NEW! at Harbor Freight - 4 in Doyle Bench Vise - Ductile Iron Bench Vise for Many Purposes

  • Harbor Freight hasn't been known for having the best bench vises. The Central Forge vises that have been around for quite a long time don't have the greatest reputation. Harbor Freight came out with a new line of Doyle Bench Vises. Doyle branded tools have been much higher quality tools than what people have expected from Harbor Freight based on their track record. I think the new Doyle Bench Vises will be a huge addition to the tools offered at Harbor Freight and is a great option being a ductile iron bench vise. I look forward to reviews on this tool to see how it withstands the test of time.

Harbor Freight does some things well. In my opinion, those things are the simple things, like floor jacks, jack stands and yeah...bench vices. Today was my day to shop, so I am freshly read on all of this. I REALLY liked what I read about that 6" Doyle you mention. But what I bought was lesser.
You see, here is the thing. I have been rolling with a 6" Olympia for the past three years. Until I started shopping for a new vise, and reading all about it...I had no idea that my vice was crap. Haha, my point is, even the crappiest vise on the market seems to be good enough for how I use it, or I would have noticed it's flaws long before reading about them today.
And that leads to the question: "At what level of vise do I get nothing out of the quality upgrade, because I will never notice the difference?" I wanted that 6" Doyle, because I was selling myself on it. But I had to be honest with myself, and allow for the fat that I do not need all $279.00 worth of it's goodness.
Instead, I remembered how I first heard Doyle's name, because they make one that attaches to a trailer hitch. Now THAT would be of value to me, as I make quarterly trips down to work on my elderly father's house...and he has nothing resembling a workshop to accommodate what I am working on while there. But if I bought that, I'd end up with something new that I'll use once every three months...and be stuck with the same old crappy Olympia in my own garage, where I do most of my work. That was when the lightbulb went off.
There is not a ule that I have to toss the old Olympia in the dumpster. Not at all. So, I bought a 6" Chinese Wilton. Whatever, it's still a big upgrade compared to what I had. I shopped around until I scored it at $150. Then, I spend another $50 and bought a trailer hitch mounting plate for the old Olympia. So, for 200...I got a nice upgrade for my shop at home, and a travel vice for the back of the truck.
Understand, I have a wife and three daughters. There is absolutely NO ONE who will understand what a genius I am on such topics. I really just wrote all of this because I was dying to say it SOMEwhere. If you read all the way down to here, you have way more patience with strangers than I do.
But I got it out so...now I can rest.

quality of this vise is amazing for $150. if you aren't looking to spend 700 plus on a usa made wilton this size, this is the best of the china vises this size i have come across. yost also had a good looking one but has been out of stock for months on their professional 4"

I just bought this same vise. I was surprised how well it was made. I was going to buy a CF but the Doyle felt so much better opening and closing. The jaws are nice and tight no slop. So far so good. Great video

Man the Doyle looks like it's leaps and bounds ahead of the central forge. Just looking at the thickness difference of the casting, and the size of the tightening screw. It just looks like a bigger better and more solid vice.

Definitely an upgraded vise. The Central Forge isn't bad, but I'll be able to beat it on the Doyle a harder. Thanks for the comment and watching as always!

Definitely. Assuming the material is as they claim, and has the tensile strength, then it should be on par with some other really good bench vises.

The Doyle is kinda built like a Wilton vise. Wilton uses that
C-shaped retaining washer in the front with 3 screws to attach it. The jaws are even shaped how a Wilton’s are.

Thanks for the great review & close-ups on this vise! I've been considering either 4 or 6-inch Doyle for my workshop at home & now that today I've just received a 25% off no exclusions coupon from HF, I want to go down & pick one up straightaway. Curious as to what type of surface you mounted it to & the thickness of the top you bolted it to? I have a cheapie 1/2-inch particle board benchtop that I need to replace so I am wondering if 3/4" maple plywood would suffice for either the 4 or 6-inch, or should I double up the maple sheet?

looks good. i picked up a yost adi-6 about 2 years ago. snagged it off amazon for 150$. paint had a nasty chip but contacted them and they sent me the magnetic jaws of my choice! good deal considering what it looks like now. dont sweat that little ding wont be noticable in a few months of welding and torch heating and banging!

I have the 6" Blue Vice and I use it for light jobs only. My buddy, who's a plumber has destroyed 3 of the blue vices and they will not take a pounding. You get near the blue vice with a sledge hammer and it will self destruct... Maybe I'll replace my blue vice if this thing has some decent strength...

It’s help up perfect. But I’ll be honest with you. I have really used it very hard. I put my central forge vise through way more in the same amount of time. I just haven’t had as much vise work to do with it I guess. I haven’t used it hard.
