Every now and then, and you may have to wait 10 or 15 years for it, you come across a performance that defines the word PERFECTION. There is nothing else can add that hasn't been posted below, apart from my personal admiration for this young man and his awesome rendition of this beautiful song that I have loved since the early 70s.
I was in a youth choir years ago and we performed Godspell, but unfortunately "Beautiful City" wasn't included (it was in the movie version, not the original Broadway version). This is by far the most beautiful version of the song I've every heard. Hunter's voice is awesome!
Christian, Jewish, athiest, Buddhist, whatever religion u side with or don’t, this musical is beautiful and teaches lessons that every human being should do their best to follow. Yea, it teaches morals and and ethics, but most importantly it teaches love and community and union. Wish our world today could take a few pointers
I love the original, upbeat version of "Beautiful City" written for the '73 film version, but I also like this newer take on this lovely song. Both evoke different emotions, and look at the same lyrics from different perspectives; this shows what a layered, textured, rich and beautiful song this is. Stephen Schwartz, as always, is to be commended for his artistic genius, and this talented performer gives a very moving interpretation. It's not surprising he was cast as Jesus in the 2011 company. Well-done to both men!
I am overwhelmed by so much beauty of body, spirit and voice in Hunter Parrish. Just listened to SFGMC's GALA 2012 performance of this song with Defying Gravity. God bless Stephen Schwartz!
I am a true bari and I have listened to his version many times, as this song is in my exact range and it's in my book as a singer. After much deliberation I decided he has more of a tenor-like way of singing some parts of this. I'm really intrigued by how he flips between the two singing approaches in a seamless way. It's one of my growth areas, to make those types of style transitions. Baris can sound really great on certain material, but our bari resonance can quickly become not ideal depending on the song.
Out of the ruins and rubble Out of the smoke Out of our night of struggle Can we see a ray of hope? One pale thin ray reaching for the day We can build a beautiful city Yes, we can, yes, we can) We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But we can build a city of men We may not reach the ending But we can start Slowly but truly mending Brick by brick Heart by heart Now, maybe now We start learning how We can build a beautiful city Yes we can, yes, we can We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But we can build a city of men When your trust is all but shattered When your faith is all but killed You can give up bitter and battered Or you can slowly start to build! A beautiful city Yes, we can, yes, we can We can build a beautiful city Not a city of angels But finally a city of men A city of men
I hope they are all repented, forgiven, obedient, committed, saved, practicing Christians and that I will see them in heaven, as we sing together forever.
we sang this in my chamber choir and I dont remember some of these lyrics.where is the part about chrome and alabaster and a special plaster?been a long time but I distinctly remember singing those words.
As a deaf person, I love hearing this song 🎵 when I was a child but sadly 😢, to be honest, the captions isn’t perfect. Would it be possible if you can make a self made captions for this song 🎶? Your hard work efforts would be greatly appreciated.
he is one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen and heard
When I go to heaven, I want to sing like this man....😇
Who the hell dislike this perfect video?!!!! He's so divine. Smile. Eyes. Hair. Voice. Body. Face. Everything!
I saw him in Godspell and he hugged me after the show. BEST. DAY. EVER.

I die every time he looks at the camera.
He has great talent! Towards the end, you can practically see the pride in himself dripping off of his face! It's good pride - well-deserved pride!
hunter is so talented and full of emotion he is amazing
Extreme talent, and his voice is UNBELIEVABLE

My favorite Godspell song. Amazing rendition.

Nice
He had some good moments in there.
His vocal sweet spot is that chesty Bari place.
I believe him when I watch him, but not when I close me eyes.

Out of the ruins and rubble
Out of the smoke
Out of our night of struggle
Can we see a ray of hope?
One pale thin ray reaching for the day
We can build a beautiful city
Yes, we can, yes, we can)
We can build a beautiful city
Not a city of angels
But we can build a city of men
We may not reach the ending
But we can start
Slowly but truly mending
Brick by brick
Heart by heart
Now, maybe now
We start learning how
We can build a beautiful city
Yes we can, yes, we can
We can build a beautiful city
Not a city of angels
But we can build a city of men
When your trust is all but shattered
When your faith is all but killed
You can give up bitter and battered
Or you can slowly start to build!
A beautiful city
Yes, we can, yes, we can
We can build a beautiful city
Not a city of angels
But finally a city of men
A city of men

Where was Anna Maria during this gig? No Day By Day?
Prefer the original personally but this is very good.
That's gotta be a studio soundtrack they're singing karaoke too. The instrumentalists sound too good.

As beautiful as this version is, I still prefer the movie version. We need some more optimism in this world.
