      Melting pennies has to be as stupid as it gets. Getting the copper to a melting point will cost you everything you have spent for the penny and the profit as well. these coins will be here for all time. When the US mint smelts all they have to make new coins, then the ones saved will skyrocket in value. The big question is when this will happen. It will be in less than 10 years for sure.

      Yeah they are! A lot of people I know that CRH use a dolly to bring boxes to and from the bank. I couldn't comfortably carry more than 3 half boxes at a time. 4 was always a challenge.

      The value of the metal can swing in both directions. And a lot of people also couldn't see values dropping back in the late 2000's either. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years.

      It's pretty much a tripod over a table. And positioning your lights to get the desired brightness without too much reflections. Then I just speak into a phone mic to reduce background noise or distortion. No fancy ring lights or umbrellas used for these videos. Hope that helps.

    Hey there! I ordered two boxes from my bank? But all of the end pieces are shiny and brand new. How do I get recirculated pennies, nickels, etc.? Every time I ask, they give me a blow off answer. Any tips to get recirculated coins?

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The answer is to just keep ordering and possibly go to a couple different branches in your area. I say keep ordering, because eventually the shipments will stop being brand new coins. The bank doesn't have the ability to choose recirculated versus newly minted so don't specifically ask them to do a 'special order'. Another option is that you may be able to ask to buy the customer wrapped coins from your bank.
      What denomination were you ordering that keeps coming back brand new? Some of those brand new boxes of coins turn out to be really valuable. 2009 for pennies, nickels, and dimes. This is because of low mintages & errors.

    I specifically tell the banks i only want to open an account if I can have coins counted and/or have coins ordered. I've recently opened 4 accounts, and after 2 weeks have had one tell me no more counting or ordering, and one tell me I can count but no more ordering. Another told me I can dump anything buy halves. It's getting harder, even when you're 100% upfront because its the people behind the scenes making the decisions.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have found the best results coming from being honest and starting with small orders/returns. See how it goes and slowly over time increase if the bank will allow. Starting off with massive weekly requests/coin dumps typically quickly results in an account closure.

    What if I get a strap of $2 bills or $1 bills and the serial numbers are all in sequence?Awesome video. Thanks.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. So here is my opinion on modern sequential bills. Modern being, 2000's and more recent.
      They most likely are not really worth that much beyond face value. I would suggest going through the bills, and pulling out the special ones.
      Those are the star notes, fancy notes, and error notes.
      One time, I was lucky enough to get an entire strap of $1 sequential star notes. But typically I would not hold on to the bills simply because they are in series.

    What do you do with the coins that you find in hunting that are valuable.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question TopFin!!!
      Depending on the value I would suggest a couple different ways of storing them.
      Lower end valuables like junk 40% and 90% silver coins I tend to simply throw in a ziplock bag or a bucket. Seal it and place them in a dry location. The goal here is just to store them in a place where they won't shift around much. Moving up. I have coin tubes that I use when I have a lot of About Uncirculated (AU) or Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins. These as their name suggests look like they just came out of the mint. Finally for very valuable coins, I have 2x2 flips as well as single airtight coin holders called capsules. These are for the single coins that are worthy of being stored on their own.
      Whenever possible try to store all of your coins / paper money in dry locations, away from extreme temperatures (hot/cold), and if possible away from direct sunlight.
      Summary:
      low valuables - ziplock bags / airtight buckets
      mid-level valuables - plastic coin tubes or paper coin tubes
      high-level valuables - 2x2 flips or airtight capsules
      There is a trade-off. The more durable/safer the method of storage, typically the more expensive it becomes. If possible I would suggest buying in bulk.
      I know this is a lot of information. So keep your questions coming if you have any more.
      Happy Hunting!!!

    • @chrismichael4976
      @chrismichael4976 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if he meant where do you sell them. Many people collect, others stack, others simply cash in like finding antiques. I don't do much numismatic for keeping, only go for intrinsic value, get rid of numismatics except for some silver canadian mint series or morgans, good demand and don't lose much if we were to go into a depression which is not as unlikely as some imagine it to be.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I haven't been selling much lately. But there are plenty of ways to sell your junk silver (90% & 40%) coins. First do your own due diligence, and find out what your coins are worth. Even having just a basic idea will help you avoid selling at a discount. I would avoid or be careful with craigslist and those dealers advertising on CL who only offer cut-throat prices.

    • @chrismichael4976
      @chrismichael4976 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      xxJOBIIIxx thanks for your take but i wouldn't sell junk silver to anyone now, not at these prices anyway. I've been buying cull and vg Peace dollars and Morgans when I have any $ which isn't often anymore haha. No I meant that some find numismatics to sell and then use the $ from that to purchase coins w/actual intrinsic value.
      Lets say we hit Great Depression Part II I don't think many people are going to give a terd about where a mint mark is placed but they damn sure will want to know if there is intrinsic value.
      Thanks for sharing, *there are* a lot of cut throats out there. I've only bought from one large online dealer (JM) and a couple local shops who's owners I have gotten to know well. Problem is that I just moved so we start again (only two reputable coin shops w/in 45 miles of me now) thanks again

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know of only one brick and mortar shop that I wholly trust and ultimately buy from. The rest I avoid because the rates offered just aren't that good. I try to mainly buy junk silver because there is less of a premium. Silver dollars and .999 Bullion come into the picture less often as a result. But to each their own.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and no. You can always ask to buy currency from the bank, and it may include silver certificates. But banks are not simply holding those notes for people to buy them. At this point it's a matter of luck.

  • @rodneygreenway982

    What are the fees associated with ordering the boxes through the bank. Is there any places to stay away from? Is it safe to say that the banks have caught wind of this and have been pulling the silvers? Thanks.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rodney Greenway,
      NO FEES! If you do this right the bank allows you to order and return as much coin and currency as you want. Just make sure you confirm this with the bank and treat each bank with respect. When a bank starts to issue you fees, you know they are just trying to get rid of you or make you stop using them.
      I do not feel that banks have been pulling silver. Many in fact prevent tellers from buying coins from the bank while working. I think it's just more people are CRHing and that has helped reduce what silver you could get in bank boxes.
      Happy Hunting,
      xxJobIIIxx

    don't know if you have them in the states but here in ecuador there are atm machines that allow you to make deposits to your account and quite a few of them accept coins. might be best way to return coins.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's pretty interesting. Here in the US people can find banks that allow uncounted bagged coin deposits. But it's not really common, and if you don't have a counter of your end you could end up being shorted.
      By the way, do you coin roll hunt in Ecuador? Can you find silver or other interesting coins in circulation?

    • @rick5078
      @rick5078 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can't get coin rolls here. banks only deal in bills and small amounts of change at the counters. but sometimes you can find coins of certain sets in circulation, but no silver.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks very much for the advice. But I was wondering, do you think that you would still be able to do this with success if you lived in a large city? Or would the coin rolls you get in big cities tend to have less silver in them? Just curious. Thanks!!!

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Okay would CRHing be better in small or large cities??
      I'm not sure about that. Larger cities would mean more turnover of some denominations of coins. But half dollars are really circulated anyways. So in my opinion, I think the luck around CRHing is really in the numbers NOT location. Typically people I know that are actively CRHing, report better success the more they do it. This sometimes also turns into large skunk streaks. But basically searching more boxes and doing it on a regular basis each week or month would be the best way to go about it.
      Afterthought: Looking for copper pennies or silver in dimes and quarters may be worse in large cities.
      Hope this helps. Happy Hunting!!!

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically, yes you can.
      There are 2 forms of rolls of coins. Customer wrapped rolls (CWRs) and Federally wrapped rolls. One is machine wrapped the other is hand rolled by other customers.
      Personally I always opted for federally wrapped rolls, because they were consistent in count. I know a lot of people that actually prefer to get the CWRs. One reason you have good chances of getting collections other people deposit at the banks.
      Great question and happy hunting!!!

    what are key dates?

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nolan Bankeroff,
      In coin collecting, a key date refers to a date (or date and mint mark combination) of a given coin series or set that is harder to obtain than other dates in the series. The next level of difficult to obtain coins in series are often referred to as semi-key dates or simply semi-keys.
      let me know if you have any other questions.

      That's correct. brown edge usually means coin is not 90% silver. It could be a dirty silver coin. So until you get good at edge hunting I would also suggest date hunting.

    i work at a store that has a machine to give out money but i refill the machine from rolled coins, i find mostly silver dimes, atleast 1 in most boxes that i put into the machine, found many wheat pennies and even a indian head penny

  • @oflores1727
    @oflores1727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    where do you get these boxes

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These boxes are available at most banks and credit unions around the US. One typically is allowed to order these through the bank after becoming a customer. You don't have to sign-up for anything fancy, certainly not a business account.
      My typical plan would begin with a discussion with the bank manager and vault manger. The VM typically was responsible for ordering coin and cash. If the bank would all me to order boxes and currency, I would go forward with opening a savings or checking account. The priority would be to have an account that did not require activity and was fee free.
      Hope that helps.

    What do you do with the coins after you search them? Roll them and bring them back? Or coin star or do you know of a bank that has a free coin counter?

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Returning coins without a coin counting machine sounds pretty daunting. But there are options besides going to a CoinStar.
      If you're returning half dollars, most banks that you have an account with will let you either bag them yourself, or return rolled for an immediate deposit into your account. This isn't always the case.
      And for the other locations I work with. I typically return bank bags with a known amount of a single denomination inside. I deposit this to the bank manager and the coin bag goes to a location for counting before getting credited to my account. The process is slow but accurate. This means you have to either float more cash or sort less because the money takes longer to get back into your account.
      With coin counters no longer being a major this at most banks, I encourage you to work with banks that allow this type of scenario to play out.
      Happy Hunting!!!

    Actually to correct all of you, there were a very small amount of copper pennies made in 1982 but the majority was 95% zinc

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First off. Awesome name and avatar!!!
      Here is some more info from Wiki regarding the copper pennies transition in 1982 to majority zinc.
      In mid-1982, the pennies composition was changed again, this time to copper-plated zinc. The last mostly-copper cents (95% copper metal composition) were produced by the Denver Mint on October 22, 1982. The copper-plated zinc cent coins are still being produced today.
      Personally. When I started hand sorting pennies, all 1982's were put in a bucket. These would later be sorted using a flip (ring) test, or a scale. At least a third or higher were copper. Once I switched to a machine sorter, I stopped keeping track of the ratio.
      Thanks for commenting!

    What do I do when I find a silver coin do I keep it forever or sell it somewhere?

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      To hold or sell, is up to you. But before you sell it, first find out more about the coin. It could be valuable for reasons beyond the silver content. Once you learn the value of it, then decide what to do with it. I typically tell people to hold onto silver coins. So that's sort of my biased answer.

    Hey, is there any way that you can lose money by doing this?

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great Question!
      There are 2 ways that you can lose money doing this.
      ***DISCLAIMER***
      I really hope my response doesn't turn you or anyone else away from CRHing. CRHing in general is really fun and you will have the ability to find really rare coins / bills for around face value. I just also want to stress from personal experience that a little planning at the start is super helpful in the long run for avoiding issues while CRHing.
      Situation #1:The most simple way you can lose money is if the box of coins / bills do not contain the stated amount. This sounds like it would never happen, but believe me it does happen fairly often. I've even gotten to a point to monitor this and then switch branches depending on the armored couriers that deliver.
      Quick fix: check the coin boxes before leaving to make sure the correct number of rolls are in the box. As you get better at this, you may also be able to recognize a coin roll that is not filled properly. In both cases note them upon purchase as resolution of the issue is a lot easier before you take the coins out of the bank and rolls.
      Situation #2: Opting to invest time / resources into CRHing over something more valuable. You can ultimately lose you money over time putting resources into this and not having a plan. Coins and bills forever retain the value noted on them, yes. But the value of money you hold onto over time may lose out to inflation as well as other financial options available to you. Also the time and money spent acquiring these coins and returning them should not be ignored.
      Solution: Decide at the start what you are trying to get out of this. If it's a hobby and you just want to embrace CRHing, coin collecting, and the fun that numismatics brings, great!!! In this scenario you're not expecting to make financial gains, as it is just fun.
      However if you would like to do this for the purpose of investing or making money. You really need to do your research.
      What coins are you looking to hold and for how long.
      How are you going to store them, do you have proper environment for storage?
      Where are you selling them (online, brick & mortar shops, coin shows, free online ads)
      Where are you getting the coins / returning them.
      How much time is being spent on this project
      What are your monetary costs in picking-up / returning coins / money
      When I first started CRHing, I would hold onto almost every coin I found that may have value beyond it's face value. Then you realize the collection is growing and is basically full of coins that aren't that valuable and are hard to sell for a profit. Downsizing a collection after putting time, money and effort into acquiring can be really hard and even painful. I'm still downsizing.
      Do your research up front, have a plan and you should avoid a lot of the main pitfalls for situation #2.
      Happy Hunting!!!

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lol cool.
      Yes so i think the big thing I would focus on with CRHing at your age is your bankroll. Holding onto every coin that could sell for a profit is perhaps the wrong way to go if you have a limited amount of funds. Same thing if you're holding them as part of a coin collection.
      Just holding silver coins makes the cut-off pretty black & white. Same thing for low run star notes if you are searching currency.
      If you have any questions please continue to ask.

      xxJOBIIIxx great advice!!!

  • @YoloBagels
    @YoloBagels 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Actually, 1982 an older is 95% copper, 1958-1909 are wheat cents, 1909-1859 are Indian heads, 1856-1858 are flying eagle cents, and anything before are large cents. I find half dollars very good for finding silver because they have not been popular to CRH ever since their purge in 1970. Also Pennies are best to CRH if you're on a budget, only $25 per box.

    So the bank with the coin counter... does it charge you for using that

    • @andrewrogers2575
      @andrewrogers2575 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally, the machine doesn't give the exact amount that you should and that's how they charge you. For example, let's say you put in $200 worth of pennies, the machine would give you &198 dollars and keep the extra $2.

    • @xxJOBIIIxx
      @xxJOBIIIxx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So we have a ton of experience with coin counters. Perhaps way too much.
      Most coin counters at banks will charge a non-member fee. Coin counters like CoinStar charge everyone. And there are some out there that just charge everyone. AVOID THESE ONES!!!!
      Avoiding fees:
      Easy most places require you become a member of that financial institution. This usually requires a bank account and some small amount of money to sit in the account. Do your homework and you'll find that many places allow a small one-time deposit for full access to the coin counter fee free.
      Issues with coin counters:
      About a year ago coin counters were found to be less than accurate. There is actually an ongoing class action lawsuit involving TD banks penny arcade. Long story short they weren't accurate people sued and now TD bank has no active coin counters at any locations.
      These were great in getting to sort through large quantities of coin and returning loose coins.
      Returning loose coins (Best Practices):
      When returning coins. It is a really good idea to return them separated and know the amount you are returning. This is super helpful when you see a value that is below the amount you expected to return.
      How can you do this?
      Either count the coins or weigh them before returning them.
      Weighing the same denomination of coin can give you a very accurate dollar value after a couple simple conversions.
      As we mentioned above we have spent far too much time at the coin counter counter.
      Cheers and Happy Hunting!!!
