Technical interest has for a long while been unusual among PoC, but lately that's changing. Black techs in particular seem to be drawn to robotics. I had a six week long running discussion, a forthright, frank, and earnest discussion, with my black boss about actuating an end effector for a pick and place arm. He disagreed that I could do the job with pneumatics, which I was determined to do because the components are cheap and compressed air readily available in any manufacturing environment. He also had his doubts about my true motivation, once saying to me, "You're like those steam engine guys, gonna save the world with steam power. Nicest guys you'd ever want to meet and they're all crackpots." In the end, I proved he was right. Out went my air cylinders, in came his stepper motors and linear actuators. In thirty years of engineering, I think I met maybe five black engineers, one of them a woman and one of them the only black boss I ever had. He was good, and she was good, but the other three, not so much. That's about the same good-to-bad ratio as white engineers. But the point is, blacks are 13% of the population and maybe 0.05% of the techs. Western Civ is a technological culture at root. To succeed, speaking in general terms for those without much athletic talent or abilities valued by the entertainment industry, PoC's gotta step up. This calls for a massive cultural paradigm shift and you know what? I think it is underway.

My uncle used an old Kenmore washing machine motor to make a winch that pulled my mother's wheelchair up the stairs along tracks he specially created for her since she was an invalid. Worked super well and served us for 15 years until she passed away.
As the world economy gets closer and closer to collapsing, we are going to see more and more people reusing parts that used to go into landfills. This guy is a genius at re=purposing parts. I'd love to see a TV or internet series with him and his inventions. Perhaps some manufacturing company would appreciate his creative thinking.

A woman who broke the IQ record was taking things apart with her dad's tools when her parents left her alone as a kid. You can imagine: Jen, where's the dishwasher? I took it apart mom and you'd be surprised how simple it is inside but they could have made the rinse cycle more efficient.

Whipped his but and told him to put it back together and it better work. He did and it did. He learned a valuable lesson. Became a great engineer with no sense of entitlement.
You are not only an inventive Maker, but your video is done really well with no down-time filler. You should caution your viewers about the dangers of an un-enclosed motor with possible exposure to live parts.

In the early 1980s I made an old hand meat grinder powered by using a washing machine motor. We lived on a lot of venison back in those days and the old hand cranks wore you out. The motor had a start winding contactor that was worn out so I just put a push button switch ( the lid safety switch from the washer ) in place of the start contacts and mounted it externally, and then just pushed the button to get it started.
also the washers with a steel drum inside the steel drum with all the little holes all around it makes the best fire pit I've ever had and it looks really cool when the air coming through the holes ignites and burns like no other
I use the plastic ones for catch basins for downspouts and such. Dig a hole insert tub. you can make a concrete cover to run the downspout into. I don't have pipe so I made a funnel shaped concrete cover. I use them to clean gravel too
You really an honest-to-god and COMPETENT engineer - something rare to see these days. That lathe is priceless (to say nothing of that clock - WOW!), and you have inspired me to look into building one. I hope to find a video of yours on how to do it. As to your asking others about ideas, I pretty much think you've outsmarted most if not all of them.

Dude! Your a genius! I’m a refrigeration/appliance technician. I’m always reusing scrap appliances to make stuff, but not on your level. I’m impressed with all you’ve done. I love the clock and desk toys. I’ve made a portable room heater for my shop from dryer parts as well as metal art, roses, from the cabinets. I’ve saved gears and pulleys to decorate the walls in my shop, and turned a refrigerator into a bookcase. I thought I was creative, but that’s nothing compared to the things you’ve done! @@Jeremy_Fielding In the case of the microwave motor, that looks like the ones in the modern top load washers with those synchronous motors on the actuators on those models, except those are 3 rpm, and the one you have is 6 rpm. It depends on what microwave has what type of synchronous motor for the turntable, such as 2.5, 3, 4, 4.8, 5, or 6 rpm. They also randomly change direction when you turn them on, and I'm sure the same is true for yours. For that reason, I made a mechanical tab that keeps mine from turning the wrong direction. When they bump into the tab, they reverse instead of stalling out.

The clock is genious, Jeremy! I'm a roaming fella and often doing odd jobs in our for a place to pitch my tent and call home for a moment. Everybody is always throwing great, usable stuff out and I end up salvaging many things and parts. Which become gifts and bartering commodities on the road.

You amaze me Sir. A debilitating injury put me out of industrial work in 2010. Having “time on one’s hands “ is a phrase often used to convey the ability to live a life with plenty of time to pursue interests we hadn’t the time to pursue before. Which is great unless you’ve got that time AND the hands, lol! I’ve become fascinated with electricity, magnetism, etc. , after my son and I (he’s 12 now) discovered hobby grade R/C drones/ Rockcrawlers. This led to a few years of building many smaller vehicles, 1/27, 1/16, and we’ve built a 1/8 Axial Yeti using a brushless motor on 4S LiPo’s , that things a screamer! We’re converting an old Kettler Pedal Car, over to electric which has led to me finding your videos and I’m so glad I did! I’ve become a “Tinkerer” , and I spend all my time usually down in the walkout basement,/my shop, either tear by something apart, or building something else....( The wife tells me I like it down there because all Trolls like to live under bridges)...I’ve subscribed and look forward to finishing all your stuff and just wanted you to know I think you did a fantastic job! Thank you!

Initially, I was impressed, but by the end of the video, I am sure that you are a mechanical mastermind! I build small projects, but you have set the bar high with those wood gears. I could only dream of building a working clock of that magnitude. I work on cars so I always have an abundance of bearings and gears. I overlook the surplus of washing machine parts, but now I will tear into them! Thanks for relighting my mechanical fire.
What a great way to utilize old broken appliances. We live in such a "throw away" society that it is inspiring to see someone use these still good products to have them live on. Your a genius with the gears and your desktop toys. Keep that mind lubricated with inventing. You are an inspiration to some young inventers. My hats off to you. Keep up the good work. Very ingenious repurposing of materials. You have a new sub here. I too scrounge things and workshop has "stuff" in it. Wife would give me a hard time about all the "junk" as she called it but early on she quickly toned it down when one of her favorite things broke so I took it to my shop and repaired it in about 10 minutes or so. End of story... Lol!!

Hey Zapp, I saw a video of his where he said it is not his thing. Probably to many obstructions in his suburban neighborhood You See in the background. He does have several generators and all the tech advice, and if you are here, you can do the rest.
Jeremy, I love all the gear toys and even more the manner in which you explain what you've done. I worked part-time at the local Woodcraft store in Richmond, Va. We had a customer who made complete grandfather clocks out of wood. I saw one of his creations and it was gorgeous. The reason for this posting is your gears in the clock. I didn't hear you give any details on making them. The customer discovered a unique method of hardening the wood he used in the gears by dissolving plexiglass in acetone and then soaking the gear in that solution. Once dry it made the gears extremely hard and durable so they would hold up to the contact in the clock. I don't know if this will be of any help or you may already be doing this. Thanks and keep up the great work. Many of us build vicariously through what you!

You are the KING of making useful stuff from (what my wife calls) junk. Now, i can’t get the builds done as fast as i would like. And my wife is constantly worried about my piles of materials.

In the early 1980s I made an old hand meat grinder powered by using a washing machine motor. We lived on a lot of venison back in those days and the old hand cranks wore you out. The motor had a start winding contactor that was worn out so I just put a push button switch ( the lid safety switch from the washer ) in place of the start contacts and mounted it externally, and then just pushed the button to get it started.
also the washers with a steel drum inside the steel drum with all the little holes all around it makes the best fire pit I've ever had and it looks really cool when the air coming through the holes ignites and burns like no other
If the washing machine has a stainless steel tub, it makes a great pot for pot plants, and also as a small fire pit.
i pull the metal tubs and weld legs on bottom and resell them as fire pits however his looked like many i see now days, made from plastic.
sell those as "one use" fire pits. (don't mind the black smoke)
Or a crab steamer.
I use the plastic ones for catch basins for downspouts and such. Dig a hole insert tub. you can make a concrete cover to run the downspout into. I don't have pipe so I made a funnel shaped concrete cover. I use them to clean gravel too
You really an honest-to-god and COMPETENT engineer - something rare to see these days. That lathe is priceless (to say nothing of that clock - WOW!), and you have inspired me to look into building one. I hope to find a video of yours on how to do it. As to your asking others about ideas, I pretty much think you've outsmarted most if not all of them.
Square gears? First for me. I was ready to watch the making of a fire pit or something simple but you flew over my head with what you do. Great stuff. Keep it up.

Dude! Your a genius! I’m a refrigeration/appliance technician. I’m always reusing scrap appliances to make stuff, but not on your level. I’m impressed with all you’ve done. I love the clock and desk toys. I’ve made a portable room heater for my shop from dryer parts as well as metal art, roses, from the cabinets. I’ve saved gears and pulleys to decorate the walls in my shop, and turned a refrigerator into a bookcase. I thought I was creative, but that’s nothing compared to the things you’ve done! I’m subscribing. Looking forward to seeing move of your great creations!

Young man, I love your enthusiasm for these well thought-out and fun projects. I especially like the ones where the meshing gears do nothing but entertain your mind as you are turning them, sort of like the spinners do for my grandchildren nowadays. I could see myself playing with the gears while thinking of new projects to build.

@@Jeremy_Fielding In the case of the microwave motor, that looks like the ones in the modern top load washers with those synchronous motors on the actuators on those models, except those are 3 rpm, and the one you have is 6 rpm. It depends on what microwave has what type of synchronous motor for the turntable, such as 2.5, 3, 4, 4.8, 5, or 6 rpm. They also randomly change direction when you turn them on, and I'm sure the same is true for yours. For that reason, I made a mechanical tab that keeps mine from turning the wrong direction. When they bump into the tab, they reverse instead of stalling out.

The clock is genious, Jeremy! I'm a roaming fella and often doing odd jobs in our for a place to pitch my tent and call home for a moment. Everybody is always throwing great, usable stuff out and I end up salvaging many things and parts. Which become gifts and bartering commodities on the road.

back in the 1970s my neighbor made a wood lathe out of a washer,,he made weed pipes with it and sold them at the flea mkt

You amaze me Sir. A debilitating injury put me out of industrial work in 2010. Having “time on one’s hands “ is a phrase often used to convey the ability to live a life with plenty of time to pursue interests we hadn’t the time to pursue before. Which is great unless you’ve got that time AND the hands, lol! I’ve become fascinated with electricity, magnetism, etc. , after my son and I (he’s 12 now) discovered hobby grade R/C drones/ Rockcrawlers. This led to a few years of building many smaller vehicles, 1/27, 1/16, and we’ve built a 1/8 Axial Yeti using a brushless motor on 4S LiPo’s , that things a screamer! We’re converting an old Kettler Pedal Car, over to electric which has led to me finding your videos and I’m so glad I did! I’ve become a “Tinkerer” , and I spend all my time usually down in the walkout basement,/my shop, either tear by something apart, or building something else....( The wife tells me I like it down there because all Trolls like to live under bridges)...I’ve subscribed and look forward to finishing all your stuff and just wanted you to know I think you did a fantastic job! Thank you!

Initially, I was impressed, but by the end of the video, I am sure that you are a mechanical mastermind! I build small projects, but you have set the bar high with those wood gears. I could only dream of building a working clock of that magnitude. I work on cars so I always have an abundance of bearings and gears. I overlook the surplus of washing machine parts, but now I will tear into them! Thanks for relighting my mechanical fire.

What a great way to utilize old broken appliances. We live in such a "throw away" society that it is inspiring to see someone use these still good products to have them live on. Very ingenious repurposing of materials. You have a new sub here. I too scrounge things and workshop has "stuff" in it. Wife would give me a hard time about all the "junk" as she called it but early on she quickly toned it down when one of her favorite things broke so I took it to my shop and repaired it in about 10 minutes or so. End of story... Lol!!

That would definitely be possible, but you'd need a BLDC motor for higher outputs.
Hey Zapp, I saw a video of his where he said it is not his thing. Probably to many obstructions in his suburban neighborhood You See in the background. He does have several generators and all the tech advice, and if you are here, you can do the rest.
Jeremy, I love all the gear toys and even more the manner in which you explain what you've done. I worked part-time at the local Woodcraft store in Richmond, Va. We had a customer who made complete grandfather clocks out of wood. I saw one of his creations and it was gorgeous. The reason for this posting is your gears in the clock. I didn't hear you give any details on making them. The customer discovered a unique method of hardening the wood he used in the gears by dissolving plexiglass in acetone and then soaking the gear in that solution. Once dry it made the gears extremely hard and durable so they would hold up to the contact in the clock. I don't know if this will be of any help or you may already be doing this. Thanks and keep up the great work. Many of us build vicariously through what you!
