What a fantastic idea! The painting turned out beautifully, and I really appreciated how you walked us through each step of the process. I’m just starting to learn about oil painting, and I’ve never seen anyone switch back and forth between oil and casein before. I was under the impression that you couldn’t layer anything over oil. Is it possible because you’re using a faster-drying medium like Liquin with the oil? Or is there a specific interaction between casein and oil that makes it work? I’d love to learn more!

@@sirmovielover thank you and so glad you asked that question- it’s one that gets asked a lot. The casein is made with an emulsifier, milk. If I were using egg tempera, that emulsifier would be the egg. That’s what allows it to be layered with the oil paint.

I should mention that many artists that use this technique use other mediums to make their glazes. A popular one is linseed oil. I’ve experimented over the years a lot and I’ve found that Liquin just works for me best. I’ve always had my parrots around while I paint and now it’s my little toddler as well and Liquin is profoundly less stinky than other oil mediums. It dries fast too and has really great glazing properties too.
