Are we really doing that much more with computers than we were back then? I don’t think so. Software today has just gotten so bloated and heavy. Sucks.
did you repaste the cpu? if its running really hot it might be that the cpu needs repasted... also the fans could be dirty... also try macs fan control app... u can basically set the fan rpm to what ever you want...
In a previous video we opened this Mac up, completely dismantled it and cleaned it. Then we upgraded the CPU to a t7600, put an SSD in it, then installed 4gb of ram. We'll return to this mini again in the future.
Trying to boot this 2006 macmini. I upgraded the CPU to the 64 bit variant and bumped memory to 4gb with 128gb SSD. It's booting but it is so slow. And mine is toasty too. I have a desk fan cooling it.
Yeah I was hoping for a lot better with this project. The heat is just something that cannot be fixed without hacking the case up or keeping the fan at 100% all the time.
Perhaps you can use it like a single burger grill 😂 I was asking the TV what you used for heat xfer then you mentioned paste and I breathed a sigh of relief. Good luck with that little thing, I'll keep watching for updates!
Looking at the thermal layout, you may want to try cutting off the pieces redirecting the exhaust in the back and leave it open. It was holding steady with no case, which indicates that the problem could be with the case itself; I don't think it's the fan since blower fans are designed for negative pressure enclosures ie laptops, so it's likely it just can't get the heat out. Additionally, pull up "System Monitor" in Mint and it should show you CPU/RAM utilization, which you can use to see how badly Firefox is limited (or not) by the machine.
Have you tried resetting the SMC or installing Mac-specific Linux fan control software (such as mbpfan)? That GMA950 GPU sucks so maybe also run at a lower resolution 🙂
It was so nice to be able to upgrade Mac components.....now you pay 200$ difference between 256 and 512GB SSD - an upgrade that you could do yourself with 30$ if only the SSD was not soldered ;)
Got one of these for free at a garage sale the other day. I had the same idea but I don’t want to put any money into it, so looks like Linux isn’t even an option. I’ve revived plenty of old laptops with Linux. I guess it’s going to eBay, looks like people are using them for something because I see about 60 have sold in the past 90 days avg $40-$60.
hey i will be doing the same upgrade and linux install this year. i tried linux mint prior to the upgrade but could t so much due to it just being a 32bit CPU. FYI macos X is macos 10, if you say X as the letter your saying it wrong and coming across as a noob
@@idoesstuff1 I had to get the same mini to get me thru a graphics course, my previous machine couldn’t handle it. i still have it to this day and it still works, i put in an SSD to make it run faster, but the optical drive had died and took it out. mine also seems to be running hot and i plan to put it in a pc case for better cooling and some other changes too :)
What is crazy to me is how this computer was so FAST when it was new. It just can't keep up with modern OS/Internet.

@@WalnutOW Software has gotten more bloaded, so have file sizes and compression and encryption.
What fun ... I have a late 2006 Mac mini sitting-in-a-box in the back bedroom. - Paul, WB5AGF

Dismantle, clean, repaste and rebuild. That's what this mini needs.

oh man, I don't recall what year mine was but it was the last generation of that style of macmini. I think it had a Core 2 of some srot on it.

Wait... you can install a 64-bit Linux on a 2006 mac-mini. I have a 32-bit version of Ubuntu installed. I thought Core 2 duo was 32-bit only.
New 3D printed case?

I'll revisit this soon. I've gotten a lot of good ideas from the comments that I'd like to try out.

Did you scrape off the old thermal paste and apply new?
I did. It got a good cleaning and fresh paste along with the new hardware to hold it securely.
@@idoesstuff1 Excellent. Have you tried Lubuntu? The lesser CPU/RAM requirements of LXQt vs XFCE may help with the overheating.

With you lights and the screen flicker it looked like a face ish
Maybe make a laptop style lap cooler.. say a 140mm fan mounted on a wood frame with a keyhole vent hole
I'm not sure I want to have to have some kind of special base needed to keep this thing cool but know that I have thought of that. Thanks!
@@idoesstuff1 only other solution would be a custom water loop with a external pump and radiator should as the zalman

My Favorite Accident a Few Years Back.
Put BATOCERA On it! You Will not be Dissapointed
I'll give that a try, I think Mint just stresses the system out too much.
I got exactly this setup for my parents
It actually is a very peppy system but I really wish I could get this thing to run cooler.
It's dead, Jim.
