My grandmother, the Austrian journalist Gusti Stridsberg, was a communist sympathizer who lived and worked in Moscow during the mid-thirties and served as an interpreter and translator at the Comintern. In her autobiography she describes the faith that the Russians of that era had in communism as an almost religious fervor. She left when the purges started, spent some time in a Gestapo prison, worked as a journalist and nurse during the Spanish Civil War and ended up in Stockholm, where she once again fell in with Soviet agents..... Her autobiography has been translated from the original German into both Swedish and English.

A wonderful interview with two intelligent people. My father was a CIA operative, he the son of Russian immigrants. I led a childhood not knowing of my father’s mischief, living after the war in Frankfurt, then Bangkok, and finally Rio de Janeiro. Being in the Soviet Division of the Agency, he was involved in some of the well known spy affairs like Penkovsky and others. He debriefed Victor Balenko who escaped out of Siberia to Japan with one of their latest MiGs. My father later turned out to be a somewhat surrogate father to Victor. And I happened to go to school with Robert Rosenberg at the University of Michigan in the 60s. Robert is seemingly still to the Left as I swerved to the right. Anyway, I saw a lot in Jack that was in my father. And if my father did lie he would always follow the example of Jack in telling my mother how nice she looked, regardless.
That former Kgb agent reiterated that all Russian politicians, generals, bishops and the rest immediately agree with the leader, whatever he may say or do. That explains those bods....Lavrov, Peskov, Medvedev, and the rest, and probably 80% of Russians. This goes back to the histories over there, whereby anyone that disagreed with the government got punished, either pick and shovel and wheelbarrow on the permafrost in Siberia, or worse. It was good to hear Jack Barsky's comment about his very best German friend who has sided with Poutine in Ukraine War one of the closest friends in my life is Russian (also a chemist), who is also "sided with Poutine" in the Ukraine war. i understand both the pain and acceptance of the very difficult difference. i was born is Silicon Valley, and worked there much of my life. I share Barsky's apprehension about the risk of Ai over the same potential to be of powerful service to evil. And yes Russian culture is wonderful, Russia people are amazing, Russian leadership is brutal, corrupt & evil.

He nailed it. Russia was never a great nation and what it produces over its vast lands is of limited interest to the world. Grain and oil, and the oil was already there. But I do get the point: destroy Ukraine (including civilians), and you have more wheat, more natural resources (stolen with a curse on it all), and control of the oil, fertilizer… pipelines. Then Russia will have the ability to attack more nations. Makes sense. I played RISK. Only real people are dying for one man’s ambitions.
As far as Ukraine’s resources, Ruzzia doesn’t so much need them as it wants to block Ukraine from being a reliable and friendly supplier of those resources to Europe. Ruzzia wants to have a monopoly on pipeline oil and gas to Europe, easily accessible titanium, etc. The main resource Ruzzia wants from Ukraine is Ukrainians. Ruzzia is suffering from severe demographic issues and its population is shrinking rapidly, with basically no immigration to slow or stop the slide. This will be a calamity for Ruzzia, which already has a labor shortage and a shortage of military-aged men. It wants to add as many people (especially young people) as possible from Ukraine, Russify them, steal their engineering prowess, and use them to prop up Ruzzia’s economy and military. And of course, let’s not forget the overriding goal of this whole war and Ruzzia’s aggressive foreign policy in general.....focusing the Ruzzian people on external “threats” to keep their attention away from the massive theft of the country’s wealth that he and his cronies have perpetrated.

For me the moments around the 10minute mark made the most sense - the explanation of riots outside Putain's work says it all - it scared him (and scarred him) and formulated his attitude just like a very similar experience that Louis XIV had when the Frondeurs burst into his bedroom. Sure some will be fine like people with a larger income but within a year or two they will face economic conditions far worse than n the 80s USSR and they are not prepared for this.

The interviewee seems surprisingly ignorant about Ukraine.... he was surprised he understood two Ukrainians speaking in Russian!! Like being surprised hearing a Welshwoman speaking English!!. Kate handled his ignorance well... with a little smile and moved on. He sounded as if he was going to say something interesting about the similarity between Ukrainian and Russian spying techniques and instead talked about the two Ukrainian women. Previously much of the information he conveyed was from books he'd read ( he said so himself).. one of them by an English journalist, or TV shows , such as the one about Russian 'sleepers' in the US. He was also confused sometimes but Kate was very good and let him contradict himself and let him ramble too. He said he learned to be a very good liar. I believe him
In a lot of ways the west helped build and perpetuate that Russia legend by its neurotic fear of the spread of communism and the hyper blown reaction in Macarthyism. Even now its tepid response plays into the narrative and that they are given a seat at the security council which is so undeserved. Most probably the west was grateful for SOVIET (not Russia) help in WW2 unfortunately the payment for their help is the reason we are here. There's a certain naivety more so in America that prevented action sooner or maybe it was fear and who could blame them whennthey were nurtured from childhood to fear Russia as America's greatest threat. Churchill with all his faukts knew the price of appeasemnt and that it increases the threat, in some cases, rather than decreases it. Stasiland is a very good book. Accounts from those who resisted in East Germany and the Stasi officials. Russian youth today have no clue of that era.

As far as Ukraine’s resources, Ruzzia doesn’t so much need them as it wants to block Ukraine from being a reliable and friendly supplier of those resources to Europe. Ruzzia wants to have a monopoly on pipeline oil and gas to Europe, easily accessible titanium, etc. The main resource Ruzzia wants from Ukraine is Ukrainians. Ruzzia is suffering from severe demographic issues and its population is shrinking rapidly, with basically no immigration to slow or stop the slide. This will be a calamity for Ruzzia, which already has a labor shortage and a shortage of military-aged men. It wants to add as many people (especially young people) as possible from Ukraine, Russify them, steal their engineering prowess, and use them to prop up Ruzzia’s economy and military. And of course, let’s not forget the overriding goal of this whole war and Ruzzia’s aggressive foreign policy in general.....focusing the Ruzzian people on external “threats” to keep their attention away from the massive theft of the country’s wealth that he and his cronies have perpetrated.
Yeah they were. In the 18th and 19th century they were very much great nations. Perhaps the preeminent power in the world though Spain and Qing China may have a word about that.

Realism is something very much amiss in western journalism
For me the moments around the 10minute mark made the most sense - the explanation of riots outside Putain's work says it all - it scared him (and scarred him) and formulated his attitude just like a very similar experience that Louis XIV had when the Frondeurs burst into his bedroom. He pretended to be asleep and miraculously they left him alone - but he never left that to chance again. And that seems exactly what is going on with Putain's psychology....

Anyway I see you your point, but I don't think they knew what they were doing. Kgb was in my mind overrated for many reasons, one of them was cuz of propaganda by creating fear and mystery from their very existence and a few single event. Like he said himself he didn't believe there was that many sleeping/invisible agents and that they rated him as an valuable asset. No saying that ther methods where not to be taken highly serious. Again just in my view, the danger was and still is even more today in the Russian power not the individuals but in their numbers and disregard for human life, willingness and persistence to do whatever it takes to get to the goal. I have a friend witch grandfather was a high ranking Russian military man and he told my friend many years ago that the Russian strategy was primarily always to create fear because it's the most effective way of changing peoples minds. And we see it plays out today on display for the hole world to view in Ukraine. That's also itself a part of Putin's last desperate attempt to sway support away from Ukraine. By creating as much fear as possible. But looking at history, at the end of the day Russia have never known exactly what their goal was and what they was doing. Their strategy is the easiest and most despicable one and perhaps the most effective in short term, but I am convinced that they will fail harder than ever before this time. Even if it takes perhaps years or a decade. In the end it's the Russian population that will suffer because of an insane idealogy that is not fit for a modern world. Sure some will be fine like people with a larger income but within a year or two they will face economic conditions far worse than n the 80s USSR and they are not prepared for this.

You can notice by the way he always finds a way to self-aggrandize and give total nonsense as answer to concrete questions like how many sleeper agents are currently active in the US. His answer "none!", but his reasoning: "it is very hard to train them and I was the best trained in this field". Basically putting himself as the GOAT of espionage. speaking in Russian!! Like being surprised hearing a Welshwoman speaking English!!. Kate handled his ignorance well... with a little smile and moved on. He sounded as if he was going to say something interesting about the similarity between Ukrainian and Russian spying techniques and instead talked about the two Ukrainian women. Previously much of the information he conveyed was from books he'd read ( he said so himself).. one of them by an English journalist, or TV shows , such as the one about Russian 'sleepers' in the US. He was also confused sometimes but Kate was very good and let him contradict himself and let him ramble too.
He said he learned to be a very good liar. I believe him

In a lot of ways the west helped build and perpetuate that Russia legend by its neurotic fear of the spread of communism and the hyper blown reaction in Macarthyism. Even now its tepid response plays into the narrative and that they are given a seat at the security council which is so undeserved. Most probably the west was grateful for SOVIET (not Russia) help in WW2 unfortunately the payment for their help is the reason we are here.
There's a certain naivety more so in America that prevented action sooner or maybe it was fear and who could blame them whennthey were nurtured from childhood to fear Russia as America's greatest threat. Churchill with all his faukts knew the price of appeasemnt and that it increases the threat, in some cases, rather than decreases it.
In the aftermath of WW2 where lines on a map were redrawn to artificially create nation states which eventuated in constant violent outbreaks and ethnic cleansing it must be obvious that there can be no compromise that involves "buffer zones ", ridiculous, or the giving away of any territory of Ukraine.
And given both sides paperclipping top Nazis (and one side starting the war along with Germany), it smacks of nobody being interested in potatoes until some fancypants put fancy guards around them during the day.
You are already give away substantial part of Ukraine including Crimia and will continue to give it away.
