@@velcranoxofficials9970 Your entire argument is predicated on the assumption that Britain would have to invade. For one, the technological difference would play a massive role. Iran has proven vulnerable to drone strikes, for example, and the UK absolutely has drone capacity.
And yes, 2 aircraft carriers is a big deal considering most countries have 0. Also of note, the existence of the 2 carriers would ensure the British did not overextend, they have two floating airbases they can advance on the enemy. The logistical value of an aircraft carrier when discussing an invasion of distant shores is absolute. Realistically, the British solo option would not involve a direct invasion, but rather a series of long range drone and guided missile strikes directed towards key military and governmental infrastructure, designed to force the Iranians into submission before conventional conflict can begin.

Those tiny gunboats tried to block the path of a tanker 100 times their size and filled with product ? Tanker collides with gunboats = Gunboats at the bottom of the sea. That's like three guys on motorcycles trying to block the path of a 25 car freight train. lol
I mean you can stop a larger oil tanker with a much smaller boat. All you need is one well placed explosive shot and you can send the entire tanker to the bottom of the ocean. They aren't built with armor so a simple HE round would damage the hull irreparably, and it's crewed by civilians meaning they are unlikely able to fight back in any meaningful way.
@@tomabenas964 : Sure Thomas. If someone's intent is to sink it with a missile or explosive of some kind, then obviously it can be sunk. Wasn't saying a tanker can't be sunk. The point was just that the mass of three tiny gunboats, is no match for the mass of a tanker loaded with product, if the tanker decides to break through the gunboats. They wouldn't be blocking the tankers path so much as they'd be committing suicide in order to cause any damage to the tanker. Also, while tankers don't have armor, it is my understanding that law requires them to be double-hulled in order to help prevent oil spills. I do not know the specs on the hull thickness, but I would assume it is relatively thick, in order to support the stress of their heavy payloads for weeks at a time.

But factor in the machine guns, small cannons, and usually some form of small missile weaponry and you realize that even just one gunboat is all you really need to stop a tanker. Two or three shots and you can destroy a tanker that doesn't listen to you. Now if you thought they were just going to park in the way and let the tanker ram through them that is so 17th century.

Iran is geographically in one of the most volatile places in the world and have maintained their borders and security for a long time. Where do you draw this assessment from? Keep playing in the pool.
The Iranian navy is there for diplomatic pressure, not military power. That's why they detain British citizens (usually female), and ships, for political leverage.

I think the same would've happened if the Spanish owned Gibraltar. Spain and Italy are very committed to the meditaranian security.
Grace 1 going the long way round may be due to secrecy, But Grace 1 can't actually transit the Suez canal even if she wanted too, she doesn't fit. Ships with a beam larger then 50m and a draught larger then 20m cant go through the Suez Canal and Grace 1 exceeds those dimension.
Thats really interesting info, cheers. On further reading it seems that Suez does have capability for ships to offload crude at one end if they're overweight and they'll pump it to the other end and the tanker refuels on its way out. But apparently the authorities refuse to handle Iranian oil so in this case Grace 1 still had to go round

Iran was mysteriously silent when the USA had its military in Iraq, kicking Saddam back to the stone age. Not one statement of disapproval came from Iran. And just in case people believe Iran has a navy, the Port of Miami Florida has more speed boats than Iran and are way faster. Plastic, rubber hulls will sink so much faster than an Aircraft Carrier. Iran can't defend itself from the common house fly. Not to mention that a country that enforces its own women to cover from head to toe isn't a country worth worrying about. I kind of admired the Iranian military for having the balls to try and kidnap a British tanker given they have no chance if war were to break out between two countries. Iran economy would cripple if Britain shut down oil trade as Iran does not have a blue navy to even challenge Britain. Fighting a war where you don't have the capability to strike your enemy home base is a losing war to begin with.

Absolutely, but you are correct that resources are the major factor. This video was possible because of the publicly available ship transponders showing the location of everything. In an all military event these would all be switched off

It's near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the busiest naval routes in the world, one side of which is a nation that the US doesn't like and makes aggressive overtures into the waters now and then, and a ship presumably just sent out a distress call.
I don't really see anything unreasonable about a drone checking it out.

If you don't turn off your AIS transponder then everyone including the Iranians can accurately track your position and intended track. It may be suspicious but at least you have some concealment.
