Kenny's sword rn is basically some shit he found on the ground that's how he treats it. When he fights its just him, his power, no teamwork like every other soul reaper connected to their sword. Thats part of what makes him such a freak, just casually captain level in his strength.
I was lucky enough to read the manga in its entirety and watch the anime when they were originally released. Looking back at these old episodes, the sheer amount of foreshadowing (especially just in this fight) is insane. It's obvious that this was set up to explain to the audience the importance of working in tandem with a zanpakuto. But the presence of Hollow Ichigo, the exact nature of Old Man Zangetsu... And of course, everything involving Kenpachi. You're right to say that he could be so much stronger, and he _absolutely_ will be. This is him at his weakest. Cutting through a building is and letting his face get sliced are nothing. Seriously, this just a tiny fraction of what he's capable of, and he's still one of the strongest characters. The TYBW anime hasn't quite caught up to the point where he shows off his full capabilities, but the manga readers know all too well what's coming.
It's actually quite hilarious how much, as we learned later, that BOTH of these 2 were so massively nerfed in this fight. Makes me want to see what their fight now, post TYBW, would turn out. Ichigo is most likely more powerful, but Kenny is more physically imposing I bet. It would be awesome 💯

Also, Kenny regularly shakes off seemingly fatal attacks. He treats impalement as a nuisance. He'd probably still give Ichigo a good fight even at the end of the series.

In Naruto, we all were just itching for the next time he goes Nine Tails mode. For Bleach, it's Hollow Ichigo. His maniacal laughter gets me everytime😂
I always liked White more because ***spoilers*** White is just literally a part of ichigo, he's not some outside force, it's part of his true nature and I remember feeling like this even before it was explicitly revealed, White talks way too personally to Ichigo for him to just be some random evil spirit shoved inside of him, and for an edgy teenager a message about accepting the parts of yourself that make you uncomfortable, parts that could never be removed and are just innate to you, is pretty cool
"Dude you could be stronger" And why would Kenny do that? He wants to enjoys fighting. He even wear bells and an eye-patch that constantly eats away spiritual energies so that he would have a handicap in a battle.
FUN MANGA FACT: When “White” Ichigo has Zangetsu on his shoulder while he’s smirking you can see his reflection in the blade with a very somber almost disappointed expression. Maybe he’s not as antagonistic as he makes himself out to be perhaps? Side note, when Ichigo asks him who he is he responds “Oh come on. You know me, Partner.”
I'm so glad you guys noticed the subtitles. If possible I'd suggest turning them off if you can / are willing to pay a bit more attention. A lot of times they're useful, I get it, but that subtitle bit IS a spoiler even if you don't know the full implications just yet. If I recall correctly it's only a spoiler for like, one or two episodes ahead that will explain it, but still. Plus, they're kinda objectively bad subtitles, in terms of being correct to what is said, typos, etc.
the english title of the episode is such a dumb translation, the name of the tome is The Undead. Much more scary and fitting to Kenpachi fighting like some hell creature lol. When I was a kid he even reminded me some sort of vampire idk why
Kenpachi going FULL Kenpachi will never not be the highlight of this arc for me honestly. Kubo putting what feels like a climactic final clash mid way through his arc is a great mood setter for the rest of it.
All there is to say is remember this episode as much as you can; there are a lot of details here for both Kenny and Ichigo. Went back and counted like 12 small story details in this episode to give you an idea :). You won't notice them until later.

The subs sometimes spoil names of character that are supposed to be mysterious. Just like the ninetails name was spoil hundreds of episodes earlier due to the subs.
there is no hollow version in soul reapers, but its an exception to ichigo and certain few (wont be named due to spoilers) but its those that for a moment become hollows and yet remain soul reapers. ichigo is part hollow and soul reaper and the white him is his hollow self
I'm writing this assuming the Normies have already seen episode 40. The result of this fight is really such that rather than saying definitively one side won and the other side loss, despite what even they say about it, it was more of a draw than anything. Ichigo getting a draw against Kenpachi is testament enough for his abilities and potential alone. But when you look on this fight so much later in the series, you know this fight doesn't really mean much comparing Kenpachi's strength and Ichigo's strength.
We finally meet...him...let's call him White for now, let's keep the mystery. Each time we meet him or "Old man" Zangetsu, something major change for Ichigo ! One of the most fascinating interaction in all of Bleach !! So many foreshadowing...
The first thing Zangetsu asked was "Do you want to win, or do you want to live?" When he asked it, most would interpret it as "Do you just want to survive, or do you want to win", but by the end of the fight it became "You can either win or live, pick one".
Ichigo fighting Zangestu while his Quincy overseer just watch is amazing. Zangestu telling the Quincy all that power will be his eventually s just haunting. People think when train him well "Zangestu" he was referring to himself.
