Good job Tessie ! Love air dried quilts . I was wondering you didn't show wiping down the line first . We always did because of birds . My grandma had to take hers to the laundry mat in later years because the oak trees had got so large they dropped stuff on the lines . Sap I think and wouldn't come off .Sadly someone followed her home one day. She put the quilts on her sofa and left to run an errand. When she got home the quilts were gone. She said " they must have needed them more than me " I'll just make more " . And she did ! She believed the Lord would provide and he never failed her . She believed in praying without ceasing . She always helped those in need . She never had much but she thought she was blessed . So were we !
I have made many a quilt and this is a great way to clean and care for a quilt. I wish more people cherished their heirlooms like you:)! There are hours of love stitched in those quilts:)!
I have my grandmother's quilts, one is embroidered 1932 on it. 2 have names embroidered on squares that person made, 1 just has names of ancestors. They got their fabric from flour sacks and such and scraps from the sewing mill so the colors were wild unlike the modern ones made in similar shades. The cotton batting inside still had particles, chip pieces from the plant it was harvested from. She told me 5-6 ladies would gather every so often and made a complete quilt in one days time.
Clean quilts, clean sheets, clean me, and freshly shaved legs! That’s the best feeling in the world! Your bed feels so good that night. Thanks for the information. I have several quilts but none are heirloom. I wish I was as lucky as you are in being able to know your heritage.
So true Tessie there's nothing better than line drying and as you say UV light has great antibacterial properties. Your quilts are gorgeous it must be very satisfying to see them hanging on the line and then wrap yourself up in a beautiful cleaned heirloom at night all cosy and warm wrapped up in memories ♥️xx
As a stitcher, I really appreciate the hard work that goes into these beautiful pieces! Well done Tessie, most people overlook how to look after these properly! Xx
Hiya Tessie gal. I too sure loved a laundered quilt. It is the best sleep. I have always loved quilts. I took a class 15 years ago. That was groovy. I now know how to quilt. Best time to do so is in the fall and winter while the weather is permitting. Watching you launder was fabulous & refreshing. Your voice is so relaxing as well as the sound of the water. You have a terrific weekend with your fam Tessie.
Hey sweetie!! I'm binging on your videos from this week and am enjoying them so much!! Your quilts are beautiful!! I will be praying for your family through this trying time... i do know how you feel...we have went through a recent job loss, but when that door closed the good Lord opened a new one and we have been blessed!! Your family will be too!! Tomorrow I am canning your famous strawberry pie filling!!!! I'm so excited!! You and Kenny have a blessed evening and we will visit again tomorrow!! OH! AND CONGRATULATIONS ON 40K WOOHOO!! WE'LL ALL BE HERE FOR YOUR 100K AND HIGHER!! YOU GO GIRL!!!❤👏👍🥰🙏🤗🙏❤
Lol, I hang my wash with seams matching too.😄😄😄 Have a bit of OCD. My sons grandmother made them quilts. I didn't know the best way to care for them and the younger son's quilt now needs repairs. This winter I'll have to do that and take it to him. He really loved that quilt. Blessings, Tessie.
And yes, when you bring them indoors they smell so good you think you've died and gone to heaven!! I have a beautiful blue quilt that I got at Goodwill. I just can't imagine anybody taking a handmade quilt to Goodwill, when it took so much time and effort to make it. Go figure - Diane.
I make quilts and love 💕 all the good information about how you care for your mother’s quilts !!! This was Special ~ you honor her is so many lovely ways !!!
You are so so blessed. I have nothing heirloom. I would give anything for a quilt but I cannot see either. I am not mechanical enough. Those quilts are gorgeous! So glad you have them.
Loved this video. My beloved Grandmother made us all quilts in her lifetime. Some stitched by hand. They are a lifelong comfort for me and a beautiful legacy for any family member that is lucky to receive one. Or, in my case 4. Thanks Tessie. How lucky you are.
I loved the smell of clothing after. drying in the sun. It's so fresh. Oh my! That line separator reminds me of my mother. (Ha!) God bless you, Tessie.
Tessie, you are so lucky to have quilts made by your mother to cherish. I am a quilter, but would love to have a heirloom quilt. Maybe in years to come my quilts that I have made will become heirlooms for my family to love and cherish. I dry all of my laundry outside on a clothes line, you can't beat the fresh air smell of newly washed clothes and bedding. Blessings from Australia.
What beautiful quilts & such a treasure to have!! I so wish that where I lived I could have hung up my laundry just like I use to at my parents house bc there nothing better. Maybe I just think that bc it bring back memories I don't really know but I do miss it. Unfortunately, most governing systems around here do not allow ☹️☹️. Yes, agree, the sun with the Vitamin D is a natural anti bacterial!! ♥️♥️ Thanks for sharing Tessie!! Take care & God bless!!! ♥️✝️✝️✝️♥️
Good evening Vernie my friend:) Good to see you as always:) I have some nice quilts that I treasure :) I hang my laundry out side now that it is so nice out:) Nothing like the sun to dry:) Love and hugs :)
Hey there Owen!! One day when you do a video it would be nice to see your quilts you have too!! I just love them such love, attention & details go into everyone that is made!! Always good to see you too my friend!! Take care & God Bless!! ♥️🤗🤗♥️
Great video! I have two of my family quilts we sewed as a family when I was young. We sewed them on a treadle sewing machine. 20 minute and 50 minute ads.
I remember my mom and grandma doing that like you it was only twice a year for washing. But if there was a nice windy day in between they would put them on the line just to air them out. They always smelled good. Sweet dreams Tessie. Keep smiling sweetie xoxo
I was just thinking of your mother today. Your mother was like my mother, she could sew like a professional in her day. I think girls in the 30’s during the depression were taught good really good sewing skills, and they didn’t waste anything. I can sew simple things but don’t even try difficult patterns. Take care and I’ll see you tomorrow.❤️
Great video Tessie. Thank you for showing us how you wash and hang your quilts. Both those quilts are so very beatutiful. Love You Sweet Sister. You all stay healthy and safe. God Bless Y'all. Hugggggggs
Quilts are great things - useful to keep warm, show artistic talent, show skill sets and they can be personalized. Every year in Toronto Canada at Pioneer Festival there is an amazing quilt auction to raise funds for MCC. The food, pies/tarts etc. are amazing I'm part of a volunteer team that makes tarts in a commercial bakery to be sold at Pioneer Festival.
I've been hanging a lot of laundry on the clothes line. I love the freshness of the laundry and saving on electricity. Yes, I agree. I say use it or give it away. 😊❤
Years ago, my dad put in a clothesline with metal posts and metal wire. That must have been in the '60's, and it is still standing! I don't hang laundry out like I used to, but when I had heavy items, I used to use two lines. That worked fine. I never saw the clothesline tool that you used. Have a blessed day!
Love those quilts. Thank you for this video. Between my husband and I we have a minimum of 5 pillows on the bed for sleeping. I noticed you had 2. Tell me the secret. Lol.
I love this video. I am 54 years old and just started learning to quilt in January! I love it and I am addicted to fabric now.(lol) I go into Joanns and get over whelmed by all the choices! Lol Yes man I will take one of everything! 😂 I took sewing in home ech in high school and hated it. My teacher made me rip apart a pair of shorts three times and the third time I said no not again. (I was a lil bit of a rebel then lol) I just hated it, I have just settled on the fact that it wasn’t my season in life for sewing. I liked the boys too much! Lol AWE THE FOOLISHNESS OF YOUTH!! haha thanks for sharing and Many blessings from Aledo Texas!
I wash my clothes in cold wash in the washing machine no problem. Dry on low. Your quilts are Beautiful! I like heirloom things as well. Enjoy your weekend my friend. Love ya Ann. ❤
What a great video! After watching this, and reading the comments, I have 2 beautiful quilts that my Grandma made me. I have had them since I was 14 - 16 years old. Have had then in my cedar chest all this time. I am 61 years old and it's time I start to use it. I realized that when I'm gone, no one after me will know anything about this quilt. They won't know who Grandma Minnie was, what her values were, or the time and love she put in for me. So happy this video came out. Thank you Tessie and all who commented. I needed to read this. Love you all.
I now know what is right for me. I was always taught to truly appreciate and to take good care of these type of gifts. However, how can I appreciate them if there in a cedar chest. I've shared with you in the past, how I feel at times Tessie, that your videos are something I need to see. I truly believe that God is very much involved with your platform and contents. And through your platform how many lives they have touched and helped. Lastly, my grandma was a can do woman like you Tessie. Her quilt was made of dress scraps. Nothing got wasted. The memories of grandma Minnie are wonderful and I have decided to make my home a respite place where I am surrounded with warm and comforting memories. Thank you Tessie for this video. It made me do some deep thinking.
I'm going through a pretty bad episode of sciatica (back nerve pain) and I felt a twinge just watching you wash the quilt, tessie. My own experience with bed quilts is that they accumulate dust over a long period of time. Dust isn't a good thing to sleep with. I've always loved quilts and yours is beautiful. I looked at your outdoor surroundings and it's so peaceful I wish I was there. The birds are a welcome addition. Cheers.
The only thing I ever washed in hot water were cloth diapers. Everything else was always done in cold water and hung out to dry. I just never wanted to spend money on heating the water. 36 years and we are fine and so are our clothes.
The scent of line dried clothing is one of the most heavenly in all the world! For our friends who don't have access to a wash tub, I just wanted to share that years ago, I figured out a way to wash my quilts in an agitator washer. I filled it with water and detergent, swished until it was sudsy, turned the machine OFF, then gently loaded in my quilt around the agitator. After allowing it to soak for a while, I would take a CLEAN [dedicated to this use only] plunger, and agitate the quilt by hand. Then I would advance the cycle to SPIN, to empty the water. Next, I would advance to RINSE, and allow it to cover the quilt in water. Again, I would agitate with the plunger. Finally, advance to SPIN to empty the water. This way the quilt is not harmed by twisting around the agitator! Hope this helps : )
Enjoyed ur tutorial on washing quilts.... it was beneficial for me because although I don’t have heirloom quilts I have store bought bed spreads that are too big for the washing machine..... it took me 4 tries to watch ur video yesterday and today because I’m going thru a lupus flair and it really takes me down, but it was worth ...... well done Tessie! 😃❗️👍
I have a blanket, crochet, that my mother made me.I have always hand washed in cold water ,in bathtubs.Cant hang,so put sheet on car hood, and spread out blanket on top.Very fast drying! Haha,I just remembered,I have three blouses spread on back seat of car.Put them there after wash at laundromat.Sun dried! 🤗
Hi Tessie sis 🌞 Love quilts! Yours are beautiful. I wash everything in cold water and dry on gentle. Yup. That's right. No fabric softener. Towels stay like new! I finally purchased some quality towels and they are still like new a year later. No fabric softener for towels because it makes them less absorbent. I use wool dryer balls. Clothes come out soft and static free. I'm not physically able to hang things outside and I have allergies, so this is the solution for me.
I've never had a quilt. Yours are beautiful! As I watched you clean yours, it reminded me of kneading dough. If I ever get one I will remember that. Much love, sister. Thank-you. ❤
Hello Tessie!!! Beautiful quilts! I did not know about drying them inside out! Great information to have!!! Quilts are SO GREAT! They are such good insulators!!! Happy Friday!💖🙏🙋♀️
Well this was a very timely video for me. I have a quilt that my husband’s great aunt made and our senior cat who just passed loved to sleep on it. He soiled it in a few places and I’ve been trying to figure out how I would wash it. I have a large capacity washing machine and I was considering washing it on the gentle cycle, but quilts get so heavy when they are wet that I was afraid it actually might be bad for the machine. I considered getting it dry cleaned but I don’t like the chemicals and I can’t really afford it. We aren’t allowed to have clothes lines where I live and I know it would not be good to put a soaking wet quilt in the dryer. I was thinking of hand washing it and draping it over some plastic chairs in the back yard when we have a sunny/low humidity day (which down here might not be until October).
Thanks for letting me "in" on my coffee break! I thoroughly enjoyed this video---I have some news of my own that I'll be sharing with you through email soon.....as soon as it is finished.......I think you'll be surprised, actually! Drying the quilts in the sunshine....awesome, Tessie! Many blessings (and we still pray for you and yours.....) from Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Tessie that's a great way to wash quilts the old fashioned way and hung out to dry in the sun:) We hang our wash outside every time now:) Nothing like the sunshine to dry laundry and quilts :) I'm going to be doing just that :) I planted more plants today I'll be making a video very soon:) Love you my sister:) God Bless you and Ken:)
Those are so heavy when they're wet . I remember when my mother would hang hers out to dry.. Lol that line would sag and us kids would have to run into the woods to find a big branch to prop up the clothesline🤗🤗🤗
Tessie I agree with you, use the things that are made for you and enjoy them!! I have started adding a little white distilled vinegar to my laundry, when I add the detergent...wow the difference is amazing :) so much softer!! You sure do hang a pretty wash 🥰
When I was young use to use a wringer washer n hung clothes n diapers etc on line. Sun dried is wonderful except sudden rain shower. Lol !! Love your quilts Tessie. God bless you. Enjoy your channel soo much. Stay safe n well ❤️🤗🙏
Hi, Tessie, wonderful quilts! It’s a real treasure and you treat it like a treasure. I wonder if they are filled with something in between. Every Quilt reminds me of the children book SOMETHING FROM NOTHING, do you know it? Although today Quilts are not made from old clothes, that was the beginning: no waste even of small things. Then it turned into an art with wonderful patterns. I’d really like to do it, too, but so far I prefer knitting, crocheting and...admiring the things I can’t. Thank you for sharing your heirlooms (haha: new word I learned). Love, Monika❣️
When we had a drought one summer we stopped up the bathtub when we showered and siphoned the water out the window with a hose and filled bucket to water our shrubs and plants. (Not food plants). That’s when we set up rain barrels. And during power outages in the summer we have used rain barrel water as “washing up” water. My “Amish” washline like yours came down from the tree it was hooked to and needs to be strung up again. I really miss it, but I’m still hanging laundry out on my wooden racks and two rolling clothing racks. It’s nice to see someone else do special laundry by hand.
Hi Tessie, such beautiful quilts and memories. Do you just wash certain things by hand on your scrubbing board? You said the quilts didn't fit in your machine, just the other bed things. So, glad to hear you do have a washing machine. I noticed in other videos that we have almost the exact same oak dining chairs. And also one day you were using a small black enamel pot with lid and I have that too and use to bake my round crusty bread in. Still catching up on older videos and enjoying them all. You are a gem!
Like you Tessie, I am very paticular when it comes to hanging out the washing. When the Sun is out then the clothes go on the line otherwise, they go on a drying frame indoors.
Thank you Tessie, your mother did a fabulous job on making those beautiful quilts. It's great you are keeping them clean and actually using them as well.I love the smell of clothes which have been dried outside in the fresh air.So nice. You will sleep so well tonight.Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
We have hot water but only wash in cold water. I use baking soda and peroxide as a homemade oxiclean in my cold water wash to kill germs. I husband prefers the dryer. :(. When we get the back porch built, I’m going to have to get a large utility sink too!
That's really hard.I did my quilts in the bathtub and was so heavy to wring out.very important to wash careful in cold water and hang dry for sure.they really do last a much longer time.
I was taught no matter how little money you have being clean was absolutely expected. We were to take care of anything and everything that we had in our home. I still do this. We respect and repair so we never despair is what mama taught.
Good Evening Tessie, Sisters, Brothers, and Friends:) Please remember to hit the like button it helps Tessie Greatly:) Also play Tessie's play lists when you can Tessie Will appreciate it greatly:)

That is how my grand mother did it; and she lived in New York City! :-)
Evening Jumpoff how are you:-)
Hi jumpoff:)
Hi Tessie sis 🌞
Love quilts!
I also bought the wool dryer balls. They are terrific! Great tips!
I just found out a ball of crumpled foil works . I don't use fabric softener either .
I've never had a quilt. Yours are beautiful! As I watched you clean yours, it reminded me of kneading dough. If I ever get one I will remember that. Much love, sister. Thank-you. ❤
Washed all our bedding yesterday omg smelled so wonderful sleeping last night , very old bedding I did
Hello Tessie!!!
Tessie I love your quilts, they are beautiful.
Thanks Tessi!!

Your mother was a very talented quilter :)
Owen, good evening ! I'll be waiting for that video, my friend .
@@ellenfisher6341 Good evening ellen my friend:)

Tessie, that's a days work honey !But your so right , nothing smells like line dried clothes ! Be blessed
Hello Owen! Hope your well. Have wonderful weekend.
Those are so heavy when they're wet . I remember when my mother would hang hers out to dry.. Lol that line would sag and us kids would have to run into the woods to find a big branch to prop up the clothesline🤗🤗🤗
Laura Vitaliani we did the same!
Yes Laura so true what a precious Memory !!!
Tessie I agree with you, use the things that are made for you and enjoy them!! I have started adding a little white distilled vinegar to my laundry, when I add the detergent...wow the difference is amazing :) so much softer!! You sure do hang a pretty wash 🥰
Great info. Thanks Tessie.
Hello Tessie!!!
Hello Everyone!!!
Good evening Tammy my friend:) How are you:)
@@owen4248 I am well, happy to be here tonight! And how are you my friend?
Hi Tammy !
Hello, Tammy! Hope all is well with you and yours 🤗😚
Hi Tammy!!! :-)
Those quilts are beautiful!!
Thank you for the very helpful tips☺
When we had a drought one summer we stopped up the bathtub when we showered and siphoned the water out the window with a hose and filled bucket to water our shrubs and plants. (Not food plants). That’s when we set up rain barrels. And during power outages in the summer we have used rain barrel water as “washing up” water. My “Amish” washline like yours came down from the tree it was hooked to and needs to be strung up again. I really miss it, but I’m still hanging laundry out on my wooden racks and two rolling clothing racks. It’s nice to see someone else do special laundry by hand.
That sounds like my life daily :) I do not have water drains and bucket all water :)
I do not have a Traditional Machine It is a small Portable one
I do ! Here is what My Machine looks like th-cam.com/video/Kcn5ARMQsJw/w-d-xo.html
@@HomesteadTessie I am so glad you at have something to help with the wash, even though it small.
I wanna come over and hang out with you for the day!😊Love you Tessie! Joey from Minnesota 💜
Thank you so much!!
Just watched your pre you tube video your son made. And joined his channel. I love quilts but don’t have the patience to make them.
Twisting the quilt can break the seams.
Love all quilts
I bet those quilts smell soooo good. From hangin out in the sunshine and fresh air.
great ive seen some of your video s sbout old days....i really enjoyed this one....
Glad you enjoyed it
Tessie, you are on of the hardest working ladies I know.
