As a former ASL Interpreter, THANK YOU for making Mauree at home with her own language in a learning environment, & making it fun for her. Thank you Steve, for doing this story!

Right? I’ve been an interpreter for 30 years and love it when I’m “useless” because they don’t need me.

Elon Musk said “What’s the point of sign language in a video if you have substitutes? Am I missing something?” He is right because most deaf people couldn’t understand that closed captioning “illiteracy”. ASL is not great to teach deaf children or a bad education because they struggle how to read sentences. I am still unhappy if ASL exists in some public schools except deaf schools. Hopefully, cued speech will teach them instead in the future. Sigh poor deaf children 😢 STOP TEACHING SIGN LANGUAGE. CUED SPEECH IS THE BEST CHOICE INSTEAD!
Cued Speech should teach deaf children, but a few cued speech teachers aren’t enough right now. I warned some parents who taught deaf children ASL, so using Cued Speech instead.

Perhaps the older generation can learn from these kids. These youngsters are more mature beyond their years than most adults. They're awesome, amazing and commendable! 😀👍🏻❤

Children are remarkably versatile and unbiased, given an honest, age appropriate explanation as to why a classmate is 'different' they will adapt and include that person.
My niece started school whilst undergoing chemo so she was totally bald. It was explained to the children that sometimes, because of her medications, she might be very sad or bad tempered and that she would not be able to help it.
She was accepted without a care. No teasing or bullying at all.

I think that every student no matter what school they go to they should learn sign language just in case something like this has to happen, even though a student that's deaf has hearing aids and can easily speak with others in their own way it's still amazing to have something they are more comfortable with as they may not be comfortable with what they have aka pictures, something to speak for them, an aid etc.

that's really cool. I am hard of hearing/partially deaf and I went to a hearing school with a deaf program and was in a class of 5-7 and all of the kids in my class were either fully or partially deaf, haven't seen them in a few years but I am trying to learn ASL. I can almost have a basic conversation with a kindergartener.

This is beautiful!! I'm glad they all learned sign language, cause they actually wanted to!! ❤❤ It's like me in Kindergarten, with my short height. My school knew I was coming. And, I'm from a town where everybody knows everybody. So some of the teachers already knew me. So, they knew I was REALLY small. So in computer lab. They built me this stool, for me to put my feet on, cause my feet couldn't touch the ground. And I had the smallest chair to sit in!! All the kids wanted to pack me around, and the teachers thought I was so cute. Cause I was SOO little!!

What sweet kiddos! Love the one little girls comment about her being a gift basket. Flowers & chocolate! What an adorable thing to say! I hope this little angel finds many more classmates like these but the reality is her parents will probably end up having to use a specialized school.that would be a real crime!

Children has this incredible capacity to be kind, empathetic, and understanding. When they learn there is something they can do to help a peer, 9/10 times they'll do it in a heartbeat. I have debilitating social anxiety, that started in elementary school. I didn't speak to my classmates often, but they understood it was just the way I was and accomdated me.

Some of my dad's childhood friends were deaf and he learned American Sign Language so he could talk to them. Then when my brothers were young one of their friends was deaf and quite often my dad would interpret for him, especially when my mother wanted us kids to come in for the night and he wanted to keep playing.

I love a great elementary school like this. The parents and teachers do get some credit for creating this atmosphere. But! Middle and high school are a whole different thing. If kids get to the point where the peer system starts to judge kids as too “weird” or too far outside the norm, those are the signs that the parents and teachers and counselor need to watch for.
