The part that looks like a battery, is actually a XH414 supercapacitor which is used to hold the ephemeris data for warm and hot starts. The supercapacitor should hold the ephemeris data for perhaps a few weeks(?) before discharging. Retaining the ephemeris data helps achieve a fast lock (warm/hot start). Many devices these days are moving away from normal batteries since a supercapacitor is rechargeable many times has a longer service life before it goes bad (10-15 years). In this case, when it does go bad, you will lose the warm/hot start functionality, the unit should still work doing a cold start every time.

They are not a commodity item that is going-to be readily available at one't neighborhood store, but could be ordered from an electronics distributor. If the super capacitor had failed while the rest of the device was still working, and one replaced it, then yes hot start would again work.
Those also work on Android and permit long cables to position the unit for strongest signal. You can turn plentiful cheap Android tablets into GPS units.

If attach it to a WiFi only iPad mini using type A to type C adaptor, would it work with google maps on the iPad directly ?
