I used to do apartment maintenance for about 10 years and would always find vacuums. One thing I always salvaged from them was the automatic cord reels if it had it. Then you turn them into shop extension cord reels by switching the plug.

A lot of things are thrown away, because their primary function doesn't work.
But then they have components inside that still work.
    That was beautifully put.

I have been in the vacuum industry for ten years. If I may, I'd like to offer a few tips on the vacuum motors. Clean air motors, like the one you took out of the bissell, cool themselves by having a ducted exhaust. That directs all the air from the fan across the motor to cool it. There is a good shot of the duct @ 1:04 in your video. Having the motor in an open cradle just lets the exhaust air from the fan go anywhere and not across the motor. Mounting the motor inside a box with some scrap blocks of wood cut to 45 degrees (to give a semi-round air path) and a 1" to 2" hole on one side should yield proper cooling. That being said 10 to 12 amp vac motors normally run at about 120 to 150 deg. fahrenheit. If you make the box a bit oversized, and then glue and staple any cheap carpet padding to the inside, it will quiet the motor down a good bit. Adding a piece of chicken wire or hardware cloth with some thin cloth (old tee-shirt or sock) or the foam from the vacuum itself if it has the washable style filter to the fan side of the motor will prevent sawdust or other debris from getting sucked into the motor.
Sorry for the long-winded comment but I hope this helps.

Yes, he did also mention the noise factor and using half of the vacuum's motor housing to make a base for the it. All I was trying to do was give some advice on those subjects so that he, or anyone else, can get the most out of the vacuum motors.

"I'm not an expert" ...no, you're a freakin Genius! I've been taking motors out of things for over 30 years since I was 6 years old and I always had lots of motors to play with but I never had the know how to work them into anything else so they'd just sit and collect dust.

Lol you're hilarious. I've been doing what he does, since 1985, changing motors in appliances, fixtures for better efficiency, and also repurposing them for other things.
He's a smart and inspiring especially since he can make and edit TH-cam videos much. better than I can. But one should be careful with the word Genius , as I'm quite sure even he will tell you, he's not Albert Einsten , or Loggie Baird, or Nikola Tesla , those people were geniuses. If you go around calling regular folks genius , then you have to come up with another word for actual geniuses lmao This guy , he is awesome and inspirational! Thumbs up and subbed,

Thanks for showing me that I am not the only person who picks up discarded stuff on the side of the road and hauls it home to be repaired or repurposed. Last summer I picked up a 10' x 10' canopy tent, like tailgaters use at football games, that took 3 minutes to fix and which for the past year has been providing a portable covered area for working on cars, etc. in my back driveway. Picked up a child's battery-powered car the other day, the kind that kids sit in and drive; only problem was a broken rivet in the steering mechanism (like a cheap tie rod end that failed) and in a couple of minutes drilled out both the broken rivet and the other rivet and will replace with bolts, washers and Nyloc-nuts for a permanent fix to the steering system. It was such a simple repair that I will offer it back to the neighbors to see if their kids still want it; if they don't, I'll ask if they still have the charger, which was not on the street with the electric car.
Question: Since most of today's consumer stuff is made out of plastic of one kind or another, what glues, adhesives or epoxies do you use to glue broken plastic pieces back together, or to rebuild broken pieces of plastic that are essential to the operation of a device, like smashed plastic covers, broken water reservoirs or dust containers, or missing clips or tabs that hold in a vacuum cleaner motor or an axle on a toy car?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and making these videos.

How are your twin girls doing 3 years later ? Are you hiding in the garage like you thought you would be haha? I didnt have twins nor girls but 2 sons and I'm here to tell you there is NO hiding from them and nothing is off limits to them hahaha .... What is theirs is theirs and what is yours is theirs and you can bet theyre going to break it , lose it or leave it in the grass for you to hit with the mower haha .... Maybe aggravating at times and very expensive but children are a blessing from God and they're more important than any of the things we try to do to hide from them haha ... Took me a while to figure that out ... Well I hope all us well with you and yours .. Be blessed in Jesus Christ's name ...

I hope you’re not hiding in the garage from them! So much better to hide in the garage _with_ them!!!! Teach them which end of a wrench to use. Teach them how to fix their horses (what is it with girls & horses, BTW?) Before long you should learn that if you're spending time with the kids, you're not getting yelled at as much, and - especially if they're in the garage with you - you get more unhindered garage time!
There's other things you'd better be doing, too, like reminding them that their mother loves them very much and they need too kiss here goodnight (win-win-win moment!) and telling them they have inner beauty.
There's more, but this is a start.
      Best wishes!

Man I’m digging your channel more and more. All this stuff is right up my alley. I dumpster dive sometimes, pick up free things in alleys, and every once in a while I’ll buy something for dirt cheap or just splurge if I want it that bad. But my first option is always to see if I can make it myself. Im not rich by any means, and any money I do have I like to save it incase my dog needs an operation. I picked up a craftsman shop vac from in an alley a while back. Someone threw it out because they didn’t want to clean the dog hair out of it and the wheels were also all jammed up with hair too. I cleaned it and it works fine. Today I snatched up a bissel carpet shampooer that someone left behind a recycle bin at the grocery store parking lot. So I have those and summer is coming real soon and I want to fix my current AC unit, or make one, and also make some sort of table saw or table router.

Wow... I do throw things out if I don't use them within three months. I just don't have room to keep everything. The only things I keep "infinitely" are motors, bearings, and belts since I use that stuff on just about all my projects. I am so happy to hear you are enjoying the channel!

  • @waltbeasley5878
    @waltbeasley5878 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Just found your Channel. Very nice. I'm retired now, but I was a Contractor for 40 years and I used to... and still do collect parts like you. I've made a lot of useful things with them and repaired many others. I would hazard a guess I saved somewhere in the neighborhood of 10K building or rebuilding things over the years. I'm glad to see you showing the potential of salvaging and reusing parts.

Dude! Thank you! Thank you! My wife thinks I am hoarding electric motors! Recycled components are my life! Some many uses; I was just given a hot tub to recycle and want to make a band saw out of the motors! Thanks for proving I am not insane!! Lol! Hoping you have a band saw video as well!

This is the second video clip of Jeremy’s craft. Reverse engineering in action. It is agreed that older equipment make better candidates for repurposeas they have better metal and fabrication? Keep it going Jeremy. Positive energy type of dude . I like this.

Mr. Fielding you're a freaking genius!!! First off I have a one car garage which from what I can see looks a little bit bigger than your shop, which is why I watched your video in the first place. I love that turn table, dust collector, air cleaner, oh hell I love your shop!!!! I never even thought of using old vacuum cleaners to do all that, once again you're a genius. thanks for sharing your tips and the tour of your shop.

Man your shop is amazing, I wouldnt be surprised if you get filthy rich later on for inventing something bad ass!! Your just like me in a sense. Other people see trash, we see potential. Your just way way better at building and your knowledge is way beyond mine. You've got a vision that most people dont and that's something special. Keep on keepin on man!!
