My parents had the same issue while married because my mom's significantly younger then my dad
As in they met when she was 19 and he was approaching 30 age gap
His family use to give her crap about about *ugh* "honey trapping" him? Meanwhile my dad's getting high fives for landing such a gorgeous young woman
The only fight I remember happening around us was during a BBQ and his mom said something along the lines of
"Just admit it! You wanted his money!"
Cue the entire family including her husband looking at her in complete bewilderment while my mom shot back

Because they were not well off like at all as a whole and my dad had worked at an auto shop that entire time
I was 29 and my wife was just shy of 39 when we married. That was 42 years ago and we are still together.

It's really a classic case of a mother refusing to let her child leave the nest and resenting anyone who gets between her and her child. All Beth did was alienate her son because she cant stand to see others happy if shes not happy 🥺
The one buying the burgers should have seen that 6 people and being told to only buy 5 was odd. She should have just bought 6.
My mother in law hated me when she found out my parents were the same age as her oldest son and she was the same age as my grandmother. It was horrible.

Part of the year my wife is three years older than me, and she's four years older. After nearly 27 years, there has NEVER been any issues. My mother loved my wife like her own daughter until the day she died.

In the end everything turned out fine. But you thinking of allowing the monster back into your live again, is like putting your hand in boiling hot water assuming it won't burn you. The only reason why people like Beth pretend to change is because they are left with nobody, no money, no support, and constant harassment from friends, relatives, family, and acquaintances. My husband and I did not get married until we were 36 years old. We have now been married for 22 years and this year I will turn 59 - getting close to 60. That sounds so old!! But thanks to my fertility problems and a whacked out thyroid, I was only able to carry one child to full term. Our son is now 21 years old and doing great!! My MIL was wonderful!! She never called us old even though her son, the one I married, was the oldest of 4 children and the LAST one to get married!!

I knew the burger incident would happen. Every time a MIL says they are not hungry and asks the DIL to pay for the food, the DIL always gets taken advantage of and is left without food.

Both of my daughters-in-law are older than my sons. One 3 yrs older and the other 5 yrs older. I never thought much of it and it’s never, ever been an issue. They’re both wonderful people. Good friends, great wives and super mothers. Seriously, age means nothing when couples fit.

I'm 17 years older than my husband. We just hit it off and have a lot in common and have been together for 14 years. Neither of us think about age, we think about compatibility and how much we love each other. His parents didn't blink twice about my age. It didn't matter to them either. My son married an older woman and they had 13 wonderful years together. Sadly she passed away. The important thing here is that the people involved truly love each other. She (my daughter in law) was loved dearly and is very missed.

Pretty sure the niceness gene skipped his parents, chances are his grandparents taught him to choose his kind side. The MIL while not happy is forced to see OP was right along with the possibility of losing friends. Maybe one day when she wishes her son would return again she gets a message from OP. It tells the MIL she's a grandma now & OP is contemplating slowly allowing the MIL back into their lives if she can behave.

5 years isn’t much of an age gap. There are bigger age gaps in my family. Older men, but still. My boyfriend is 10 years older than me, he is the love of my life. I have one cousin who is 14 years younger than her husband. And that still isn’t the largest age gap in our family.
My grandmother's neighbors had quite an age gap. He was 26 and she was 46 when they got married. They were happily married for 30 years til he passed at 61. He treated her like a queen.
