  • What is the UK’s Controversial Plan to Deport Migrants to Rwanda?
The UK government is under increasing local and international pressure to abandon its plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda with critics saying the policy is a human rights violation.
But the government is trying to push it through - and if successful - the plan could allow the deportation of tens of thousands of asylum seekers to Rwanda.
Britain has signed a new deal with the East African country after the UK Supreme Court annulled a previous plan.
The government said any person entering Britain after January 1, 2022, will be deported under the policy insisting this will tackle human smuggling networks and deter people arriving through ‘’illegal, dangerous or unnecessary methods’’
According to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, ‘’there is no way to stop people coming here unless you have a deterrent that means they will be sent elsewhere. It's as simple as that. This is our deterrent and we are doing everything we can to get it on the statute books and get it up and running."
On December 11, British MPs approved the controversial plan with 313 lawmakers voting for a bill backing it while 269 voted against it.
This happened barely a week after the UK and Rwanda signed the new treaty giving the East African nation a mandate to host those to be kicked out of the UK.
According to the UK government, the country’s asylum system costs £3 billion every year with £8 million spent daily on hotel accommodation for refugees and asylum seekers. The government wants to cut this expenditure.
It has promised to cater for those to be deported to Rwanda including accommodation and living expenses for up to five years.
The UK has so far given Rwanda £240 million in economic development ‘aid’ with another 100 million pounds expected to be given in 2024 and 2026 in two installments.
This is on top of an estimated £170,000 per asylum seeker that the UK government expects to spend under a five-year scheme.
The plan was first announced in April 2022 by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson after Britain and Rwanda struck a deal dubbed “UK-Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership”.
Britain hopes to reduce the number of asylum seekers to below 100,000 annually - a situation the government said would help it save billions of pounds. But opposition politicians reject the government's claims that the policy will save costs.
In 2022 alone, there were over 600,000 net immigration, according to the UK government.
In declaring the deportation plan as illegal, the UK Supreme Court said Rwanda was not safe for asylum seekers.
Rwanda has repeatedly rejected claims that it is not safe for deportees.

Got to send them somewhere, public don’t want them, they’ve tried moving some on housing estates and locals are fighting back, Rwanda seems to suit them more

Rwandan government rejected rwandeese back to rwanda from neighboring countries who fled wars and now its side lining making deals with UK government to send asylum seekers to rwanda yet those who fled due to genocide were refused back to rwanda,, what's the deal behind this? They will end up entering uganda when mistreated by Rwandan government which will again be an issue to Ugandans in future as museveni came as a refugee and ended up a dictator in uganda.
