Motörhead in 1982 was the loudest gig I have ever been to,had to get behind the pillar on the floor ,my ears were nearly bleeding. Awesome!
Fantastic
I saw them in 91-92(ish at the Horden not Selinas), but agree, was the loudest gig ever. Weird vibe too - punks and metal-heads eyeing each other off feeling like something could break out at any minute but never did.
Lined up on the eve of my 18th birthday in 1981 to see the Sunny Boys, one of my all time favourite live acts. The door guy almost didn’t let me in as the clock hadn’t ticked over but did eventually get in and had the greatest night. Went on to see countless bands over the years. Fantastic venue never to be replaced.
Fantastic
A reformed MC5, called DKT MC5, a celebration of the music of the MC5, 3 original members with Dennis Tek on guitar, Mark Arm from Mudhoney on vocals and Evan Dando of the Lemonheads also on vocals, 2004
I was there!
Thank you this is so good. Saw some awesome bands and even the support for the International acts were mind blowing.
Some of my favourite Aussie acts I saw there were Hoodoo Gurus, Spy V Spy, The Johnnys, H &C, The Oils, Boom Crash Opera, The Divinyls and lots of beers and somehow got into a fight in the men's toilets during TISM haha.
Some dickhead was off his head hassling me while I was doing a piss and wouldn't shut up and leave me alone so I ended up snotting him in the face before he did the same to me
Back to the gig and had to tell my mates what happened to laughs all round
What was worse was spending all your money on beers and a kebab and me having to walk up the hill in Arden Street and up Broome Street to my home in Maroubra.
Great times and what a venue.
I was part of the Sydney metal scene in the 80s- 90s, I guarantee we once knew each other and have mutual friends.
Its a rainy day, and im going to binge watch your channel, so expect a few comment notifications, because ive had a mad life and ive got some stories
👏👏👏 lol cheers 🍻
I attended many epic gigs at the legendary Selinas Coogee Bay Hotel, The Choir Boys, Spy v Spy, The Angels, Midnight Oil, The Hoodu Gurus and some great support acts as well.
Great venue, although it could get rough at times.
My fave venue of all time 💥
Spy v spy always good. Hooliganism
I was at the James Brown concert. Amazing.
Very cool!
I was lucky enough to play at Selinas a couple of times in the early 1990s. One of those nights will forever live in my memory as the wildest gig of my short, disappointing musical career 🙂 Such an epic venue.
Great memory for u for 👍
Yeah travelled from the northern beaches to Selina’s a few times back in the day and saw some incredible bands✌️❤️
Fantastic video. I used to go to Selina's to see bands between 1982 and. 1992. There were so many great live music venues in pubs around Sydney back then.
Glad you enjoyed it 👌🙏😊
Needless to say many many great at played at Selina's. I saw Nirvana there for the third time on that tour, and got one of my ribs broken in the crush! That was a good show!. I saw The Cult there when they reformed, a really great Hoodoo Gurus gig where the power cut out during the peak bit of Miss Freelove, felt like someone had thrown a bucket of cold water over us. Many many other gigs that I have sadly forgotten. I remember that the wonderful beer garden that they have there now was just an empty gravel yard during those times.
Another great video, Gioia, you are doing us a great service, bringing back these memories
Thanks for another great video. I saw The Tea Party, TISM, Regurgitator, Andy Prieboy, Dinosaur Junior etc. at Selinas in the 90's. Word is that the Selinas site will become, you guessed it, upmarket apartments. You can't have Aussie pub rock without Aussie pubs where you can play rock!
PiL with john Lyndon is 1 that sticks in my memory
Ha ha. I was in the VIP that night, with some friends, sitting straight above him. The crowd was calling for Sex Pistols all night, and John kept saying "We're NOT the Sex Pistols".
Then they played RISE and everyone got into them.
They had just finished and my mate leaned over and yelled "Play some fucking Pistols John" as a joke.
I swear. It broke John. He looked up crestfallen, tears welled in his eyes. I saw him cry. He walked off stage and up the stairs, then stopped at the top to look back over us. It looked like he was still upset.
The bass player in our band, thundabox, penned a song "The Man Who Made John Lydon Cry".
Hilarious.
1983?
I saw them at the Ballina RSL that year….😂
That would have been good
I saw Suicidals in the mid ‘90’s, great times
Far out flashback
Got to see Soulfly there ,still the loudest gig
They came out painted head to toe cammo paint -with mad dreads and soo much mad ball energy ..parts of me still rocking to it ..
Thanks Selina’s for rocking the best bands
And fuck yeh Soulfly ..ballsiest night ever
Love what you’re doing with all these videos, they’re deeply important to many of us, and for our culture. These venues/ buildings hold some kind of magic inside the walls from what went on inside them over the years. I only got to see The Butthole Surfers and Mr Bungle at Selina’s because I lived so far out West. Crazy cool gigs!! But my god, the list of performers you’ve mentioned here boggles the mind. I was only aware of less than a quarter of what you’ve mentioned. Keep up with this great important work. Much love.
Lived on the corner of Carr and Arden mid 80's, saw many bands at Selina's, the Damned being one of my highlights., was up on the mezzanine floor and followed some VIP's into the hob nob area like I was with them 😂, great night.
Awesome 👌
Selina's was great. Guru's, Lime Spiders, Sonic Youth, Primus, Mr Bungle, Spy V Spy, Midnight Oil...they are the ones I can remember. Great nights.
Saw Primus. Very mosh conducive
Saw Ween, Beastie Boys, Danzig, Rollins Band, Ice Cube, Fu Schnickens with Shaq all at Selinas. love it.
Thank you! From Melbourne, I remember staying at Celina's in 1984 as part of "Sydney Surf Sunset Club" w/e getaways.A number of beach hotels participated in Bronte and Bondi Junction Hotel etc.Good memories Please not more apartments for the higher income earners and investors.Have it listed as a heritage site and protected
Such a shame isn't it
I remember the seeong Sonic Youth there in the early 90s and I went with my dad to see Def Leppard, that would have been around 1983
One night we watched the Ramones there. We even booked rooms there, because it was terrible to get home from there in Coogee.
So anyway, the poor Ramones didn't get their drinks rider that night. Because some silly staff member left out all out in the hallway.
Well we couldn't let those drinks get warm...
Ahhh great story!!!
Danzig in 93 the sweat was dripping from the roof. My mate copped a broken bloody nose. We used to drink on the beach beforehand then head on in pissed
Soundgarden at selinas. you lucky thing. Far out !! I can only remember Tea Party there
One of my top 3 gigs ever. They were sensational
I saw Tea Party Friday night at The Enmore 😆
@@Gioia67 How were they, still kickin' it? I love the Doc print on your wall too mate. Im reading his biography as we speak. x
Saw hundreds of bands at Selinas...
Ohhh you did not
I was at the oils gig around 93 I think. Just an amazing time. I particularly remember how good the mix was. Great sound engineer
wow, went there from around 1972 to 1980, saw Air Supply at their peak, Ian Moss, Richard Clapton, and so many more. It was always between the Back of the Moon and Bondi Lifesavers.. Many crazy wild days.))))))))
Back of the Moon club at Oceanic Hotel up the road. That was a fun place.
Great video. I used to lived up the road from Coogee Bay Hotel in Kurrawa Ave back in 93 til late 97 and saw few bands there Danzig, Fear Factory, Bolt Thrower. Last time I went to Selina's I saw Cradle of Flith back in Dec 97. Bodies we're flying everywhere in the mosh pit, it was beautiful. Great times and memories. Cheers.
Bolt thrower would’ve been sick. I lived in that huge house right on the corner looking down at the Spot as you walk past the cinema. Was a share house and was going to Randwick boys at the time
@@Aussie100-hj2jm Is that on St Paul Street near Perouse Rd? Bolt Thrower gig was one of the best live gig I've been too, even though I injured my left leg at the time when I was stage diving (pain and pleasure do go hand to hand) but bloody worth it. Sadly now I've retired going to gigs since it's not the same anymore and yet I'm an "old" fart at 49. I used to go to Maroubra High on ANZAC Parade, Maroubra Junction. Sure you know where that is. Failed education miserable. 😒
@@TheDoleBludgerBogan yeah same 49
I keep an open mind but they don’t have bands like Boltthrower anymore
It’s cringe as are all the goons holding up their mobile phones to record in the “pit”
It’s bizzaro world.
Primal Scream - Screamadelica 92' was a blast!
What a gig! I saw Primal Scream at the Big Day Out 1995 during their Southern Rock phase. Bobby Gillespie was thoroughly trashed but it was an awesome show. The Cult headlined BDO that year and crushed it. Saw Nirvana headline the first BDO in 1992, also amazing and a crazy mosh pit. Ok, I'll go now lol.
Played there in the late 1980's saw many bands, Buzzcocks , Robert Cray, Bad Brains, Hoodoo Gurus, (Rob Halford's) Fight, Candy Harlots , Cheap Trick . Many support bands that were fantastic. Lived in Clovelly quick cab ride away.
Down Under by Men At Work was filmed partly in a stripped bare room, as part of the Selina's renovation, which is now the upstairs VIP section for the band and invited guests.
Didn't know that Cool!
the old place had a brilliant dance floor that was raised and under lit. a vit like the old Saturday Night Fever floor.. many booths around the perimeter to watch bands etc..
I was a visiting Pom. I'm not proud of it, but I saw a late incarnation of The Bay City Rollers here in about 1986. Turned up just to have a drink in the front bar, but when I found out The Rollers were gigging that evening in the Selinas section, couldn't resist it. Turned out they could rock pretty well. The support band drummer from a local Aussie band had to stand in as the original drummer had passed out due to excessive alcohol consumption. A good gig! I remember it to this day.
Having lived in Coogee from the late 80s to the late 90s I pretty much lived at Selinas. I had been lucky to see so many great great bands (Oils, Nivana, Jimmy, WPA, H&C, TISM, etc) but the best I saw was a support act.
They were 'Fishbone' in the early 90's , they supported 'The Violent Femmes' and absolutely blew them off the stage. I've seen hundreds of bands over the years a yet to see another band like that one.
Wow that’s interesting 👌👍
2:33sec DEE MINOR FOR AUSTRALIA Woo hoo!!
Only went there twice. For Good Vibrations A Concert For Marc Hunter and a Triple M gig featuring the Radiators.
Still have my ticket, t shirt, cd and vhs tape from the Marc Hunter concert.
Great place had a ball playing there. I was the Drummer with Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Now I Live in Sydney. Artist
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
Played with
Sonic Youth
Date
February 5, 1993
I forgot about that band ! Sick.
The rapper was like a chuck d impersonator but huge at the time
I think Soundgarden and Primus are the only bands I saw play. Both iconic gigs though, as both bands were on the cusp of big things
On different nights, remember seeing XL Capris, Russell Morris, and very early Divinyls, which would have been '81.....who were actually supporting Matt Finish....what a show that was.
Wow How lucky to see these bands during that year ✌️👌👏😍
I seen Ministry there in 95 .loudest and most packed show I'd ever witnessed. Feet barely touching the ground.
Saw lots of gigs there, but The Pogues was definitely the highlight. Shane was drinking Baileys from milk shake cups, crowd was the most inebriated I’ve ever seen…but wild and happy collective drunkenness. Total blast!
Also Screaming J, Sonic Youth, The Cult
Saw DIG and Skunkhour here on a Mushroom magicked evening!!!
I was fortunate to play at Selina's with a couple bands in the late 80's though to the mid to late 90's .Was definitely one of my favorite venues.
Definitely my favourite venue 👍👍
Yeah great memories at Selinas. Used to catch the ferry over from Manly drinking a carton of VB throw downs up on the bow then a cab to Coogee with my mates. Mid 80's gigs with highlight being James Brown. I remember he wore a purple velvet 3 piece suit and just lit up the stage with his moves. Plenty of H&C gigs with Do Re Mi. Also a memorable gig with Jenny Morris late 80's who had a 'smoke free' gig. When someone lit up she stopped the show with the full support of the crowd the offender was quickly escorted outside. Epic venue.
Kate Ceberano had the same policy reminder Cheers Thanks for the support
My band at the time VICE played Selina's back in 1985, at the 1st national heavy rock concert on the Easter weekend. Melbourne's Bengal Tigers were also in the bill. I still have a copy of the promotional flyer.
Ramones, Ministry, Soundgarden, Faith no more, Nirvana…Saw them all there
The hole bassist left midset after the shoe incident. The band continued as a 3 piece i remember with Courtney just going off. The Jeff Buckley gig 95 was memorable too.
I saw numerous bands at Selina’s in the 1980’s. Too many to name all but the usual Barnsey, Mentals Rose Tattoo, Swanee etc. I remember seeing George Thorogood and the Destroyers as well. My ears were ringing for a week afterwards. God he was loud 👍 I used to drive down from Beecroft and sleep in the car afterwards. Normally it was opposite the venue at the then beach carpark.
A band who I thought I would never see here in Auss, was 10CC. They did a pitstop gig back in 83 at Selinas. It was the only show they did in Auss that year. Great show !!!!
Cool 👍👍👏🏼👏🏼
It was the other side of town for me at the time, but went there to see The Cramps, memorable show, still remember Lux Interior deep throating the microphone.
I seen Hole in 95’, Courtney Love jumped off a Marshall stack into the crowd, she made it back on stage minus a shoe, someone in the crowd threw it back on stage, it hit the bassist in the face, bloodying it and the show was cancelled, what a gig
Cool yeh I mention that How funny 🤣
I saw Bad Religion and SNFU play there, i think 97, then we walked to central station from Coogee Bay to catch a train back to Newcastle, it was a long but great night. It's sad that alot of these iconic music venues are disappearing.
Very long night lol
Lovely memories - thanks! Saw quite a few gigs at this amazing venue. Did I imagine the sticky floor - I don't think so! As well as the usual wonderful local suspects like The Angels, Oils, Spy v Spy, Choir Boys etc...I also recall seeing Martha and the Motels for a slightly more mellow? experience which I don't think you listed! Thanks heaps for this!
Glad you enjoyed it🙏👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
back in the late 70;s I would be there on the odd Friday night or 2
So many great nights , some of my fav gigs at Selina's were Ministry, Sex Pistols, Soundgarden, Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, Fear Factory with Shihad [pre Pacifier] just to name a few!
The best venue in Sydney imo 👏🏼
OMG I am having flashbacks!!!!!
Relive the moment :-)
Congrats on getting to 1000 subs . Another great video !!
Thank you 🙏
Seen ice cube there and then me and mate got locked up first taste of the law great times
Really enjoyed this piece. I have to say I was having trouble focusing as you are so beautiful. Seriously, you are captivating. I was disappointed to notice your wedding ring. Okay, enough creepiness from me. Keep up the great work!
🤣🤣
Yeah I remember going there regularly in 1976 it was Selinas Discoteque there was a flashy dance floor (like Sat Nite Fever floor ) and we boogied to all the songs of the time. One of the big big hits was Andrea true Connection - More more more and Party Line. would dance all night and go home with a leg cramp Ha ! Loads of other pub bands thereafter ofcourse. The 80s was the peak with bands. In the early 90s I saw Crowded house which was great. Fun fact - my dad was a jazz muso + back in the early 60s there was the Aust Jazz Convention held in the beer garden at CBH. got many old pix of this which Dad took. its been a good music venue a long time. Also my aunt and uncle had there honeymoon here in Nov 1946. So much history & such a great spot.
Rollins , was young , my first proper gig. Was getting squashed and bill weiss was whacking my arms cause I was clinging onto the feedback monitor,so I got up to escape.
For 1 second before I launched myself as far back over the crowd, that sweaty iconic Rollins pose is etched into my retina and I can’t remember 💩 normally
Saw other gigs but that was a good first one.
I was at that Nirvana gig.
Wow!!
@@Gioia67 Lots of adventures that night.
Me and my friends used to go there all the time to see bands during the nineties, the best place in Sydney at the time.
Agree🤩
One of my earliest memories of Selina's was seeing MIDNIGHT OIL play. We used to head out in two or three cars full of lads from the Western suburbs and l was always the youngest . Often times l was not 18 yet , so l'm talking 1978/79 . l was legal by September 79. This one night we went to Selina's l remember walking in and finding the floor front of stage filled with Surfies who were all sitting on the ground. The stage was to the right at this time , if l remember correctly. Anyway after a little while the MODELS came on stage and bravely played a few of their edgy new wave songs and l was loving it but the Surfies just sat on the floor and started booing and chanting OILS OILS OILS . I tried to shoosh them but to no avail and the Models just did their set and walked off. l was pissed off because l really liked the MODELS sound.
Love it ! I remember seeing the Models and absolutely loving them😀
I moved to Sydney in 92, and the first gig I went to there was L7. I had people trying to pick fights with me before I entered, due to being with some female friends, and once inside, I realised there was about double the occupancy as to what I would expect from a club that size back home. After a couple more gigs, I decided that gigs in the city or the North Shore were definitely more my vibe.
God. Trying to get a cab back to Surry Hills after a show was a nightmare.
Me and 2 mates worked with the night managers girlfriend 89-91 and we got VIP to anything we wanted. They were stickers.
We were naughty and used to use 2 of the 3 stickers to sneak all our friends in blocking off the views of the rich and famous.
Of all the bands PIL, Buzzcocks, Foo Fighters, Cramps,...., the wildest crowd i ever saw was Transvision Vamp. Crazy!
(Ps. Can you do a video on the Phoenician Club please?)
Enjoyed the content , too many memories to list , we use to drive over early on the days of big shows from Bondi and by our tickets so we knew we were in , walking back home to Bondi was the only way quite often as cabs were like gold after the gigs, the clash poster on the wall was a bit odd as they never played there , only the capitol in 82 ,
Thanks for the support 🙏👏🏼😊
One night we were drinking out the beer garden waiting to go in to see Simple Minds and a limousine pulled up and Robert Plant and about 4 of his mates jumped out. This would have been 84. Awesome venue.
Cool Whst a great story! 👏🏼👌
@@Gioia67 awesome content you have. Brings back memories. 👌🙏
Can you check out a pub in Melbourne called the Aberdeen hotel in north Fitzroy. Saw some iconic bands before they made it.
Also the Golden Gate hotel South Melbourne and the Red Eagle in port Melbourne.
70-90s.
Love the content
Great video, Gioia. Would love you to do a show on Bananas in St. Kilda. My favourite venue, Saw Rose Tattoo threre several times, met the band and had some great chats with Angry both pre and post gigs. I used to roadie and one night I did the lights for about 15 minutes for 'Stars' while their lighting guy went and got a beer :)
Definitely will! I’m doing the Espy at St Kilda next actually Cheers 🥂
. I seen the Ramones, James Brown, Cheap Trick, Party Boys with Joe Walsh, Madness, Angels, Mid Night Oil, Cold Chisel. Ramones & James Brown are still two of the best live acts I've seen anywhere anytime 37 years later, The Ramones were everything thing you'd expect for a die hard Ramones fan. I've never seen anyone anywhere, work a crowd like JB. Danny Ray (JB's MC for 30 years) did the whole JB breaking down on stage routine where Danny Ray comes out with cape to help JB reluctantly off stage, then at the last second comes back on. You ain't seen nothin until you heard the entire crowd geed up by Danny Ray calling out James Brown, James Brown, James Brown.
Saw kiwi/Aust band mother goose with all the antics..and boy were they loud..😮
I saw Cradle of Filth taking to the stage well after midnight in '97, featuring their classic lineup. Around the same time, I also caught performances by the Rollins Band and You Am I. Fishbone in '96 was a definite highlight. Mr Bungle in 2000 left us hanging for over an hour post-Neil Hamburger's set, which had everyone in stitches or agony, especially with his classic about Anthony Kiedis and a junkie. Primus in '98 stands out too, particularly when Les Claypool mentioned it was the fastest rendition of "Is It Luck?" they had ever done. A few other concerts come to mind, Screaming Jets, Grinspoon etc but these are the ones that stand out the most.
Thanks for the feedback...a few people have mentioned Fishbone actually and Mr Bungle. Rollins footage looks hectic lol
@@Gioia67 Rollins was excellent. He spoke about Stuart Diver, the fella trapped under rubble in the Thredbo landslide disaster. I actually got to experience crowd-surfing at that gig, which was a memorable moment. However, the Bungle gig didn't go as smoothly. We were barred from re-entering the venue when we stepped outside for some fresh air about an hour into the set. The place was incredibly packed, and unfortunately, the security at that time was very aggressive; I witnessed them forcibly removing a woman by dragging her out on the ground by her arms. It was unsettling.
Yep, went there lots when living in Sydney. I def remember Midnight Oil (twice) INXS twice, Simple Minds, and numerous others who slip the memory.
Horrific to hear it might be turned into luxury appartments. The curse of gentrification continues at the expense of iconic venues and pubs. In my home city of Brighton it's an ongoing battle against developers. Or new appartments are built near a venue then new residents complaining of noise, is a favourite.
I feel that the community will win and hopefully it will stay as it is Best venue in town 💥👌
Yes it's called Nimbyism
National trust situation, not unlike the Esplanade Hotel (St Kilda Melb). It holds history and memories that far exceed greed.
I really hope this Music venue survives it would be such a shame to bulldoze down so much music history to make way for some cheaply made apartments that probably will fall apart in a couple of years.
Great video on this iconic place probably my favourite one of yours
I hope so too
I seen ministry there fuckin awesome ,Dave Lombardo on drums it was insane
Come on, you don't clearly remember *anything* at Selinas!
This video has brought back many fond but hazy, drunken memories :D
🤣🤣yeh many people’s memories are hazy and dusty 🥂
Much of this time span I lived in Tamarama and would walk to Coodgee which was easy enough , walking back, not so much, and I crashed in waverley cemetery I guess half a dozen times , one time I awoke and there are D's every where , turned out Gerry Adams , the leader of Sinn Fein, [ political arm of the IRA] was on a junket and Waverley cemertary is a historically significant Catholic thing.. Phew thought I was in trouble for a minute.
Haha great story ! Thanks for the feedback 🤪
The Stardust at Cabra had Top Aussie Bands 7 nights a week for years ,In my opinion the Gambling ,poker machines stuffed up the Sydney Pub Venue Music scene
Agree👍👍
Ahh dirty sticky floors that smelt like beer & piss, Had many furious nights there.
I saw Mr Bungle, Cypress Hill and Steve Vai there..
Nice. Yes we met Steve Vai out the back car park 👌😀
I reckon Mike Patton was Fantastic @@Gioia67
Brill
Mark of Cain & Rollins Band.
Bands I saw at Selinas that were not mentioned are the following,
Fight (Rob Halford of Judas Priest solo project) Machine Head on their Burn My Eyes tour and Suicidal Tendencies in 1995
Suicidal tendencies? Wow I saw them at the Horder. cheers
is there some where there are pics of gigs at the CBH
Only the website or if u buy photographers books where there might be a couple here and there Tony Mott and Bob King for instance
Spent many nights at selinas.
Please comment and correct if I am wrong: The Cockroaches used Selinas to shoot their music video, I think the song was "Wait Up"...does anyone know about the video shoot?
No idea sorry 🤷♀️
If only I could go back in time to see Radiohead on the Pablo Honey tour.....who knew what they would then become !
Wow!!
Around 88 oils played there seemed about once a month . A lot of music videos made there lime spiders volitile noiseworks can’t remember which song saw the damed played there angels and shit loads more was a good night club next door open late not to busy
It's still open

Pokies happened to Aussie rock
Drank in the pub for 25 years and spent a lot of nights in Selina’s . Saw some great international bands but more importantly a lot of brilliant and not so brilliant Aus bands . Stopped drinking there when Page sold the place , the new owners destroyed the pub atmosphere by trying to be to trendy.
Yes Today I hear it's being knocked down Sydney has zero idea
The Selina's site will soon be a block of flats. No respect.
Agree 😪😪
Terry Page's Selina's...saw some great bands there Angels, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel,Swanee...I left Sydney in 1982 ...only thing I missed were the music venues.otherwise it's a hole😂
saw machine head, biohazard and cradle of filth there in the 90's
What happened was Kurt was really wasted 🤨
Yes. there are lots of stories about that
