    Never replace that old derailleur with new cheap plastic garbage. That old one is far more reliable, you just need to bend back the cage and and rebuild the springs. Or you can buy any other 5 speed derailleur with a similar cage size. That new one will fully wear out in like 6 months, while the old one is all steel and will last you 40-50 years and more with maintenance.

    that extra bolt is for the derailleur to claw then the claw goes in the axle slot then the axle nut goes on outside the claw...or bypass the claw if the frame has a derailleur hanger welded on.

    Never, and ever, Attach a rear derailleur on the axle. It will cause shifting problems.

    • @markbowden1976
      @markbowden1976 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apart from the original suntour 5 or 7 did go straight on the axle, albeit with a flat sides washer to keep it from moving but still straight on the axle... My guy was just going reverse steps from his original mech removal.
      (No it wouldn't work for long 🤣)

  • @gilbertlennoxgilbert2772

    It went together easily in less than an hour. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

    Changing or cleaning the gloves would have been nice.

  • @DennisBareis
    @DennisBareis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Surely that wheel is in the wrong position, it needs to go all the way back in the "slot" for it to be safe. Also, you are missing a bit which was removed with the previous derailleur? I will watch someone else's video for a second opinion... Obviously there is also more to it like which gear to put the bike in etc.

    • @TonyHob
      @TonyHob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a similar derailleur and came here to see how it was mounted because mine is the same way and I thought it has to be wrong. The derailleur takes up part of the slot so that the wheel does not slide back all the way on the other side. Apparently that how the original mounts. Odd. However., I agree that the new one should slide all the way back. He needed to loosen and re-adjust the wheel on the other side of the axle.

    • @DoItYourselfEasy
      @DoItYourselfEasy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read the comments in the description. As illustrated in the repair as well, the original derailleur is no longer in production and obsolete. The replacement is a totally different type, brand and material. The way it was installed was the only way to get to fit on this bike and it works well.

    • @TonyHob
      @TonyHob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DoItYourselfEasy the problem is that every time you remove the wheel (to change the tube for example) you will need to remove the derailleur. This should never be the case on a bicycle. The derailleur will work but it is not the correct way to install it. The new derailleur you used is designed to be used with a frame that has a hanger, not to be installed onto the axle. You needed a derailleur like this with an open ended axle mount: www.amazon.com/Shimano-Tourney-TY300-Derailleur-Standard/dp/B01K5C6F1U/ref=sr_1_8?crid=1WFW1G13AJIAM&keywords=5%2Bspeed%2Bderailleur&qid=1562171942&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011&rnid=2470954011&rps=1&s=gateway&sprefix=5%2Bspeed%2Bder%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-8&th=1&psc=1

    • @Frankreddy62
      @Frankreddy62 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is definitely a part missing. You left the part that hangs the derailleur on the old one. Its called a hanger or Drop Hook. Look at the video at the 2:04 mark. See the large hex head bolt about an inch to the right of your screwdriver that looks like a hook ? That part was suposed to be removed from the old derailleur and installed to the new one. The second small bolt on the hook is what keeps the derailleur aligned properly on the bike.
