I ply with the Lazy Kate behind my chair and a tension box under my chair(Eileen Chadwick, The Craft of Hand Spinning). This keeps the yarn in nearly a straight line and relieves my hands of the task of maintaining tension. I just have to do a little bit of guiding. The old adage is-'Spin when the sheep are asleep'. 'Spin when the family is asleep' is more like it.
