I LOVED my times at Dulles, 2004-05. I was a flight attendant with United Express, my first “Fly Guy” job. I walked through that Eero Saarinen-designed main terminal with pride every day (despite the fact that the rest of the airport was a nightmare). I loved every moment of it - especially after those opening titles of “Airport 1975”, one of my favorite films..
My only trip to Dulles was on a short lived Independence Air CRJ from Boston where they handed out a few gifts for each pax. I came back on UA express CRJ, and after boarding we heard a small bang. Somehow the left front door failed and hit the ground. Not my lucky day. Boeing is obviously not the only one with door issues.
this is so cool! thank you for posting! i live super close to dulles and flew out many times. flying id deffinately not the same and a burden. ive ridden the mobil lounge, but it took us to another terminal, gone was it going directly to the plane!
I flew out of Dulles in early 1976 headed for my first foreign service assignment. TWA was great then, but I was bumped in Rome. (Complicated routing to Rome, Athens, Cairo and finally Jeddah.) The TWA rep in Rome told me that I had been bumped to a later flight because he wanted me to be on a flight that had nicer people on it. "Those Greek people are very nice and you will enjoy it." Totally courteous and made me happy to be bumped. He handed me a luncheon voucher and then sent me to the airport barber shop for a shave so that I would be refreshed for my upcoming flight to Athens. I spent the night in Athens and then checked in for the Cairo leg, where I was bumped up to first class because I had been inconvenienced the day before. Today, it is a flying Greyhound with very tight seats, sit down and shut up, or else treatment, mobs of surly and unruly passengers and 14 hour non-stops. Much cheaper, though.
@@dma124 Deregulation led to more airline carriers and cheaper tickets. People talk of the old days of flying. The reality is that very few people could afford to fly back then. Nowadays, the experience is more like a Greyhound bus. Our society has been in decay for quite some time. Don't just watch old airline vids. Watch old vids of city life. All the people were civil and dressed properly. A very orderly polite society.
Most of the time the airlines owned the food service company. They were actually employees for that carrier. In the early 80s when hard times hit the airlines. They were the one of the first ones to get contracted out. Most of them taking a 50 percent pay cut. This was made before deregulation. Fuel was cheap. The could afford to have gas gussling 727's and 707's going out with 60-70 percent full. Then in '73 OPEC cut the fuel supply back. This more than doubled the price for their fuel! I do love the old jets though! Nostalgic!
When I was very young I travelled with my parents on the first TWA 707 flight from Miami to St Louis. I don't remember much of it other than how loud it was in the cabin of a 707
Never got to fly on TWA, but I do remember seeing their jets at Ontario International Airport (ONT), along with the planes of PSA, Hughes, Continental, American, and United.
Beautiful and interesting video !!! I took the Mobile Lounge from the main terminal to the midfield dock , boarding a Continental MD 83 From Dulles international to Denver Staplelton in August 1994 .
At the time Dulles was frequently empty, designed for "future" international flights. One funny thing is that flights often departed before they arrived, due to the mobile lounge times being used.

Thanks for checking it out. No, did not work for them but I did have a great relationship with TWA via business but a most memorable number of flights on their 707s as a child - those made the life long experiences which makes me do all I can to promote that era and the decades of aviation after.
@@Starboard76 Well my first 707 at age 9 was Boston-Paris. For some reason they made Boston the origin of their round-the-world flight for the last three years. You'd think New York. I remember passing by a first class lounge on the way to coach. And they served children first. :) BTW, do you at all remember that back then, the planes had a very strong kerosene? smell, which mixed with coffee, a unique odor for sure. I wonder what changed between then and now? cheers
Guy in the left seat doing the initial preflight-old school-bet he held an A & E license instead of the later A & P-which I hold. Was a bit older than the kidlet in the movie-but I wanted to be that dude. Wear that WAY COOL Trans World boiler suit-man-you were SOMEBODY. So I did. Not for Trans World-but a couple of others. Now semi retired. Things change-sometimes for the good-sometimes for the not so good. Regrets-NONE WHATSOEVER.
The film was copyrighted in 1970. The ford trucks are late-sixties, early 70s vintage. The Civil Aeronautics Board changed the mechanic certification from A&E to A&P in 1952. Assuming that the guy in the white coveralls running the flight controls at the beginning, had at least 18 years seniority at the time of filming, it is possible that he may have originally held an A&E certificate, but my guess is that when the FAA was formed in 1958, all of those old certificates were converted to A&Ps. (I’m recently retired after 35 years at United. I changed my A&P certificate to plastic when those came out.)

My first memory of Dulles is this era. I remember taking the Mobile Lounge to the plane. It was such an occasion.

Ahhhh, flying in the late 60's and early 70's! People still dressed up, behaved themselves and much much better food than today.

Copyright at the end states that this was made in 1970. Gas was what, 25 cents a gallon?

TWA Boeing 707 Madrid-New York (1969). I was 7 years old. It was my first trip by plane. AMAZING.
