DefZen343 I know Russian subsonic firearms are pretty famous for their quietness. I've shot the British L86A2 and L85 variants before though and it makes you realise how much they mute the sound even without silencers in video games. The first time I fired a loaded 5.56 firearm, my ear defenders weren't on properly and my ears were ringing for a minute or two. I'm still quite lucky to have the opportunity in the UK though as it's extremely difficult to fire a loaded weapon legally in this country.

That for almost certain would NOT penetrate walls, and most likely would hurt your attacker badly, but not kill him. Anyone taking a blast of birdshot at close range is going to have a very awful day and not doing backflips for fun anytime soon. That penetration business just seems to me like you may be as big a risk to your family as any attacker should you shoot and a few shot miss the bad guy.
No, birdshot causes shallow wounds and is not good for home defense, despite what some idiots think. Buckshot or .223 frangible or handgun are pretty much the best options.

What you're hearing is the sonic boom of buckshot/slug breaking the sound barrier. The silencer only suppresses the sound of the gun powder igniting.
