Sunbury - Australia's Greatest Rock Festival. A peek inside the book by Peter Evans.
This book explores the history of the Sunbury rock festivals, which were staged over the Australia Day long weekends of 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1975.
The festivals, the bands, promoters, officials, and local police. The drugs, the sex, the nudity, the long hair, the mud, the rain, the sunburn, the punters, young and old. Freedom. Fashion. Fantastic fun.
Peter Evans is the author. The comments are pretty interesting, including people from Jands and the costs involved. The bands are plentiful - best to buy the book. Queen. Deep Purple. Billy Thorpe. Johnny O'Keefe and many more. Just brilliant.
Stories like Queen having a problem with the Sunbury road crews, and Michael Chugg shouting into a microphone, “Go home you Pommie wankers”, a chant taken up by the crowd!. The photos and stories are a real treat.
I've tried to credit what/where I could.
Enjoy. 😎

Hi Gioia, can relate to this one. I went to both Sunbury 73 and 75. Sunbury 73 was regarded as the best of the four. We travelled down from Sydney, 5 of my school mates in a 62 Holden EK sedan bought for just $300, all of us just 16 or 17. Great music, great vibes we had the time of our lives, stories too numerous to tell. Billy Thorpe was the king of Sunbury but there were great performances from Pirana, Madder Lake, Sid Rumpo, Carson and Greg Quill and Country Radio and many others. To some extent bad weather ruined Sunbury 75 but there was still some great music. I've had the book for sometime and yes I am in the picture featured at 13.30. Another great vlog Gioia, absolutely love your work.

Just having a laugh alwaysright. I kind of agree with you about some of the acts that played at Big Day Outs in comparison with who played Sunbury but that's to do with personal taste looking back over the decades - rather than what this book is about. I liked a lot of Australian stuff from the 1960s but kind of skip the early 70s (the Sunbury era I guess) until bands got exciting again in the late 70s (that to me was the era that Radio Birdman and the Saints ushered in). And there's been great stuff from that era until today. I really like music history so this type of thing is interesting to me.

Call me biased. That issue captured one of the peaks of rock music Eg. were there ever, any other single issues of a rock magazine with two articles on the greatest band of all time - when they were at their peak? Robert Plant, more bluntly than ever - saying he thought the band were SO much better than anyone else that he couldn’t even think of who might be close! Wtf!? So many, many bands and venues for so many years all experienced in various stages of altered consciousness. Simply can't remember them all but the On The Street paper fills in a lot of those gaps. Great stuff. Love your dedication towards exploring back into that street culture that was full on. My favoured period was 77 through to around 83 when it was very new in the beginning, raw, experimental and vastly different to what had come before. Got commercialised later and the ability for convention to eventually control it slowed the whole revolutionary process down to a standstill. Happy New Year 🎈🎆🕯
