  • When it was time for 6-year-old Morey Belanger to begin kindergarten, her parents had a choice: public school or a school for the deaf? They opted for the closer public school and the students have embraced their new classmate by learning sign language. Steve Hartman reports.

I taught a little girl many years ago who was profoundly deaf, but had gone to school with the same group of kids since kindergarten. Children pick up languages so quickly and by seventh grade the students were really better than the interpreter who came to my class with the child. If the lady was absent the kids filled in. It was amazing!

I am going to school to be a kindergarten teacher (hopefully or eventually preschool) and was doing some research on sign language in early grades, which is how I came across this video. I, nor my family, has anyone who is hearing impaired, but I've always wanted to learn sign language in order to communicate with others in that way and in some of the homework I've had, the big thing is in trying to come up with ways to communicate with students without disrupting the rest of the class...whether it's for modifying behavior or something a student might need while you're in the middle of a lesson. This story warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes to see that kindness was enough to get students to do this. I hope that even though my (future) students may not learn ASL fluently, that us communicating with some of the signs in class will help spark that love for communicating with others no matter the language. It's an awesome way to not only allow children with needs to feel right at home with their peers, but also teach other children about the diversity of friends they'll make and not allow the differences to separate them, but allow them to see the likeness to bring them all together.

So sweet making her feel at home making her fit it's students relaying round a neigh student. They should have same chances like everyone else

This is such a sweet and heartfelt story. I really enjoyed watching all of the children gather around Morey and help her along her way... God Bless Morey, and her parents!! But also, God Bless all the children in the kindergarten class too!! Special children gifted and shown kindness will pay pit forward when they get older..

Ironicly this will broaden the perspective to the other kids around her.
    They will benefit too.

It’s great to see kids caring for one another that way. Kentucky School for the Deaf is the oldest school of its kind in the U.S. and they struggle more and more every year to help kids and their families with deafness. The government keeps cutting their budgets down because they want to send deaf children to public schools. Only problem is not all schools are that welcoming.

When that girl called her 'a little gift basket'.....omg....what a sweet and extraordinary thing to say. ( I wouldn't be surprised if that girl grew up to be a writer)

A video on supporting the hearing impaired should probably include a CC option.

Her "Aide?" Do you mean her American Sign Language Interpreter? Or ASL Interpreter? Or Educational Sign Language Interpreter? Professional Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH)? Not the same thing as a Teacher's Aide, Teaching Assistant, or a Paraprofessional.

Monday update: The CBS app on Apple TV does have captions. Good! Suggest CBS adds getting the CC file added to the TH-cam upload as part of the normal workflow for all content.
Sunday: Wow! I saw this story and came to TH-cam so I could send the link to my def friends, only to find that CBS doesn't even let me turn on TH-cam Auto Captions. MAJOR FOUL UP CBS! **Everything** that CBS publishes should be captioned and audio described for the blind and hearing impaired. *EVERYTHING*! In fact - aren't you breaking the law by not doing so?
Well cool story, which makes not being able to share it with my def friends an even bigger fail.
So sorry for you CBS. Maybe its time to get with the program.
