    Summary:
    Originally broadcast on MTV as the headline act of its New Year's Eve broadcast and simulcast on FM radio for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set from the popular British New Wave rockers Duran Duran marks their first major New York City triumph.
    The group, which was spearheaded by vocalist Simon LeBon, had ruled the MTV charts since the end of the previous year, but they did not take off on radio as rapidly. For this show, Duran Duran was not only performing to a packed house at New York's Palladium Theater, they were playing to millions of viewers all over the world. The stakes were high, and Duran Duran went for the gold. Shortly after this performance, in early 1983, "Rio" was in the U.S. Top 10.
    All the essential early hits are featured here - including "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Girls On Film." The show is interrupted to count down the New Year on MTV, but otherwise it remains a consistently upbeat show. The group augmented its original five-piece lineup with the addition of saxophonist/keyboard player Andy Hamilton.
    This performance showcases the band when they were on the brink of worldwide stardom, if they weren't already there. The success of Duran Duran during this time period gave them enough momentum to get through most of the eighties as a successful act. It would also serve as the base of hits to keep the band poised for more than one reunion in the years that followed.

    Everyone comment and praise the bassist this and drummer that but without the genius voice of Simon the band wouldn’t even exist. The guiatarist was replaced and the band still goes on. If the bassist and drummer are replaced the band will still go on. Try to replace Simon and we’ll see if the band goes on. Genius and unique voice

      This was also before low wattage LED lighting too. Those can lights back in the day were HOT. Like, cook your skin if you touched them hot. That is why they were always sweating so much on stage back then.

    • @derekbaker3279
      @derekbaker3279 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was an analogue version of simple auto-tune back then, as well as very effective de-essing, compression, and most effects that are available today. I would think that, by this point, Duran Duran had made enough money to afford those sorts of rack effects and/or the venue had them. Regarding this video, there is plenty of software capable of auto-tuning instruments and vocals, correcting timing errors, de-essing, etc even with final stereo mixes (look up "Melodyne"), and a lot of it can be done quite subtlely. I'm not saying that it was done here, but it could have been. (my gut says it was...it's a little too perfect for even the best live bands...Simon's singing actually sounds better than it did on their debut album IMHO, so either he mastered the art further by being on tour, or...???....but I could be wrong....)

    I'm around the age of these guys and I remember hearing about them in the early to mid 80s and thought they were just a passing fancy. I was a heavy metal guy but then they did you to kill from James Bond and then John and Andy did power station with Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson from Chic and then I completely saw them differently. I never thought Duran would be around in 2024.

    I can't put into words my excitement for this video. I was a 12-year old 7th grader sitting in my bedroom in Fontana, CA listening to this cassette on a Sony Walkman that my Stepdad won from a Copier convention he attended(he worked for Savin Copiers), and gave to me while this beautiful party was just a hour, and a half away in Hollywood, CA. It was my first cassette I ever bought. Changed my life. I still want to meet these guys some day. I was too young, and have since been to a couple shows here, but nothing like this. Life is so weird that true fans often miss out on such experiences......I was one of a few Black Kids that wore their shirts, and pins to school religiously enduring funny looks from other black kids, but still not caring, because this music talked to me for some reason that I still can't explain today.....I totally had a similar muscle shirt with Japanese symbol that Simon is wearing(in maroon)......I will never regret these days. They called it the 2nd British Invasion, and compared them to the Beatles, and they were all over the news this night......I think a couple radio stations broadcasted this performance live if I remember correctly.................

There are some DD songs I can't see anyone else doing justice as he owns them vocally. I will say that there are a few DD songs that I would have liked to hear with Andy's voice more out front (Careless Memory comes to mind) or maybe have Andy switch off in terms of leading vocals with Simon on a few songs to add a different flavor. Andy's early solo career showed off his voice more and IMO he had good enough vocals for this too have seriously been considered on a few tracks. Roger is my favorite! Looked like James Dean back then and played the hell out of those drums! I love the few times we saw Nick without makeup when he was young. He was so handsome natural.
