To be fair, the US-charts are a good indicator for the international availability of a song (that's at least my theory). Once you made it past their gates, you get more exposure everywhere, and foreign markets are more ready to ask for more, even if the American public loses interest.
The song also mashes up _ridiculously_ well with John Newman's _Love Me Again_ (aka The _Edge of Tomorrow_ End Credits Song). Seriously. Gives me chills every time.

Thanks for reminding me of that record, "I've Been Thinking About You" by Londonbeat; always really liked it. One of the oddest one hit wonders was "Living in Oblivion" by Anything Box. The lyrics in the hook are so melodramatic as to be unintentionally campy and yet the record was quite catchy. "What is Love" was a big dance club hit in the clubs here. That was when Arista Records was really putting out a lot of great pop and dance tunes (Taylor Dane, Expose, Haddaway, Ace of Base). The production on this record is a big part of its hook. I never even heard any of Haddaway's follow-up singles once here in L.A.

I never knew about the SNL sketch until about a year ago when I was randomly searching for the song. Growing up in the UK during the 90s it was unavoidable.
I still love that you even mentioned 2Unlimited, because I was juuust old enough to be there for it when they became REAL big, only I always thought they only got big in the Netherlands. It wasn't until approximately 20 years later that I realised they were actually KNOWN beyond their (and my) own country and it still makes me proud the way in that silly "yay home team" way.

I remember when it was a hit. It was big enough, but not nearly as big as SNL seemed to think. Bear in mind, dance clubs were huge then, so something being played often at a dance club made it relevant then, in a way that I don't think is true now.

Every love song I've ever actually liked are over the top Love songs like "I need a Hero" "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, "Accidentally in love" by Counting Crows also has a lot of energy. I had an immediate and visceral reaction to that 5-second clip of "What is Love 2k9," god damn. That was.... something.
I remember when it was a hit. It was big enough, but not nearly as big as SNL seemed to think. Bear in mind, dance clubs were huge then, so something being played often at a dance club made it relevant then, in a way that I don't think is true now.
~7:20 I completely agree that the song sounding "big" gives it a nice feeling. Every love song I've ever actually liked are over the top Love songs like "I need a Hero" "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, "Accidentally in love" by Counting Crows also has a lot of energy. Disney love songs are a bit of an exception
