    People realize you take the medication for ADHD when you first wake up, right? At least most do.
    Going to sleep with ADHD is like going to sleep with a few televisions on randomly flipping through channels.
    If you ain't already falling asleep when you get in the bed, you ain't falling asleep when you get in the bed.

      That's the big risk in mis-diagnosis...
      Just because it's real does NOT mean the doctors are always right when they suggest it... AND this loses the credibility.
      In an ADHD sufferer, stimulants do not work the same as a "normal" person. A normal person gets "geeked"... anxious(?). An ADHD "authentic" does not.
      Unfortunately, and this guy's comments lend to this... Sleep deprivation presents very close to the same symptoms. AND the stimulants CAN return fairly normal function to the sleep deprived brain, for short terms...
      For parents and teachers, they don't have to feel it, so they don't know the difference. Neither do the kids, and it's unfortunate. BECAUSE the kids don't know enough about the world to argue when they're told, "The drugs are helping you."... SO they assume everyone has their best interests at heart and continue, right or wrong.
      The sleep deprived brain, over-charged on Stimulants will function relatively normal for a while. Then comes the crash... AND the doctors, parents, teachers, all start assuming that some resistance is building... SO give the kid MORE of the drugs... Another crash and the cycle repeats... at least until dangerous levels of this stuff are being administered or a more dangerous more powerful drug is applied... In the end, you have a young adult who crashes on the big stuff, can't seem to get his or her shit together anyway, and takes a downward spiral into depression. "Something is SERIOUSLY wrong with me"... The spiral of burn-out is horrible, isolating, painful, and often leads to alternatives to helpful solutions more than it leads to getting real help.
      It can seem the road to Hell really IS paved in the best intentions. ;o)

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ruben Lensvelt, I didn't intend to suggest you said anything of the sort... For the record, I agree with you.
      I also see that same comments section, and can understand that statements like yours are liable to draw attention from some of those who adamantly disagree... usually through an experience not unlike what I described.
      I worry about this because blanketing discredit to the suffering of authentic ADHD is just as harmful as the mis-diagnosis. This interview points out (in part anyway) that sleep deprivation is probably MORE likely the appropriate first line of thinking, rather than just assuming a young child is "acting out" because of ADHD...
      I worry because MY body doesn't respond to stimulants the same as other peoples' tend to... I can drink nearly a half-gallon of coffee and go right to sleep. I can also stand up to considerably more alcohol than most my same size, weight, and general athletic ability... Is there some degree of ADHD? I don't know. My parents swatted me across the side of my head and told me "even a damn rock can sit down and shut up..." SO I took the more survivable route... and shut up. BUT there probably are some few individuals who will simply NOT be capable of it. Seizure patients can NOT control themselves... it's the nature of seizures.
      My point is that maybe we should tend our own knitting. Maybe we don't really have a place to blanket our judgments of what is or is not "real" to someone else suffering a mental disorder, no matter how incredible or benign. Maybe we're allowed the dubious freedom to debate, but more in the sense (as non-experts anyways) to share notes and learn new avenues of research that might be helpful for us individually. In the end, you CAN lead a fool to water, but you CAN NOT make the idiot drink it.
      Although, drowning is occasionally a favorable alternative, I hear. ;o)

    As someone with ADHD, I can say that taking Ritalin (a stimulant) has actually allowed me to sleep much easier. Normally my brain does not stop looking for things to do when I want to sleep, but if I took a slow release dose of Ritalin in the morning, which begins to wear off mid afternoon, my brain is much more willing to "give up" in the fight against sleep when I start to feel tired. It's as though my ADHD brain thinks sleep is the enemy.

    Conflating young students who abuse the drug with all users is so irresponsible. People absolutely abuse these drugs, but that's not proof that all users are simply druggies who want a boost. Rogan literally admits to abusing the drug in this clip while simultaneously taking it upon himself to delegitimize people who actually require it. Shameful.

    I'll toss my hat into this topic. I had a bad experience with Straterra at a young age and convinced myself I didn't need the ADHD medication for the next 20 years, despite the fact that my grades suffered as soon as I stopped taking the pills. The next 20 years were full of forgetfulness, hyper activity, inability to concentrate, and bouts of intense frustration/anger.
    This year, I decided to go back to my doctor and discuss my situation. I was given Adderall XR and after just one day of taking it, I began to openly weep in front of my wife after work. I couldn't believe the difference in mood and ability to work. The constant bombardment of useless and irrelevant thoughts went away. I was able to start and easily finish a task without distraction. My ability to work improved so dramatically I even got a raise 4 months after starting Adderall.
    I understand people abuse Adderall and I understand ADHD is overly diagnosed, but there are also real people activity suffering from ADHD and the struggle of ADHD is no laughing matter, and faking ADHD to get Adderall is disgusting.

    • @bigpie8126
      @bigpie8126 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      couple things, starting with im sorry you had to go through untreated adhd I know how that feels. however, there is no evidence to support ADHD is overdiagnosed, some people do get misdiagnosed deliberate and not, but that's the same with everything. ADHD is lightly under diagnosed especially in women and being a spectrum less than half of ADHD people require medication at all with is not talked about. Secondly I understand that you are angry at the people that abuse adderall because it devaluates your experience and gives adhd a bad rep. However, it is affecting them much more than you and what usually happens is an adhd friend lets them try it and they get extremely addicted from a couple weeks of regular use, like any addiction people will go to great lengths to enable it. So using the word disgusting is a misjudgment and in my opinion anyway it's more a case of sad and possibly even selfish but not disgusting.

      Straterra is the first medication I tried for treating my ADHD. It worked quite well at helping me focus, but unfortunately, my body 'rejects' the drug. No matter how low of a dose, and even after a couple months on the drug, I would get nausea and throw up every day.
      Evidently, enough of the drug was metabolized before throwing up, since I obviously felt the effects. But yeah, not worth it. Vomiting every single day is not fun and it's not great for your health lol.
      Glad you found a medication that works well for you. :) I am on Dexedrine (extended release), have been on it for years now. I take it primarily for ADHD and it also helps me manage my narcolepsy. Stimulants are life-changing medications for many people, in the best possible way.

      When I was diagnosed I questioned the 'reality/authenticity' of ADHD. One reason was because they said my 'hyperfocus' was a main sign of ADHD. I asked;
      "hyper means too much right? And focus is synonymous with attention right? So you're saying I have too much attention and you're diagnosing me with a disorder characterised by a deficit in attention?"

    It's extremely common for people with ADHD to have sleep problems and even actual sleep disorders. These can make ADHD symptoms worse. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was 6, had my tonsils and adenoids removed and it stoped my sleep apnea. When I was 8, no sleep problems, I was diagnosed with ADHD. I'm almost 34 now and still am severely impaired by ADHD. Sleep problems may cause ADHD like symptoms, but ADHD causes sleep problems. This is why it takes someone who is very competent doctor to diagnose ADHD. As for the stimulant medication, it's true that it can interfere with sleep. This is usually a sign of not tolerating the medication, typically do to too high of a dose, the improper metabolization of the medication, or taking it too late in the day. All of which can be adjusted. Just like sleep issues, ADHD is something that should not be taken lightly.

    I love stigmas they’re my fave so here’s my problem adhd meds to people who actually have it the meds do not speed you up, they bring you down slow your brain down. Make you think logically vs emotionally. ADHD you have an extremely low tolerance for frustration and boredom snap out of nowhere, anxiety, chronic depression, you don’t stay at jobs long, you don’t do anything long, don’t have a social life because you’re so worried all the time about what they think, if they like you etc. disorganized, forgetful, overshare, talk too much to avoid silence, high heart rate, low blood pressure, mostly males have it, you get it from one of your parents, impulsive behaviors. I mean our brains are wired incorrectly, our brains dump dopamine replenishes it dumps it again also our norepinephrine is out of whack this is legit science. YOU DO NOT OUT GROW IT! You don’t have to take traditional stimulants there are tons of other things. But even if you take stimulants you only dose 8 hours out of the day, most of the time, also they advise time off from your stimulant. Which is great you don’t have withdrawal you feel just extremely hyper. But the stimulants level out your blood pressure and heart rate levels your entire mentality, behavior, I can go on and on. Here’s the problem mainstream medicine sees a problem they want to fix it. Well mental health you can’t cure but you can treat and use therapy. My psychiatrist used to be a neurosurgeon for 16 years, then went into psycho therapy and psychiatry. He educates you with an entire course before medicating. Long mental evaluation. Psychiatry vaguely touch adhd so if they don’t specialize or study it specifically too then here are these stigmas.

Being 23 now and learning more about what’s in the medicine, and how it makes me feel, certain habits I get from it, feelings, blankness. I don’t like that for myself. I will say, marijuana and micro dosing magic mushrooms, and expelling the “hyper ness” with executing it for my music, exercising, and even solves the emotional background of ADHD. I had really poor sleep patterns and taking stimulants for adhd actually helped, because I used to sleep during the day from being so unerstimulated. Then I couldn't sleep when I was supposed to.

    Far be it from me to argue with this chap, as he's obviously an expert in his field and a damn sight more intelligent than me... buuuuut people with ADHD taking stims don't (first few doses aside maybe) suffer with loss of sleep. All the meds do is normalise the brain function; ADHD is basically caused insufficient dopamine, or regulation thereof. It's a problem with executive functioning.
    The meds, within ADHD sufferers, bring that in to line. So yes, it is a stimulant but it doesn't affect ADHD brains as it would a non-ADHD brain. A non ADHD brain would have a surplus of dopamine, hence struggles with sleep. An ADHD brain is just stimulated gently into working better.
    I'm not very coherent here because I'm typing this whilst dealing with many interruptions, but source: I'm 34 years old and was recently diagnosed with severe ADHD (honestly at first I thought it was a load of nonsense) but I can confirm that my brain both works better now, and I actually benefit from far better sleep.
    Edit: I'm on a fairly high dose of lisdexamfetamine, so by now I'm well acquainted with stims. Quite frankly my life was, and would continue to be, a total chaos fuck without them.

      I wonder sometimes if I have ADHD. I can’t focus and I can’t sleep but I’m tired all the time. I can sleep anywhere for a nap. But I can’t sleep at night. I take naps during the day when I’m overwhelmed with what I have to do. I wake up every night at 4 or 2. Life is boring for me. I have analysis paralysis. I stopped brushing my teeth or fixing my hair because the repetitiveness of those activities is annoying. I do brush and fix my hair when it gets super gross tho. Showering is fine I enjoy how I can zone out and day dream in the shower. I begin to wash my body 10 to 15 mins later after I’ve gotten my fill of zoning out. There’s so much more. I do things last min, everything from homework to packing for moving days. (I’m not in school anymore) I do the tasks for my job last min, I’m scared they’ll fire me but I can’t help it. The tasks are extremely easy but I have no motivation to do them, then I stress all night about them and repeat the process again the next day. I am not sure if I have ADHD. I’m 35 and it feels like I can’t get my shit together.

I'm an adult who after looking at ADHD symptoms for my child began realizing that many of the things I've suffered with throughout my entire life fall plainly in the severe ADHD spectrum. Sometimes I guess it takes seeing it from a different perspective to realize it (when I realized that so many things I noticed in my child I also currently experience). The only thing is that I've developed a whole host of coping mechanisms ad-hoc throughout my life, but it is a daily struggled. The thought that my child might not have to go through the same things that I did is wonderful. But of course, I need to take care of myself as well. What's really wild is that genetics play into how much stimulants actually help with sleep deprivation. There is a SNP, rs4680 (a genetic switch) that spells out how fast the brain/body breaks down catecholamines like dopamine, adrenaline, and norepinephrine. People who have the fast version (val/val) get a HUGE boost from modafinil and amphetamine, whereas the slow catecholamine metabolism (met/met) people generally get a much lower response, some don't even respond to modafinil at all. There are studies that clearly show statistical significance here, but it's not very widely known at all - I suspect because if it was known, drug manufacturers would be potentially looking at less sales.

      Sodium Oxybate (Xyrem) is taken at night - on an empty stomach - right before bed and then again 3 hours later.
      Within about 15 minutes you are in a heavy, deep sleep.
      Xyrem increases slow wave sleep throughout the night so you wake up feeling extremely well rested. I've been on stimulants for about 12 years and once I started Xyrem I was able to reduce my adderall dose from 60mg per day down to 15mg.
      Instead of taking stimulants to increase my alertness, I'm addressing a root cause....poor sleep quality.
      Another benefit of Xyrem is that it will increase growth hormone secretion in your body. This melted fat off me for the first couple months and my weight dropped from 280lbs to 265lbs.

    I have sleep disordered adhd due to orthodontic treatment. It's complicated but I was born with a type 3 tongue tie; left untreated it affects how your face develops usually causing a recessed jaw that is typically treated with extractions and braces (orthodontic camouflage).
    This makes your mouth smaller, in my case the size of a ten year old child's, and means one's mouth is now too small for their tongue. This has resulted in my having sleep apnea and uars, adhd, and postural problems like forward head posture affecting breathing, walking, swimming and everything else and causes back, hip and joint pain. NEVER get extractions, orthodontists have no idea what they are doing, they're simply in it to create long term paying customers.

    A misconception that ADHD medication acts the same way as a stimulant on an ADHD brain vs a Neurotypical brain. Stimulants help me sleep in 3 ways,
    1: it enables me to get up earlier to start my day because it helps me figure out how to start my day, stay on one task until it is completed, and continue to begin and complete subsequent tasks (ie. helps me use my brain more for longer periods of time. )
    2: Because of point 1, I'm able to maintain a more consistent sleep schedule which helps me achieve better sleep hygiene.
    3: Because ADHD brains have issues with controlling thought, commonly at night our brains are constantly jumping from thought to thought without being able to silence it. This is commonly misdiagnosed as an anxiety disorder. The stimulant helps my brain remain on one thought for long periods of time, allowing it to calm down and "focus" on sleeping. (in fact, my first time taking medication I became extremely relaxed and began to sleep 2 hours after and woke up roughly 20 hours after taking the medication. )

    • @jonwindle8778
      @jonwindle8778 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did some reading when I first took it, the reason why I was tired (apparently) is that I had been sleep deprived for so long. Once I was getting adequate sleep I had to ensure that I took the medication early enough to not have any trouble sleeping. Adderal is different then Vyvanse as it is metabolically harder on your body even if it is Spansules.
      When it comes to what you described about "the next day". Your body is still running off of the fluctuations of hormones in your body. As the new day came, depending on the time and date, your body produced more "wake up" hormones as the sunlight began to rise. Additionally, it is super important to analyze your diet very closely, including your water consumption. I've noticed that for me personally if I don't have a breakfast that is high in fat, and dietary fiber before or when I take the medication I will have a harder time sleeping as the uptake and excretion of the medication is much sharper. This causes some of my physiology to resemble anxiety and a weird feeling at the end of the day. As the rapid loss of the medication makes it harder for my body to rebalance the hormones. This can sometimes cause me to fall asleep later then I intend.
      There is also a lot of information about magnesium that helps sleep, aswell as vitamin B complex supplements. However, I have yet to see how these affect me. But if you google there is a bit of info on it in some ADHD forums.

    I have posted before on the subject of glutathione. I take 2 - 4ml of liposomal glutathione (the food supplement is suspended in liposomes) in the morning and it greatly improves REM sleep the following night. This is the sleep that should come in the early morning along with imaginative dreams. Don’t buy the cheapest brand.

    I tried going off ADHD meds since I have been on them for years, only to realize why I am not like these people who take them to clean or cram homework. It keeps me from hyper focusing which I would abandon my family and life in a heartbeat if I was hyper focused on something that made more sense at the time than being married. It has a grounding effect which it does not do for people who don’t have ADHD. So they can’t understand. Drink caffeine or take an ice bath. Bruh, if I stop taking it, I could carve the statue of David and tune out the world.

    Stimulants make some people with ADHD fall sleep. They aren’t a stimulant for some ADHD patients, they are a sedative. I take my ADHD medicine to get to sleep at night.

    Who taking adderall doesn't know that if you take it after noon it will interfere with sleep? He said prescribed to take in the afternoon and evening. I don't think he has spoken to many people using Adderall for ADHD.

    Has anyone's vision improved after taking ADHD medication? Because your vision might be tied to your focus and so when you focus better you can 'see' better? I'm curious to know as this is a theory of mine. I have not been on meds but I suspect ADHD and wonder if my vision issues which I can't figure out by going to an optician are related.

    • @johnmoore1495
      @johnmoore1495 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kind of coincidental, when I started having severe focusing and motivation issues, my vision also got blurry almost instantly one day out of no where, and has stuck ever since. Prior to that day I had perfect vision. I literally told my mom, “if something weird happens I’m probably having a stroke, I’m seeing double right now out of nowhere.” Went to the highest rated eye doctor in my city because I was freaked out. And after an hour of testing and consultation they found nothing wrong besides saying I needed glasses.

    • @johnmoore1495
      @johnmoore1495 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Charlie-eq3dj no, I was supposed to have additional testing done, they tried to set me up with glasses but because I knew there’d be additional tests, I told them I’d wait. But this place was expensive and not covered under my insurance and at the time I didn’t have money so I put it off and just kind of got used to it. It hasn’t gotten worse but it definitely still interferes with reading and spotting objects when people point stuff out. What makes me think it’s not something wrong with the shape of my eye (why you normally need glasses) is because it changes. Some days can be really bad like that first day and some days it’s not really noticeable.

      @@johnmoore1495 Does you diet have anything to do with it? For example if you would eat fried food which is terrible for the brain, would you notice your vision change? Or have you ever done a few days only on juices or water and if you have, have you noticed a change?

    • @johnmoore1495
      @johnmoore1495 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Charlie-eq3dj in terms of vision I haven’t noticed anything with my diet affecting it. I’ve water fasted and one some keto, when doing those I feel way more mentally clear, but it doesn’t affect my vision.

    I am 25 and ADHD has been a controlling component in my life ever since I can remember. I fucking HATE it. My GERD and chronic gastritis make it impossible to keep pills down of really any kind so every day is a battle with being able to think properly. I feel like over the years my ADHD has molded into a form of Neurosis. If you don't think ADHD is real get a fucking clue and go do some research.
