Takes me back nearly 30 years; someone at work bought a Gateway PC, they got the system unpacked and set up, but didn't have a clue how to use Windows 95. It came with a large pack of CDs - games, encyclopedia, reference books, educational stuff - which they couldn't install. I helped them out with that.
I have had the similar long-boot error with "AntiX Linux 21" on my "Acer Aspire" laptop (2008). Each loading of the system took approximately 5 minutes. Eventually I was forced to change the modern Linux kernel in the grub menu for an older one. Afterwards the system always booted nice and smooth. It must be said however, that I hadn't got any hard disk drive on my laptop at the time. Aforesaid system "AntiX Linux 21" ran just from a tiny little SD card. Back then some people told me about the absence of HDD being the cause of the whole issue... =))
those mainboard compatiblity switches are so cool! Thinking of using tinycore on some servers, will probably use fedora because i'm used to it. Cool to learn more about it from this video -- i didn't expect this to work fine on this machine 😂 that is kind of amazing. Honestly " tc" being the package manager has me concerned 😂 so i'm not too sure Running the application from the terminal to troubleshoot. Classic
Back then you had to definitely read the manual. Not sure I’d use tc as a server as you’re by default one sudo away from root. It’s nice that it’s basically Linux legos though if you want a real custom use OS.
@@IkesVintageTech Yeah, it is tough -- the biggest players in the Linux server space seem to be the biggest players in the Linux spying spaces... RHEL is closed-sourcing and this was the main reason I was wanting to find something else... But ... -.- I'm not using Ubuntu. So I'm not sure what I'll go with, I don't think I want an Arch server, either, lol. I will probably just bite the bullet and use Fedora. DNF is just too good and please tell me why having "rm" instead of just "remove" in a package manager is so rare? Seems like common sense. 😂 I'm at a loss I hate linux
@@emmaccode we use a hardened version of CentOS for most of the stuff where I work. It’s all offline but they still have to make sure it’s sealed tight.
I always like the Gateway Machines, although the cables were always a sight. (Also, nice job on the video work, what tool do you use to show a split screen with magnification?)
I use DaVinci Resolve to edit and they have a decent suite for editing and adding clips as needed. That was pure optical zoom from that camera overhead just cropped in place with manual focus.
To me it looks like DMA writes are failing and eventually falls back to PIO mode. A potential easy fix is swapping the 40 conductor IDE cable with an 80 conductor. Thanks for the video!
Does that system have ATX soft power off feature or is it the AT power switch ? I forget when they transitioned over gateway was one of the last ones to
I've tried Tinycore in the past, but I'm just a little disappointed. I suggest something more efficient like Slitaz. Perhaps you could have better load time?
Tiny Core rules!
sadly, not on PPC

When I got my first modern computer I thought had to install all those CD’s. Turned out it was all on there lol.

That’s a great point. I’ll give that a shot and see. Thanks!

AT power switch routed from the power supply in the back. Very satisfying spring back and click when pressed.

I’ll have to look into that, thanks for the suggestion! I also wanna look into some era appropriate Linux distros.
Linux on a Old Computer.
The most OK computer you could get in 1995
When your OS is less usable than Windows 2000, that is crying shame.
I imagine with a newer system it would be more usable. I like that it's the bare minimum to build onto it as you like
