I had to put my knitting down last night as I was ready for this step and had never tackled such a situation (beginner knitter). I was worried I wouldn't be able to find an instructional video that combined provisional cast-on and folding a hem, but found yours immediately! I'm grateful for your passion of educating others. Thank you for your generosity! Blessings onto you!
Thank you so much for doing what would actually be the designer's job. This is why I'm becoming more and more reluctant to buy Petite Knit patterns. Nonetheless, great tutorial!
Thank you Tash for this wonderful video. I definitely love using a provisional cast on verses trying to knit in those stitches from picking up stitches from cast on. ❤
Great tutorial. Although I haven't yet knitted the Oslo hat, I have been wanting to. Your instructions will be very helpful. Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge
Thank you for this detailed video, Tash! My next step in the A.N.T. hat pattern is picking up from the provisional CO. I enjoy watching and learning from your videos.
Oh my goodness, thank you for this tutorial!!! I just bought the pattern and was reading it and now I completely understand how to do it! ❤ I’m going to watch your provisional cast on video as well!
Thank you so much for making a tutorial. Much appreciated! I purchased this pattern last year and have been wanting to make it, but was concerned about the brim.
Thankyou I was so stuck at this point and ready to give up on trying to work it out! I've done this step now and so happy because it's only my 2nd hat and 4th knitted project ❤ thankyou again 😊
Great tutorial! On my first try with the Oslo hat, I didn't use the provisional cast on and missed the correct stitch when creating the brim. I ended up making it a neck scarf. Definitely trying this method next attempt.
I absolutely love this demonstration! thank you so much, I've learned a lot! Do you think I can just continue knitting in stockinette all the way up without doing the triple brim? I think that's way too much fabric and will be too warm. thank you!
Your hat looks beautiful-love your color choices. One question. I am wondering what gauge you had with 112 stitches? I am using a fingering yarn-Knitting for Olive and Mohair-Berroco Aerial. Both are similar to the yarns you used. I am not getting the 23 stitches/4 inches as the pattern requires and imagine that you didn’t either-but your hat worked for a 22” inch head. Is there a lot of stretch in the hat? I am getting around 28-30 stitches/4 inches.
Hi Kelly After blocking, i am getting 24 sts over 4 inches. So not quite gauge of 23 but not too far off and it feels comfortable. 28 sts seems quite small. But blocking can make quite a difference. I would maybe pause and put the work on waste yarn or long cables or an extension cord and block it, just to see if it stretches out enough in blocking. At its widest point, from side to side, my hat is measuring 9.5" so would be 19" around and that is 3" negative ease.
I think it is a bit easier without the mohair. I have started doing that all the time now - the first row just with the fingering weight. It doesnt show at all. :)
Thanks Tash. Very helpful.❤ I'm currently knitting a top down sweater that has a hem finished with turning up the bottom and picking up every corresponding stitch to form the hem. I wonder if you know of some way of getting those stitches easier to identify as there's no provisional cast on to pull out?
Hi Anne. That can be a bit tricky but when I have done that before, i follow the column of stitches and put markers every 10 sts to make sure i am in track.
I have made 2 Oslo hats. One came out great but the brim on the second one came out wonky as I think my pick up stitches were off. I will definitely try this method. I am curious as I know you have knit both The Oslo and Musselburgh hat , do you have a preference of one over the other?
I have a bit of a preference for the Oslo hat. It is quicker to make, it has a triple thick brim instead of a quadruple thick. I think it looks a bit more polished. But the Musselburgh is hard to beat for almost completely mindless knitting. :)
Hi Tash, could you do a non provisional pick up with this. Too many needles that's way I knot magic loop for socks. And another question how is the all knit rims on hats , do they keep there shape and stay on head. I knit rib rims. Always thought there isn't any stretch in it. Thanks
Hi Yvonne, You can definitely just do a normal non-provisional pick up which is how the pattern is written. I just dont do it that way as I dont like trying to make sure i am in the right column and it isnt skewed. I find they stay on the head really well. The folded brim really does the trick. If it wasnt for that, i would want rib as well. :)
You have to pick up a stitch from the cast on and knit it with the stitch on the needles. It involves being sure you pick up the correct cast on stitch that is directly under the one you are knitting it with.
Nah, its fun! Just get some patience, settle in for the duration and youll enjoy it. I much rather these interesting parts than endless stockinette , yawn.

I actually used a tubie stitch minder for a provisional cast on recently and it was so wash to connect the needle and pull through!
Easy** not wash haha
That's a great idea. Whatever makes it easier gets a big thumbs up from me!
This is very helpful!! Thanks Tash!

Do you think the unpicking of provisional cast on, would be easier if the first row was without mohair? Would it show when all is said and done?
I think it is a bit easier without the mohair. I have started doing that all the time now - the first row just with the fingering weight. It doesnt show at all. :)
Super helpful! Thank you 😊

So how many stitches do you cast on. Your head size. I'm doing sz.3 needle, head is 21 1/4@@mostlyknitting
I cast on 112 sts.
Thank you so much !
You're welcome! :)
THANK YOU
You’re welcome 😊
Hi, new to your podcast, but you should use another cable, this way you just add tips and keep knitting. 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much Beatrice. :)
@@mostlyknitting you’re most welcome

Thank you Filomena. x
Oh my gosh this is hard
It does take time but then picking up the stitches takes quite a bit of time too. I hope the video is helpful at least.
Nah, its fun! Just get some patience, settle in for the duration and youll enjoy it. I much rather these interesting parts than endless stockinette , yawn.
There is a better provisional cast on you could use though.
Very helpful video, thank you!!
