    I don't just like Natalie 's costume, I love it! ❤ As for any historically accurate fashion police, it's Faire and anything goes so they can go pound sand. I once burned the midnight oil and put together not only a Renaissance Faire dress for my self but also one for my daughter. My mom offered to take us right after we moved to AZ and I ran down to Walmart and got myself some fabric and found some cheap eyelite fabric fir my daughter. The idea was to go half dressed. Since I was on a deadline I ordered skirts for my husband and boys and hit the machines and in two days I pumped out two dresses and chemises. I was exhausted! But we looked good. There was no way my daughter's dress was historically accurate as it was baby pink eyelite and first $2/yard I couldn't pass it up since I knew she would outgrow it with in a couple years and for a dress that she would wear maybe three times, it was worth it. The only thing I wish I had at the time was an eyelite press, which I have now. It would have been a real time saver and I wouldn't have smashed my finger setting eyelites. Totally worth it! I wore my dress up until ye old plague hit. Ironically we went the weekend before everything went into lock down. Since we are hoping to go back next year I have plans for a Tudor style kirtle for myself. I also plan to crochet my own snood. 😉

      I am seriously considering getting an eyelet press, or at least better setting pliers than I have now! We exhausted our hands doing them, even Anna with her rock-climber grip strength.

      Seconding salomae, and I don't even sew. Have family ties with the trade through mom's side of the family though. I'm really tempted to sit her down and video what she remembers of Grandma Susan's time in it, especially in 1950s NYC. Hell, even her memories of NYC back then and take a day trip or ten to record where she grew up as it looks now.

    Did this years ago, one weekend and I made a Tudor(ish) dress for my 10yo daughter, a basic Tudor dress for myself and a T-tunic and simple trousers for my husband (simple Viking style) plus shifts for myself and my daughter and an underskirt/petticoat for my daughter. In weekend for a re-enactor event open to the public meaning the clothes actually had to look realistic even if not wealthy/noble class realistic and in period appropriate fabric. Did it as well using a blanket (my dress), several sheets (shifts, husbands T tunic and trousers) and an old plain curtain from a charity shop (daughter's dress) with the petticoat from a length of left over curtain fabric I had. Made with a hand sewing machine as this was before I had an electric one.

    Okay, it is fascinating how persistent Merge Gardens was with sponsoring the costuming and sewing community this week. I've seen 4 costubers' videos thus far and without fail each one had a Merge Gardens sponsor segment - and I haven't even yet seen the today's Nicole vid, so I suspect I have one more Merge Gardens ad read ahead.
    It's nice to see you all getting the support to make the incredible, informative and innovating work, but holly hell, this week is borderline earie XD Like a secret collab behind the scenes, just fascinating. Anyway, do get that bag, the eyelets and electricity for the machine won't pay for themselves!

    To answer the coffee question:
    Once you have "cream" (plant or not) & sugar in a "drink", to me, it's a liquid equivalent of "icecream"/a dessert. Especially when you have added seasoning, spice, and/or other flavors.

    • @SnappyDragon

      I usually have my tea with a "dollop" of milk, but when I add sugar, or syrup, and more milk, even that simple drink I think of as dessert. For many years I have been bemused at the caffeinated slushies and "soft serve icecream drinks" that Big Chain "coffee houses" serve.

    I did something like this as a teenager. I bought a book in the Village, I went to Stuyvesant High School, and bought a book of authentic historical patterns. Patterson Silks was nearby and my Indian grandmother brought over some fabrics from India.
    I also went to Chinatown to get some fabrics there.
    I sewed myself an Italian Renaissance dress for Halloween. It took me four days. It was a hit at the party.
    I sewed it by hand.

My sewing started out as a bit of a drunken zig-zag line but got steadily more even through the second leg, and almost looked good in the end.
    JUST YOU WAIT TILL I GET MY HANDS ON A SEWING MACHINE. I'm 53 and I dared to be a beginner, suck at it and just try! This is soooo much fun. Thanks, all of ye (by which I mean V, and also the commenters here who encouraged me into daring to try 😁🥰

    It turned out well and looks cute on Nathalie. The fabric shades suits her coloring and flatters her even more. Watching this have me some ideas for a Pirate Wench ench dress that is in my future once I kiss my wheelchair goodbye for good.
    As to accuracy police; its best to ignore them. They are insecure people who go after others to make themselves feel better. Its so much easier to go on the attack than to take the time to get one's self under control.
    It is literally impossible to do historically accurate these days. The breeds of animals and strains grown no longer exist. There is a reason for that; better quality replaced the originals over time. Then there is how the fabrics are made. Even if woven by hand, the fibers of today are superior to that of the past. Most are machine made these days which provides a standardized product. Cost is another thing to factor in the argument against historically accurate. Most normal mortals cannot afford the cost of natural fibers. 15 yards of wool at $85 a yard??? 15 yards of silk at $165 a yard???
    Folks forget the most important thing and that is to just have fun! When confronted with historical accuracy drama queens, I flat out tell them to go get a life and learn some basic manners and etiquette.

    One of the best pieces of advice I have been given is that when you are teaching a beginner sewist how to make a period shirt/shift, cut the underarm gusset in half on the diagonal. That way you can piece the sleeve together with one half of the gusset on each side, and lay it flat to seam on the the body. It really helps make the garment construction less "3D" and more "2D". You can literally lay every piece on the ground, unstitched, and say "Now sew it all together where the pieces are touching" and it will make sense with no further explanation.
    I did this for years in my own garb making and only started making shifts with a square gusset in the last few years when I mostly moved to handwork. I find square gussets simple enough when making them by hand, but really fiddly by machine. If I needed a quick and dirty shift in a hurry now, I would go back to using two triangles because it is so much easier and faster when sewing by machine.

    Natalie your dress is gorgeous! I LOVE the colors and the damask!❤️ Many thanks to Natalie and Vi also for publicly letting people know that it's ok to try different ways of doing things (even if it doesn't work!) and showing how to let out a pattern or easily add to it. The very fact that women are not all made like paper patterns are what makes us unique and beautiful! I didn't understand that when I was Natalie's age and the adults around me reinforced my thinking! (Early 1970s 😢) I look at my old pictures now and wonder why I thought something was wrong with me! Natalie's huge smiles as she showed off her new creation is reward in itself. Enjoy, Natalie!😊

    • @SnappyDragon
      @SnappyDragon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We got really lucky with the kirtle pattern-- right proportions, although it turned out with more ease than we really needed. The shirt pattern we drafted ourselves according to Natalie's measurements.

    • @nancyholcombe8030
      @nancyholcombe8030 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SnappyDragon when I was her age I weighed 117lbs on a 5'3" body. But my bras were DDs so I had one size top and one size bottom pattern wise! My first sewing teacher wanted all of us to make a dress. Skirt and top were not allowed. I wish I'd had an instructor like you that could've shown me how to cut a pattern to my measurements! Instead, she made me buy two patterns of the same dress and tried to fit them together, with disastrous results (and a lot of giggling classmates!) that made me quit sewing until I was an adult. It also made me think badly of my body until adulthood. As I said, the smile on Natalie's face says it all! This is how you teach that sewing can be fun but can also be done!

    If you can't source synthetic whale bone, the heavy zip ties(cable ties) work really well for boning. (Source my wife who requires a lot of front support).

    • @SnappyDragon
      @SnappyDragon  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those can work really well for some people! Natalie has found they don't give her as much support as she'd like, so we probably would have needed to fully bone the kirtle with them rather than a few strategically placed pieces of steel.

    I don't think i've ever managed to complete a project in just a weekend, but i managed to spin four ounces of wool into yarn with just a piece of dowel with a screw hook (not even a whorl so i couldn't use it as a drop spindle, i was rolling it on my leg or twirling it in one hand the whole time) in just a week. The power was out for three days and it was winter so we were all huddled up in the living room and i desperately needed something to keep me busy. My wrist and back hurt so bad by the time i was done and i was still new to spinning at the time so it was full of knots, but it was something like 425 yards of malabrigo solis hand dyed merino i got from a local shop and i made it myself

    I am not following what you did to add bust space in the kirtle. Or was it not the kirtle that got the gusset? I took some screen grabs of your screen drawing but I’m on a phone and it just can’t get it big enough to make sense. I looked on Patreon but at least at the level I am at I don’t see any thing more. Do I need a different level?

    • @SnappyDragon
      @SnappyDragon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shirt has square underarm gussets, and we added side gores that start in the underarm so there would be more chest space without broadening the shoulders. The pattern diagram is scanned and attached to the Works Sighted, which is the Ginger Chai tier on Patreon. But you can find similar diagrams elsewhere!

    I mean, this comes over and over again in your videos... What would sewists from the past do if they had access to modern machinery and methods to assemble garments? Would they say "No thanks" or will they embrace the time saving technology? Not implying all of them would use the sewing machine, but a lot would consider the option, specifically if the most important is a finished garment versus top quality. To me, it relates to couture and every day wear. I would expect the time saving methods used for the later, and some part of hand sewing or embelishment of one sort for the other. The most important is not the method, but in the end the value you want to add to it. You can have used a entry price sewing machine and cheap material but it means the moon to you because you took the time to make it.

    I have a small tip for every begginer that is struggling to keep seam allowances consistent. Just use those seam allowance magnets, you stick them to the machine plate and you don't have to check if you're doing it straight. Someone (I'm sorry, can't remember who) did a video debunking the myth that they are doing harm to the machines, they are too weak.
    And, I mean, it's Ren Faire costume, they are not reenactments, so historical accuracy police can go and check their own wardrobe. If they didn't grow the flax for linen, what are they doing?! 😂

    • @SnappyDragon
      @SnappyDragon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love those magnets so much! And for really little seam allowances, I have lines drawn on clear tape on my straight-stitch foot.

    • @Noel.Chmielowiec
      @Noel.Chmielowiec ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great idea! I try not to use tiny seam allowances, because I'm not that experienced yet, but it could be really useful for topstitching!

    • @SnappyDragon
      @SnappyDragon  ปีที่แล้ว

      I started doing it when making corsets, so I could sew the boning channels by measurement rather than with a narrow zipper foot and a piece of boning.

    • @Noel.Chmielowiec
      @Noel.Chmielowiec ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SnappyDragon That's clever! It seems way quicker than marking on fabric, especially when you're doing something like cording or some heavily boned garment, you wouldn't waste half of a day marking lines. I'm writing it down so I wouldn't forget.
