      There's a photo on Pinterest looking down a road towards the Mt St Helens eruption filling the sky, but stopped in the middle of the road with a motorcycle hitched onto the rear is a Ford Pinto!
      Even if the owner wasn't struck by lightning, they certainly deserve to have been!

    Constructive Criticism: Stefan does a really good job of getting the information across. His voice and tone and speed of delivery is very clear. The only thing I see he should work on is his gesturing. Move those hands in other directions instead of looking like your rubbing a pillar or something. Doing the same gesture over and over becomes distracting after awhile. Try moving your hands horizontal at times instead of just vertical. Like, when describing the ash cloud, move your hands outwards to describe size.

    Well explosive eruptions can happen if the magma drops below the water table and vaporizes a large volume of water at once...like they're worried about on The Big Island....and an example of another is Mt. St. Helens, which had volcanic lightning and was potentially caused by a steam explosion.

    I imagine all the friction coupled with the fact that water makes a good conductor when not in a pure form is probably correct. I don't know how conductive ash is - it probably depends on the minerals in it - but rocks aren't generally known to conduct electricity all that well. However, dust, ash, etc. can be quite good at generating static charges.

    Electromagnetic energy is released from the earth during earthquakes, volcanoes and any other activity where it can escape from inside of the planet, where it should be. This happens from fault lines and other weaknesses all the time, and is dissipated in the ground for the most part. Obviously it is particularly strong somewhere like this.
    If you read about the British Airways flight piloted by a Captain Moody (was his first name Eric, I forget) he was flying a 747 over Java, and they had St Elmo's Fire on the windscreen and all 4 engines stopped working. This was in the 1980's and the ATC didn't think to warn them that they were flying over a volcano. Interesting and relevant story. The engines actually began working again when they got lower down. Gave everyone a very nasty fright and the sandblasted the windows.

    When you misunderstand regular lightning, there's not a chance you will understand volcanic lightning. They're not creating charge separation, they are restoring charge balance.

    • @chrisschoenthaler5184
      @chrisschoenthaler5184 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill DeWitt 1:10 “...a huge charge imbalance which eventually gets evened out by a sudden burst of moving charge in the form of a lightning bolt.”
      That’s exactly what he said. Lightning is CAUSED BY charge imbalance.

    • @BillDeWitt
      @BillDeWitt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I was talking about the larger systemic separations, but I see that I was not clear about that. By "they" I meant storm systems and volcanoes as a whole. They exist because of larger planetary and interplanetary charge separations.

    Piezoelectric effect from silica in magma quickly going from high pressure to low pressure....the crystals are under strain which builds a charge..the eruption to our low pressure environment causes the micro crystals to fracture and dump their charge..

    Guys - regular lightning is probably driven from above (Google sprites, blue jets and other more significant electical activity occuring immediately before lightning strikes) especially given the now confirmed plasma interactions in our atmosphere.
    ...I wonder what is driving the lightning from volcanoes! Who knows? Maybe there is some kind of charge separation within the earth that causes this. Maybe the earth is charged differently in the core. Potential gradient of 120 volts per metre from sea level (above the earth's surface). I'd love to know what that electric field is within the earth!
    Maybe we can use news like this to shed us of the pre-Copernican Earth (or Copernican Sun) as the centre of the Universe view from an electrical perspective? We are part an electic circuit from the sun, which is probably part of a galactic electric cicuit, etc.. I love Eugene Bagashov's "There is no ground in space"
