    Now, imagine pairing this rich score with that incredible mansion set of the original run. It was hands down the most breathtaking set I’ve ever seen in theater.

    • @johnkeeter3242
      @johnkeeter3242 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agreed 100%. I count myself very lucky to have gotten to see the original production with the full set. I have never witnessed an audience reaction even close to the ooh's and ahh's (and applause) when that mansion floated silently down from the rafters.

      @mattTexas, Unfortunately I have never see any production of the show except a old, technically flawed video an audience member made. So, I searched to find a photo of the original set you mention , but it won't post here. I was involved designing sets, lighting, etc. for Community Theater in my 20's, 30's and have a continued love from afar. I too, would lave lost my breath upon seeing it live. I am absorbing every note as I savor every inch of the mansion. :)

    Lloyd Webber's crème de la crème. The mature composer + sprinkles of Puccini + nuances of Korngold + brassiness of Ives. + the Influential Americana Jazz Band + the allure of palace intrigue in Hollywood at, (arguably), it's brightest time.

    Sunset Blvd is by far my favorite musical. The score captures the mood of the movie so well and is just beautiful. I'm fortunate to have gotten to see the West End production in the 90s with the original set, and I'll never forget it. It was truly an experience. Now, whenever I watch the movie, this is the music I hear in my head during each scene.

    Desde la primera vez que escuché el soundtrack de esta obra, en la versión protagonizada por Glenn Close me enamoré de la música, de las canciones, de la historia (que ya conocía de la película de Wilder) y de la capacidad de Andrew Lloyd Webber por transportarnos a la magia del teatro musical. Qué versión sinfónica tan bella 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

      Not sure about those, but when I heard a concert performance of the suite on BBC Radio2 a couple of years ago now, the fourth movement was music from "The Woman in White". I think the constraints of fitting all four onto a single CD (no way to do it really) meant it wasn't included here

      Pretty sure that would be breaching copyright although ALW released a dvd of "Love Never Dies" about 15 years ago. This sounds twice as good if you play it in "Dolby Atmos". It's like your sitting in the middle of the Orchestra with the Timpani sound behind you, the trumpets on your left, trombones/French Horns on your right (I must mention the first/solo French Horn lady. Her playing was absolutely spine tingling).

    Two observations: 1) Where was Too Much in Love to Care? 2) Why is the entire orchestra white? I know there are so many world class musicians of colour because I've had the pleasure of working with them! Very disappointed in the fixer who should probably be made to retire as a result! ALW and his team should be more on top this as it's not only hugely embarrassing for him, it's highly offensive and reaffirms a lot of the negative stereotypes associated with musical theatre. I would say I'm shocked, but sadly I'm not.
    Simon Lee ruins so much of the music by having the orchestra play too slowly for a lot of the snappy songs such as 'Let's Have Lunch', and also by ignoring so many of the amazing original orchestrations by David Cullen; the hidden hero who finds a way to help every ALW score sound unique with his clever way of orchestrating. Don't get me wrong, Simon Lee has come up with some great ideas (particularly the way the piece ends), it just would've been great if he didn't try and put his own stamp on a score that didn't need it and is probably the most underrated score in the history of musical theatre! I LOVE Sunset Boulevard, it changed my life, it's just a shame I didn't have the opportunity to protect so much of what's special about the music of Sunset Boulevard.

    • @lukespurgeon5964
      @lukespurgeon5964 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not hugely embarrassing for ALW, nor is it highly offensive. Listen to the recording and point out one musician who doesn't deserve to be included because they aren't talented enough. I'll wait... That's right, you can't. Every single person on that stage had trained for years, spent countless hours practicing their instrument in order to be good enough to be included in this orchestra. So whoever hired these musicians did their job well. They hired people able to perform the job with excellence. Not one of them should be fired for being a subpar musician.
      That said, I'm going to assume you were not part of the hiring process and therefore have zero knowledge on how people were chosen. It could have been based on those who've played in the pit for the show previously, could have been union regulations, could have been blind auditions. Or it could have been a disgusting racist who knowingly and purposefully choose to hire white people only. I hope it wasn't. But if it was, I hope the person is prosecuted to the full extent of the law! The point is, you don't know what went into the hiring process. Neither do I. So why are you jumping to such negative conclusions, passing judgement on those involved, and showing your own ignorance and discriminatory attitudes? Can't you just enjoy the music for what it is, and congratulate the talented people who brought the score to life?

    • @Baribrotzer
      @Baribrotzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It was recorded in Britain, at The Drury Lane Theater. I suspect that the musicians were pit-band veterans; the lack of doubling in the woodwind section suggests symphonic players - who tend not to double - but it might also mean that Lloyd Webber hopes for symphonic performances of this and his other suites. It's possible that non-white players are rare in British symphonic and pit-band circles, but I don't know any facts about that.

      @@I.Alfred.Williams Assuming this was recorded in England and I'm a black or Asian or some other ethnic musician, I might not be as appreciative of this music and have a perfect right to complain. Even passive discrimination is unacceptable in the 21st century. I can appreciate the music and still be cognizant that this is an all white hired orchestra. It's not either/or but and.
      This could very well be an orchestra from a different era when the musicians were always white. Remove the women, which is a more recent addition, this could be an orchestra from the first half of the 20th century, although six female violinists were added in 1913 to the Queen's Hall Orchestra in London. But this was very rare. Usually, always men. Always white. In this case, it's the latter. But nice music playing.
