Very Detailed! I'm not even half way through and she's provided a lot of insight! Appreciate the questions you're asking HD! It helps that she's very thorough in her responses too. No fluff, ALL gems. I really enjoyed listening to her journey. She left nothing up to faith. She went out and sought out training, networking and applied it to get where she is regardless of the roadblocks. A lot of your guests seem to have that in common as cybersecurity professionals. This is right on time-thanks for this! I have a Cyber Compliance company that my uncle threw me into.🙂 He consults as Compliance Officer and charges $300 an hour. Most of his work is through government contracts though. I still have much to learn & experience-Love this!☺️
Exactly, it's really difficult to pivot into GRC from other careers. Usual path for GRC is: Internship at Big4 and get your CISA/CISSP, then leave Big4 and go to GRC Management positions in other companies. If you do a quick job search, you will notice that 95% GRC positions are manager level or above. There is literally no chance of pivoting to GRC if you are moving from another career non-management position. (You may have a little chance if you are pivoting from another career(but related) manager or above position into it)
This is EXACTLY what I’m going through in my GRC role. As far as no training. I suggest identify ppl who have been doing this for years and ask for help. That’s been helpful for me. Also, read. There’s a lot of reading in GRC. I’m currently working with CUI which uses NIST 800-171/A. I may have read those two docs 3x each. I’ll be reading them again soon. I like GRC. Would love to see more of us in the role.
Thank you so much for this interview, Aria! She explained the entire process for the Risk Management Framework. I am switching to a different career path, a Linux system administrator, and into GRC. GRC is a better fit for me as I get older because the fast-paced DevOps environment is tiring for me. We also have to consider transitioning roles as we get older, and consulting is where I am heading. Again, thank you for your thorough explanation of GRC.
Great to see the spotlight here on what is often an unseen path. If done well and in the right industry company and culture, GRC is awesome and underrated. It’s revenue enabling, provides breadth of exposure across departments, exposure to top management, gets your foot in the door for GRC and the need for assurance work is growing. I especially liked your points about (1) not expecting a training plan to get you from zero to hero on day one. Jump in and find ways to add value; (2) having a continuous learning mindset with reading and course work, (3) making a structured work schedule, (4) networking and gaining practical experience to take your career to the next level.
