I have spring water but was always depending on rain to water the garden. A couple years ago, I realized I needed to, not only water but, water the garden often!

For the past 5 years I’ve never really had to water much. I’m hoping this dry incredibly hot summer is just a fluke year and my next years of gardening won’t be so harsh.

I love your content. I think you are awesome from up here in Canada 🇨🇦 😀! You have been the main reason that i started 200 tomato varieties this year. Honestly, i really can't help but say thank you! P. S. The solution to your dry beds is 4" of quality clay in the bottom of your beds. Then a 5-10 % clay mix in your regular soil. Blue or grey clay works great 👍

P.P.S. I hope you get rain soon. Looking all around brown even on the lawn. Yikes!

Oh wow. What a beautiful compliment. It always makes me smile to know I influenced someone to grow all kinds of new tomatoes. I will be on the hunt for some clay then. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate your support and help very much so thank you.

I’m so behind in comments and I apologize for that but it is ending this weekend. I believe not in a good way though. Tomarrow we are to get flooding conditions. But at least it’s something so I’m still grateful.

Been dealing with the hellish heat and drought too in NC! I will say though all my dwarves are so tough n I'm for sure gonna grow even more dwarf varieties next year ! Definitely recommend the variety Rumplestilksin! It has been productive, resilient and tasty along with it being super pretty too.

I’m finding that too. They are practically the only ones in my garden still trying their darnedest to give me something.

You should get one of those sprinklers that go back and forth to water the big area. It works for me.

Thank you. That is definitely something I may consider or possibly drip irrigation if my summers continue this way.

Sorry your garden is struggling, friend. I’ve been in a funk too. It was 105+ degrees last week. Luckily, I have drip irrigation, but we’ve only had maybe 8 days since I planted my tomatoes with temps under 90°. Not much fruit set and the heat also delays ripening of the little bit of fruit I have. Several new insect pests popping up too. All we can do is try every year, hope Mother Nature cooperates and learn from what we encounter. Doing a rain dance for you!

    • @jencordial
      @jencordial  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

Wow 105 degrees. Even with drip irrigation I feel the water at those temps would evaporate immediately. This year has been quite the emotional one for me. I hope and pray next year is far better. ❤️😊

    Hi Jen,
I just wanted to let you know we are dealing with extreme record breaking heat here in the Mile High City of Denver, Co. Yesterday, the temps broke a record set back in the late 1870's at 103. Imagine that heat and being 1 mile closer to the sun.
It is already a challenge to grow here because of the altitude, cooler nights, short growing season, all combined with the arid conditions of the great plains. Having an extended heat wave that started with the 2nd hottest June on record, and a very hot heatwave in July, is kicking the physical butt of my garden and my emotional butt.
I remember in June, telling my husband the heat was a searing, almost a radiated heat that I didn't ever remember feeling before. It just penetrated the body and skin. It was overwhelming! I am a lot older that you and truly never felt heat that felt like that before when in the sun. I have lived in L.A. Calif., Las Vegas, NV., Chicago, Il, and Denver, Co. I know the feeling of different climates, altitudes, and humidity,. The way the sun/heat felt in June was nothing like I had ever felt before.
Last year, my tomato plants yielded over 300lbs as we had a very, VERY unusual rainy spring that lasted until the end of June. I was one happy gardener! Now, I am one massively depressed gardener. I have 24 tomato plants and only a couple are doing o.k. I have maybe 20 tomatoes growing for all of those plants, which for the most part, are the same types I planted last year. I do have a few other varieties that are also struggling.
I have had all of my beds covered in shade cloth, they are on a dripline, I have borage drawing in some bees, and I have even been out for 2 hours a day hand pollinating with an electric toothbrush. Nothing is working except the fact the plants are staying alive with the drip irrigation. IT SUCKS!
I wanted to cry when I saw your video because I could completely relate. I know the hard work you are talking about and the emotional toll it is taking to deal with something you can't control. I can't even watch most garden haul video's because I want to scream and cry, mostly because it feels so unfair.
To make matters worse, lets just say in the next two weeks after the heatwave the temps. drop and the tomatoes start producing, again, we will be praying that we don't get that first snow sometime in Sept. while whatever fruit we get is trying to size up and ripen (we will be really praying)!
I guess the good news is I planted every extra pepper plant I had because usually our yields usually suck and I thought maybe I would get a few extra peppers out of the deal. They are all doing o.k. as long as they are covered too. Our squash and cucumbers are dragging along, but I am hopeful they will produce decently. We are just now starting to see a few flowers on them. Maybe it will be a good squash and cucumber year. :)
That being said, I am fearful this will become more of a norm for gardeners, and while currently spotty in areas of our country, maybe not so much in the not to far off future. I will keep my fingers crossed for rain to roll your way, reviving your lovely garden(s)! We all know the hard work and love that has gone into your garden and appreciate all you do for us.
Anyhow, I just wanted you and anyone else that is having a rough growing season to know you are not alone.
    🥰Catherine

Catherine thank you so so much for this. You don’t know what it means to me to hear your plight. I completely understand what you mean about this years sun and heat feeling so different and draining. I’ve always been one that loves summer and its heat but I have found it so hard to be outside in June and July. It literally just sucks the life out of me.
I sure hope this is just a fluke year and I’m hopeful next year will be a turnaround year. This year was just failure after failure for me. I’m sorry it is that way for a lot of us gardeners this year.
Again thank you so much for pouring your heart out to me. I truly appreciated reading this. ❤️😊

get you some kaolin clay for the cucumber beetles. I used it this year for the first time and I actually am getting cucumbers. And only water with air warm water, never use cold water to water cucaburts

@@jencordial It has been Crazy... usually we only get about 2 weeks of high humidity... For a few days we have been having a break (aug 8th) . It was bad be out side and be dripping within 10 min like just run a marathon instead of pulling a handful of weeds long range is 24c ish (75f) feeling like 29(84f) so more normal temps nights long range is already showing dips below room temps...but hoping for a long fall to make up when nothing grew in the heat... got 2 mos left before got to start worry about frost I hope lol
