Isn't the 'Generator' connection an input, not an output? I'd love to see a block diagram of your whole system. You've made so many changes I dunno whats goin on haha.

Yes, I should have said emergency power output port, for some reason my mind keeps confusing the two.

    • @paulwakefield5696

The Deye has 3 AC ports:
      1. Grid - Feed grid in/excess power out as required. This one is shut off when the grid goes down.
      2. Emergency Load - Powered by a configurable blend of solar/battery + grid if available., keeps working off solar/battery when the grid goes down.
      3. Generator/Smart load - Input for generator, microinvertors, or alternative AC supply. Alternatively can be installed as an output that turns on when certain conditions are met, e.g, there is excess solar (called Smart Load).
I have 2 of these guys running in parallel.
I live in South Africa where we sometimes have rolling blackouts, so most of my house is powered by the Emergency Load output. The exceptions are the electric water heater, powered on the Grid side (so uses Solar/Battery if available, grid otherwise, turned off if no grid), and the pool filter pump, powered by the Smart load output, so I've set this up to only run once the batteries are fully charged on sunny days.
All this is super configurable, so you can choose when to prioritise battery vs. grid, or charge off the grid/feed battery into the grid at different times of day if you have variable tariffs.
Also important to note that the inverter will BLEND grid, solar and battery as required to supply the Emergency Load. The 5Kw inverter can actually bend in an extra 3Kw of Grid, giving a potential continuous output of 8Kw on the Emergency Load output when the grid is present.
Some other combination inverters will only run on Solar/Battery OR grid. My friend's inverter is like this. If the PV input can't supply the full load it will initially power the load from Solar+battery, then when the battery drops to its minimum charge level, it will switch over to powering everything from the grid, leaving the PV to charge the battery until it gets full enough to take over again, cycling the battery unnecessarily.

Yeah in the context of this video Dave mis spoke but its interesting to note the flexibility of the generator connection.
The Generator connection can function either as in input for AC coupled solar panels / Generator OR it can be used as an output for dumping excess power into a resistive water/sand heater etc.
I have mine (6KW model) setup to use the solar to charge a bank of batteries / run the emergency load (lighting, fridges/freezers, IT equipment) once the batteries are changed and the emergency load is satisfied any excess power is sent back to my main switchboard where its available for use elsewhere in the house kitchen, laundry etc or if there is nothing running its exported to the grid, what each input/output does is programmable as it's monitored by CT clamps and little energy meters connected to the inverters communication bus.
The capabilities of these inverters for the money is hard to beat.

@@paulwakefield5696 Great summary. I'm going to connect two extra 440W panels I mounted yesterday into the 800W 2 input Hoymiles microinverter I have into the Gen input to give me some extra power. I presume that extra gen power gets treated like the solar input and can charge the battery/load/grid as desired.

  • @tlhIngan

Yes, these devices typically have a delay on AC power restore because you might have situations where the AC power comes on then off because something blew. As well, w hen power comes on, there's often huge spikes and surges around because things will be powering up and the power on spikes can do wreak some havoc. So it would wait a minute for the grid power to stabilize to ensure it can adequately figure out how to push the power onto the grid again. It's been known for power to be re-established only to have the fuse blow a short while later, or for reclosers to operate and then disconnect again.

Apparently these inverters can produce an audible 20kHz tone (PWM frequency). Olden ears won't be able to hear it but Golden ears might. An audio spectrum might be interesting to look at. A mobile phone app would do the job.

I installed My batts, then 2 weeks later a wild storm took out local grid for 8 hours, had to speed run setting up a gpo to the backup socket on the inverter as daylight ran out, kept the fridge and freezer running, used a 36v Ryobi inverter to run my laptop and phone and a 18v Ryobi inverter to power up the modem for internet.

When you disconnect the grid, the system goes into what’s known as “island mode” you need to check with your local regulations to see if you need to install an earth neutral bonding relay. . It varies from model to model but it’s something I had to do on mine. You’ll probably find something called grid disconnect signal in the settings.
Worth checking out for safety reasons

So it behaves just like my Aurora has for the last 15 years. That's just a plain twin string inverter. Johannes Hubner of the Openinverter (EV) project has used his EV to run a cheap Chinese 360VDC input inverter to create a local grid and gotten his PV inverter to come back online. Due to the design of the Chinese inverter, it would then backfeed and charge the EV battery if the 'grid' voltage went too high.

...From a grid stability perspective is would be "INTERESTING" (read bucking bronco), if a huge number of solar feedins appeared in the first few seconds after re-establishment of power...hence the module monitoring and applying a (hopefully randomized) delay before resuming feeding power back to the grid.... YMMV...

Hybrid inverter is the term generally used for inverters that support both solar and batteries. Can this inverter actually run AC loads from solar only without a battery? You mention connecting to the "Generator" port a lot, but this is probably an input for an external generator to provide input power when solar output is low and the battery SOC drops to a defined level.
Essential or critical loads are normally connected to the "Backup" output terminal of the inverter and a battery is required to run those loads. The Fronius GEN24 is an example of an inverter that can actually run the backup output directly from Solar DC without a battery, but can this Deye do that as well?
