without going loud or falsetto? (Like when I sing in my room I can't go very loud) Thanks for replying :)

I had the breakthrough of my life today, that head voice feel you speak of, allowed me to dump the weight, and effortlessly sing higher! It was an incredible feeling to sing that high, and not be dragging my chest voice! A tip to all you beginners out there, don’t make the same mistake I did, do the exercises, warm ups themselves won’t be enough, if you’re struggling to sing higher! Sure, you’ll sing a bit higher, and you won’t be as tense, but you won’t be mixing properly and singing high as effortlessly with warm ups alone! Learn about your head voice, get down your mix! Once you unlock your mix, it’s going to feel weird at first, your whole approach to singing high will feel different, but, it will be easier, much much easier! Engage your diaphragm, focus on your vowels, just like the man says 😉 Also, just to add! I can belt high in chest voice, and now I’ve learnt to mix well Both are extremely reliable!
This "visualization" technique works for just about everything. We psych ourselves out of so many things. "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right."

This is so true, most youtube vocal coaches don't give enough attention to how much the high notes anticipation limits vocal range, they all talk about vocal tension without addressing the root of the tension. You are so awesome, never have I subscribed so fast in my life 🤘

This guy researched, analyzed and developed techniques on singing and his musical inclination exceeds most. Jesus, even his snaps at 2:53 are perfectly in time, he literally has a rhythmic beat while doing it. Top notch instructions and an overall wonderful person, you can just tell when someone is a pleasant person to be around, Ken fits that bill.
I totally agree with the “give yourself permission” point. A large part of expanding your range is a psychological battle. If you think a certain note is hard for you, then you’re gonna have a HARD time singing that note. But if you truly believe that you can hit that note without hurting yourself, then you’re eventually gonna figure it out and hit that note without trouble.
You are a very symphatic and relaxed guy. I's a plessure to listen to your advices. And even as a provessional singer a lot of them where helpfull, especially when it'sabout mental issues.So thank's from germany and keep on singing/teaching.
yeah, that's what my vocal coach told me as well and it has helped we started on Nothing Else Matters - Metallica When i got to the 2nd Verse where is goes high (never cared for what they do, never cared for what they know) i used to struggle to hit those high notes (but i could just get there in falsetto, but not in natural voice) after a while my falsetto strengthened (and i really felt my throat get beefier) i was also told by freinds that my voice (normal speaking voice sounded different LOL) but then i found i could hit the high notes in natural voice then that strenghtened up NOW .. THAT PART OF THE SONG DOESN'T EVEN SEEM HIGH ANYMORE i then used to do things like In A Darkened room - Skid row All My friends are Dead - Skid row Harvester of Sorrow - metallica Now That We're Dead - metallica at that time when i used to do in a darkened room at the end (Please let there be liiiight in a darkened roooooomm) i would really struggle I CAN NOW HIT THAT COMFORTABLY and with good control harverster of sorrow is not longer a big effort and the others are pretty cruzy as well so yeah, it's good advice, THAT REALLY FUCKING WORKED hehe Cool shit huh

It was a tough decision on this. At the time I had offers to audition with some huge, major name bands who were had lost their lead vocalists. To take their offers, I would have had to sign 5 year contracts and go on the road 10 months or more out of the year. My son and daughter were 10 and 12. I would have been gone for their teen years and come back around or after their graduations, and away from my wife. I chose my family. We lived in several countries, and I coached soccer for my son's teams, and took singing lessons from some of the greatest vocal teachers in each of those countries. I studied Bel Canto in Italy with some fantastic teachers. It was a difficult decision for a musician: I actually really needed the money. The market had fallen through on the television and motion picture soundtrack business I had been in for a few years. But I couldn't do that to my family. Arena Concerts or years with my family that would never be repeated. I don't regret my decision.
Great stuff. Very honorable. And you didn't fall into the trap of thinking you have to trade your own interests and desires in order to be there for you family. You can make both and you seem to have found the way to do that. You've obviously done very much with your talent and still honored your commitment and values as a family man. very inspiring. The note about starting out in falsetto is legitimately really good advice. I didn't do that when I started singing, and I wish I had. Actually I wish I had a better falsetto in general lol. But YES. Definitely great advice there.
The fach system is a system designed specifically to determine repertoires and roles for singers according to their voice type. Being a 'baritone' does not mean you're not allowed to sing notes above F#. Also, the fach system is used to categorize types of baritones, tenors etc. The fach system doesn't define you as 'baritone', it defines you as 'Lyric Baritone' or 'Heldentbariton' or 'Kavalierbariton' etc. Basically, the baritone that sings Don Giovanni, is probably not going to be the baritone who sings Nabucco or Rigoletto. The point is that fachs are extremely specific and extremely specific to opera. Being a dramatic tenor (for example) holds no significance outside the world of opera. Also, fachs like 'spieltenor' aren't even based on range or weight. It's based on acting ability. Also, most operatic baritones are expected to have a range from roughly the A below C below middle C to at least G above middle C, although most baritones will have up to the A above middle C (yes, even dramatic ones). Some baritones like Joseph Shore and Leonard Warren (from various accounts, though no confirmed recordings exist) have high Cs and Ds (Joseph Shore's high D can be found on his channel). Also, in the world of Italian Opera (which is definitely the widest repertoire of regularly performed opera) interpolated high notes, be it from baritones or tenors are mostly appreciated greatly. (Basses get the same appreciation for super low notes). However, the music written for baritones (in opera mind you) rarely goes above F# or G and rarely goes below C below middle C for the reason that that is where operatic baritone voices sound the most beautiful, expressive and homogenous. I mean, even the categories tenor, baritone etc. are basically meaningless outside of opera. Who cares if Steven Tyler is a tenor or an alto? He can hit the notes he needs to. He doesn't have to sing in a specific tessitura: he sings his own music and can write whatever the hell his heart fancies.
I couldn't go into head voice or falsetto when I first started to sing and my teacher told me I couldn't get into the choir. But I practised for hours every singe day and I reached it and after a month my teacher was praising me and said: how the hell did you do that? You sing higher than all the girls. This was when I was 12, now I'm 20 and I can still go to my highest notes and I even go higher, because I had determination. It really is a matter of setting your mind to it :)
I'm a baritone who is about E2-G4 in chest on average. Been watching Tanplin's videos lately and today I was doing some exercises in the car and got up to a B4 (no falsetto). Still trying to comprehend what just happened.
I'm not an expert, clearly Ken is and i'm not being a smart arse but..... i do agree with ken I'm also a Baritone like you i also do exercises in the car .. like you quick little story one day i was in the car driving , and i was singing a song (can't remember which one) i was relaxed focussing on traffic and singing and going around a roundabout AND ALL OF A SUDDEN..................... there's this movement in my throat it was like WHAAAAATTT T HE FUUUUUCCCKK WAS THAT it was fucking weird, like a fish or something moving around hehe Weirdest feeling i ever had in my life i almost had an accident because i didn't know what was happening hehe now what happened was BECAUSE I WAS RELAXED , VIBRATO CAME INTO EFFECT i used to try and create vibrato i didn't understand the concept that it's air passing folds of skin(or tissue if you want to be specific) and THE VOCAL CHORDS HAVE TO BE RELAXED FOR IT TO HAPPEN Funny shit, huh ? then..... just like you i used to love to sing (and still do ) 80s metal Metallica , Skid Row etc YOU DON'T GET HIGHER UNTIL YOU LEARN TO RELAX i always make a habit of doing my exercises in the car before any singing (it's now at a point where my exercises are viewed upon as the first 4 songs that i sing every day ) and i consider them boring and therefore i relax through them like ken said you relaxed, AND IT HAPPENED and you've probably been doing it a while therefore YOUR VOICE STRENGHTENED YOU INCREASED YOUR RANGE i had that happen as well i could hit the high notes on Nothing else matter - metallica in the beginning of my training then , give it a week or 2 and i could Now... a year later, IT'S NOT EVEN AN EFFORT (well.. it's a small effort) but high notes are not about pushing harder, High notes are about LEARNING TO GET YOUR THROAT MUSCLES IN A POSITION THEN JUST SITTING IN THAT POSITION AND USING YOUR DIAPHRAM TO PUSH AIR PAST THE VOCAL CHORDS IF YOU LOOK AT SINGING LIKE - I'm just positioning my throat - then i'm just passing air past the chords instead of - I'm going to push harder to get higher - You'll learn to relax - You'll learn to understand that you either CAN put your throat in a position ...........OR YOU CAN'T if you can't, you just practice doing it in the beginning , you can get to a range where SOME NOTES work and others sound like shit or even break up What this means is Your vocal chords cannot vibrate at that frequency just yet so.. just ease into it slowly, take your time , let your throat go through stages of practice, then strength build up , then rest then repeat all that over again, eat the right foods, drink water, take care of your throat, listen to your throat when it doesn't want to sing anymore and give it a break and in a little bit you'll find that you'll be hitting notes higher and higher THAT'S WHAT I DID
I just found your channel and find it very helpful. I've been a musician for 30 wonderful years. In the last 20 I've stepped away from vocal performance and remained an instrumental guitar. When i was in elementary i was a baritone..thenthere was one time i heard a friend of mine singing slowly and not too loud faking her voice but was able to hit high notes and i was surprised . that was the exact time i discovered the falsetto..i keep using falsetto since then over and over again. Then due to overusage of my falsetto i notice imy diction became clearer as time goes by coz my falsetto has a mix of chest voice eventually.then hitting the high notes i discovered my headvoice. ....now i was able to do balance mixed voice.and i already forget the baritone..now i realized i find it difficult to sing a very low notes because i have different voice range now..even im a male i always hit female key .and im happy for the outcome...your video tutorial reminds me of how my voice was before..haha.....thumbs up...

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy:-) Hi Ken question here. Need help for singing softly at the higher end of chest voice. Ive got a decent mid- low range and a good head voice. I also can sing in another register which sounds like you are letting the air out of a balloon. Is this a whistle tone? Anyways. I can bark low and belt high. My weak spot is when I am stuck singing the notes around the same F# for example in and around Kansas Dust in the Wind. I choke on "close my eyes" been trying that for years and I choke on my vowels. Any advice on how to practice this and lose some of the tension without sounding like a dying animal. Thanks in advance

Omg I’m so amazed with how much information you have. I used to be able to hit high notes but feel like I damaged my voice because I was never taught how to warm up my voice or even how to control it. I’m really sad that I didn’t have the proper guidance but hope to see more videos in the future on damaged vocal cords. Being British, when I hear the term 'soccer' I find myself automatically going 'grrrr, it's football!' Having said that, even though the rest of the world says 'football' that term means a very different sport to you guys in The States. Ken, having you ever watch any rugby?
Oh wow, did you ever hit the nail on the head! Relaxing is key. I used to go to karaoke a lot for about 5 years (until I moved to a burg that HAS no karaoke anywhere!) and I would occasionally sing "Faithfully" by Journey. I did a good job with it until the very end - those last couple of 'faithfullys' were always *just* beyond my reach.... until I decided to accept that I wasn't going to be able to do it. Since I figured I was going to blow it anyway, I stopped worrying about it. This had the opposite effect - and made me relax my throat, chest and diaphragm, and just have a good time singing the song. Once I got loose and stopped worrying about it, I hit it!! I hit the notes! It was glorious!
Soon i will attend what they call an Audition from SM ent and JYP ent , both of them are Korea greatest and biggest music industry where each year new trainees will fight for their debut stage and become a world wide star , your video is giving me a lot of hope and i become more confident on singing because of you , Thank you Ken .. This channel has been so helpful for me. I did a Broadway adaptation of Hair Spray and I had Motor Mouth Maybelle as my character and this was so helpful to hit every note and do it perfectly!
I hold my hand out in front of my body when singing a high note (for me--a contralto) and I lower hand slowly as the note gets higher. It helps me to sustain without going flabby and falsetto. It's a mental trick I use. Or I slightly lower my chin.

A bit of an understatement there in the start "ive been known to hit a high note or two" - made me giggle. I cant hit high notes myself since puberty, but let me tell you a funny story since you seem to like stories too! When i was around 12 me and my best friend joined a choir Just so we could be with a girl we had a crush on. We were the only Boys in the choir and took it seriously to impress the Girls. We ended up becoming quite good and the teacher wanted us to sing one verse each of this song about david and goliath(Christian Norwegian song..). We learned it and as time passed we had a gig at a school gathering and we got noticed by a priest that wanted us to sing in his New church. Teacher was proud and accepted the gig.. Turns out it was the opening of the New church in Åsane - the one built after "Greven" (count grishnak(?) from the Black metal scene in Bergen, Norway) burned the old one. So we ended up signing solo, nervous as f..., on National TV in Norway and let me tell you we were the most popular Boys in school after that! I got to kiss the girl a lot :) my first crush.. Thanks for entertaining videos with a lot of fun stories and facts Ken! I joined ur website and if i ever focus on singing(i love playing guitars..) i know where to go for online teaching..

I'm not gonna lie Nik Hoecker! The only person I can find lower than me is the temptation guy of Silent Night! I practiced the low notes so much I can't hit any high notes!!! I sing loud from G# 2 to G# 3.

So, I know that basically the register you sing in controls the muscle tension fo the vocal folds and in turn the overtone richness. For high frequencies, we can't really sustain tense vocal folds and this is why we tend to switch to a more relaxed falsetto. Where does the mixed voice come in? is it simply some intermediate tension of muscles ?

That's how I was when I was a teenager. I never took lessons or anything but I don't really think about the notes I'm hitting. I'm aware I have a bunch of different voices and they overlap. Some notes can be sung in about 3 different ones. I recently discovered I can sing really high, but with a loud, sharp, clear tone not like falsetto and actually can go as high as falsetto if not higher. Is this 'head voice'? High is easy. Try hitting a note lower than you normally can go, that's a whole different thing. I believe there are about 4 registers. Fry, chest, head, and falsetto. I don't know much though, I need to watch more of these videos.
@@kalebjernigan head voice can and should be supported. Falsetto is disconnected like the fry. Example, you can't control the volume of your falsetto, but can do so with head voice

I really do think being born with it is a huge part of it. I have been practicing singing high notes my entire life, and I can juuuuuust barely hit the notes in "My Heart Will Go On." And even then, it's only because I have a naturally high-pitched voice. Because I'm a tiny, tiny, child-sized man. There's a video on my channel if you're interested. If not, cool.
This is one of my favorite Ken Tamplin tutorials. I'm not a professional singer, just someone who enjoys karaoke. I don't usually sing high pitch songs, but this tutorial helps not just with technique, but gives me confidence too. One time I even realized singing in my natural voice, that I used to do only in falsetto.
I do face the problem of hitting the high notes perfectly. Whenever I try to sing a high note, my voice changes to falsetto automatically! Please help me.

I had the breakthrough of my life today, that head voice feel you speak of, allowed me to dump the weight, and effortlessly sing higher!
It was an incredible feeling to sing that high, and not be dragging my chest voice!
A tip to all you beginners out there, don’t make the same mistake I did, do the exercises, warm ups themselves won’t be enough, if you’re struggling to sing higher!
Sure, you’ll sing a bit higher, and you won’t be as tense, but you won’t be mixing properly and singing high as effortlessly with warm ups alone!
Learn about your head voice, get down your mix!
Once you unlock your mix, it’s going to feel weird at first, your whole approach to singing high will feel different, but, it will be easier, much much easier!
Engage your diaphragm, focus on your vowels, just like the man says 😉

I totally agree with the “give yourself permission” point. A large part of expanding your range is a psychological battle. If you think a certain note is hard for you, then you’re gonna have a HARD time singing that note. But if you truly believe that you can hit that note without hurting yourself, then you’re eventually gonna figure it out and hit that note without trouble.

When i got to the 2nd Verse where is goes high (never cared for what they do, never cared for what they know) i used to struggle to hit those high notes (but i could just get there in falsetto, but not in natural voice)
after a while my falsetto strengthened (and i really felt my throat get beefier) i was also told by freinds that my voice (normal speaking voice sounded different LOL)
but then i found i could hit the high notes in natural voice
then that strenghtened up
NOW .. THAT PART OF THE SONG DOESN'T EVEN SEEM HIGH ANYMORE
i then used to do things like

No need to push further than your voice is ready for. Just get to the note, and develop it gradually, over time.

Congrats to your son! Great to hear that you were so involved with his interests.
It was a tough decision on this. At the time I had offers to audition with some huge, major name bands who were had lost their lead vocalists. To take their offers, I would have had to sign 5 year contracts and go on the road 10 months or more out of the year. My son and daughter were 10 and 12. I would have been gone for their teen years and come back around or after their graduations, and away from my wife. I chose my family. We lived in several countries, and I coached soccer for my son's teams, and took singing lessons from some of the greatest vocal teachers in each of those countries. I studied Bel Canto in Italy with some fantastic teachers. It was a difficult decision for a musician: I actually really needed the money. The market had fallen through on the television and motion picture soundtrack business I had been in for a few years. But I couldn't do that to my family. Arena Concerts or years with my family that would never be repeated. I don't regret my decision.
Great stuff. Very honorable. And you didn't fall into the trap of thinking you have to trade your own interests and desires in order to be there for you family. You can make both and you seem to have found the way to do that. You've obviously done very much with your talent and still honored your commitment and values as a family man.

The note about starting out in falsetto is legitimately really good advice. I didn't do that when I started singing, and I wish I had. Actually I wish I had a better falsetto in general lol. But YES. Definitely great advice there.

The fach system is a system designed specifically to determine repertoires and roles for singers according to their voice type. Being a 'baritone' does not mean you're not allowed to sing notes above F#. Also, the fach system is used to categorize types of baritones, tenors etc. The fach system doesn't define you as 'baritone', it defines you as 'Lyric Baritone' or 'Heldentbariton' or 'Kavalierbariton' etc. Basically, the baritone that sings Don Giovanni, is probably not going to be the baritone who sings Nabucco or Rigoletto. The point is that fachs are extremely specific and extremely specific to opera. Being a dramatic tenor (for example) holds no significance outside the world of opera. Also, fachs like 'spieltenor' aren't even based on range or weight. It's based on acting ability. Also, most operatic baritones are expected to have a range from roughly the A below C below middle C to at least G above middle C, although most baritones will have up to the A above middle C (yes, even dramatic ones). Some baritones like Joseph Shore and Leonard Warren (from various accounts, though no confirmed recordings exist) have high Cs and Ds (Joseph Shore's high D can be found on his channel). Also, in the world of Italian Opera (which is definitely the widest repertoire of regularly performed opera) interpolated high notes, be it from baritones or tenors are mostly appreciated greatly. (Basses get the same appreciation for super low notes).
However, the music written for baritones (in opera mind you) rarely goes above F# or G and rarely goes below C below middle C for the reason that that is where operatic baritone voices sound the most beautiful, expressive and homogenous. I mean, even the categories tenor, baritone etc. are basically meaningless outside of opera. Who cares if Steven Tyler is a tenor or an alto? He can hit the notes he needs to. He doesn't have to sing in a specific tessitura: he sings his own music and can write whatever the hell his heart fancies.

I couldn't go into head voice or falsetto when I first started to sing and my teacher told me I couldn't get into the choir. But I practised for hours every singe day and I reached it and after a month my teacher was praising me and said: how the hell did you do that? You sing higher than all the girls. This was when I was 12, now I'm 20 and I can still go to my highest notes and I even go higher, because I had determination. It really is a matter of setting your mind to it :)

I'm a baritone who is about E2-G4 in chest on average. Been watching Tanplin's videos lately and today I was doing some exercises in the car and got up to a B4 (no falsetto). Still trying to comprehend what just happened.

Now... a year later, IT'S NOT EVEN AN EFFORT (well.. it's a small effort) but high notes are not about pushing harder, High notes are about LEARNING TO GET YOUR THROAT MUSCLES IN A POSITION THEN JUST SITTING IN THAT POSITION AND USING YOUR DIAPHRAM TO PUSH AIR PAST THE VOCAL CHORDS
IF YOU LOOK AT SINGING LIKE
- I'm just positioning my throat
- then i'm just passing air past the chords
instead of
- I'm going to push harder to get higher
- You'll learn to relax
- You'll learn to understand that you either CAN put your throat in a position
...........OR YOU CAN'T
if you can't, you just practice doing it
in the beginning , you can get to a range where SOME NOTES work and others sound like shit or even break up
What this means is
Your vocal chords cannot vibrate at that frequency just yet
so.. just ease into it slowly, take your time , let your throat go through stages of practice, then strength build up , then rest then repeat all that over again, eat the right foods, drink water, take care of your throat, listen to your throat when it doesn't want to sing anymore and give it a break
and in a little bit you'll find that you'll be hitting notes higher and higher
THAT'S WHAT I DID
My average notes are E2-G4 too. Now you motivated me to try his exercises

When i was in elementary i was a baritone..thenthere was one time i heard a friend of mine singing slowly and not too loud faking her voice but was able to hit high notes and i was surprised . that was the exact time i discovered the falsetto..i keep using falsetto since then over and over again. Then due to overusage of my falsetto i notice imy diction became clearer as time goes by coz my falsetto has a mix of chest voice eventually.then hitting the high notes i discovered my headvoice. ....now i was able to do balance mixed voice.and i already forget the baritone..now i realized i find it difficult to sing a very low notes because i have different voice range now..even im a male i always hit female key .and im happy for the outcome...your video tutorial reminds me of how my voice was before..haha.....thumbs up...

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy:-) Hi Ken question here. Need help for singing softly at the higher end of chest voice. Ive got a decent mid- low range and a good head voice. I also can sing in another register which sounds like you are letting the air out of a balloon. Is this a whistle tone? Anyways. I can bark low and belt high. My weak spot is when I am stuck singing the notes around the same F# for example in and around Kansas Dust in the Wind. I choke on "close my eyes" been trying that for years and I choke on my vowels. Any advice on how to practice this and lose some of the tension without sounding like a dying animal. Thanks in advance

I used to be able to hit high notes but feel like I damaged my voice because I was never taught how to warm up my voice or even how to control it. I’m really sad that I didn’t have the proper guidance but hope to see more videos in the future on damaged vocal cords. Being British, when I hear the term 'soccer' I find myself automatically going 'grrrr, it's football!' Having said that, even though the rest of the world says 'football' that term means a very different sport to you guys in The States. Ken, having you ever watch any rugby?
Oh wow, did you ever hit the nail on the head! Relaxing is key. I used to go to karaoke a lot for about 5 years (until I moved to a burg that HAS no karaoke anywhere!) and I would occasionally sing "Faithfully" by Journey. I did a good job with it until the very end - those last couple of 'faithfullys' were always *just* beyond my reach.... until I decided to accept that I wasn't going to be able to do it. Since I figured I was going to blow it anyway, I stopped worrying about it. This had the opposite effect - and made me relax my throat, chest and diaphragm, and just have a good time singing the song. Once I got loose and stopped worrying about it, I hit it!! I hit the notes! It was glorious!

I hold my hand out in front of my body when singing a high note (for me--a contralto) and I lower hand slowly as the note gets higher. It helps me to sustain without going flabby and falsetto. It's a mental trick I use. Or I slightly lower my chin.

A bit of an understatement there in the start "ive been known to hit a high note or two" - made me giggle. I cant hit high notes myself since puberty, but let me tell you a funny story since you seem to like stories too! When i was around 12 me and my best friend joined a choir Just so we could be with a girl we had a crush on. We were the only Boys in the choir and took it seriously to impress the Girls. We ended up becoming quite good and the teacher wanted us to sing one verse each of this song about david and goliath(Christian Norwegian song..). We learned it and as time passed we had a gig at a school gathering and we got noticed by a priest that wanted us to sing in his New church. Teacher was proud and accepted the gig.. Turns out it was the opening of the New church in Åsane - the one built after "Greven" (count grishnak(?) from the Black metal scene in Bergen, Norway) burned the old one. So we ended up signing solo, nervous as f..., on National TV in Norway and let me tell you we were the most popular Boys in school after that! I got to kiss the girl a lot :) my first crush.. Thanks for entertaining videos with a lot of fun stories and facts Ken! I joined ur website and if i ever focus on singing(i love playing guitars..) i know where to go for online teaching..

I'm not gonna lie Nik Hoecker! The only person I can find lower than me is the temptation guy of Silent Night! I practiced the low notes so much I can't hit any high notes!!! I sing loud from G# 2 to G# 3.

So, I know that basically the register you sing in controls the muscle tension fo the vocal folds and in turn the overtone richness. For high frequencies, we can't really sustain tense vocal folds and this is why we tend to switch to a more relaxed falsetto. Where does the mixed voice come in? is it simply some intermediate tension of muscles ?

Lol F#4 is a fairly low note XD that's the last note I can hit on a good day before my voice sounds like a dying cat.
Yes, it is a fairly low note when you train up to C5 and above.
That's how I was when I was a teenager. I never took lessons or anything but I don't really think about the notes I'm hitting. I'm aware I have a bunch of different voices and they overlap. Some notes can be sung in about 3 different ones. I recently discovered I can sing really high, but with a loud, sharp, clear tone not like falsetto and actually can go as high as falsetto if not higher. Is this 'head voice'? High is easy. Try hitting a note lower than you normally can go, that's a whole different thing.
I believe there are about 4 registers. Fry, chest, head, and falsetto. I don't know much though, I need to watch more of these videos.
J-woke John Key I’ve heard falsetto is more of just a reinforced head voice. I think they’re pretty much the same thing
@@kalebjernigan head voice can and should be supported. Falsetto is disconnected like the fry. Example, you can't control the volume of your falsetto, but can do so with head voice
