    My experience as well. My daughter was highly recruited but it was all pretty much based on AAU. Even the coaches that showed up for her HS games seen her originally at AAU games. Parents should understand this if they think their kid will play at the next level.

      Montverde Academy is the best prep school ever my son went there played football I coached there and the experiences we both have because of MVA is life changing ! Lots of love there lots of uplifting and community there . Maybe it was different when goofed Dorian was coaching there maybe that’s a reason they got fired !

    THis is good info, I am planning on my son playing for S. Korea, and Montverde is on my radar as it isn't too far down the road from my hometown. Guess we see if we get a call then, gotta put in the work. I have been learning ball so I can play and practice with my son since he was born... got a long while before any of this goes down though lol.

    Would love to hear your comment on high school ball versus AAU when it comes to recruiting.

    • @DorianGroup82
      @DorianGroup82  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      High school coaches have never been more irrelevant than they are today.
      AAU is the closest thing to professional basketball at the prep level.
      Everyone is out there for the money (scholarships/NIL). You have to perform at an exceptionally high level against the best players in the country regardless of location, age or physical maturity. If you can play 17U, you’re going to play 17U.
      The NCAA opens up the month of July recruiting specifically for the marketing circus that will ensue. Athletic departments plan their budgets around July recruiting. Families plan their vacations around these tournaments.
      The crowds are sparse. There can either be 8 people at your game or 1,000. Celebrities right there. ESPN cameras. College coaches and NBA Scouts.
      High level AAU is as much of a mental evaluation as it is physical.
      High schools are trained to protect and shield kids from outsiders. The antithesis of recruiting.

    Didn’t Montrose take all the St. John Prospect Hall kids? I played against Montrose Christian in 99 in Dayton Tennessee at the Christian Nationals. I played for Victory Christian Center from Charlotte, NC. Montrose played with 4 guards.
    They were suuuuuuper sharp! They had a Black Coach. Was that Coach Sutton? I remember that he was up coaching the entire time calling out directions. I have to reiterate just how sharp the players were. It was crazy.
    I was apart four of the top players from Newark, NJ that went to Victory Christian. By the time we made it to Nationals, I was the only one left. During the game, the cats at Montrose kept asking where I was from. They kept saying, I know you ain’t from North Carolina because of the way our games were.
    When you get a chance, ask Coach Sutton if that was him coaching and if he remembers playing in that tournament in 99 in Tennessee. Peace!

      Yes that was indeed me(Coach Sutton). I actually started three nationally ranked programs(Montrose Christian where we finished 2nd in the nation amongst christian schools. We lost to Central Park in the finals. Then I developed Bishop McNamara where we competed in the WCAC (DeMatha, Gonzaga, Pvi, etc) . Then I left and went to start Montverde Academy from scratch. Spent 8 years building it. In year 4 we won the schools first national title (30-0). I am now the Technical Director of Basketball at IMG Academy.

    Coach what’s your take on reclassing do you think it’s something players should do?

    • @DorianGroup82
      @DorianGroup82  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Varies by situation, skill level and player’s goals. AJ Dybantsa re-classed and rightfully so. His skillset is above where he’s at and he’s on the fast track to the league. It won’t hurt him.
      Cooper Flagg reclassed and he shouldn’t have. For his career earnings, it makes sense cause he gets to the bag faster. But he needs development. And his timeline just got expedited.

    • @DorianGroup82
      @DorianGroup82  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I’ve seen kids above their peers at every age. It all comes down to the ones who play and skill develop the most compared to everyone else in their age group.
      Based on what level I was coaching, some kids are going to be higher priorities than others.
      When I was at MVA, an elite 5th grader isn’t going to monopolize our attention like an elite 10th grader.
      Because we needed to win every game with the best college prospects possible.
      For a middle school coach, he’s going to be all in on the 5th grader.

    Hey Dorian, my brother is freshly 16 years old from Australia. His goal is to be invited to the nba academy (they have been in touch with him), but around now he is starting to get reached out to by some high/prep schools.
    He says if he doesn’t get invited up to the academy he wants to go over to the us to play.
    How do we know if a school is a good program (competition, coaching etc) and if they are the right option [over others] for his development?

    • @DorianGroup82
      @DorianGroup82  ปีที่แล้ว

      Look at how long the coach has been there.
      How long has the school been around?
      How long has the headmaster been there?
      Do they take classes at that school or somewhere else?
      Montverde and IMG are the two most credible right now. Oak Hill has the most history but their program is down. Prolific Prep and La Lumiere are relatively new, but reputable. Every other school is a flash in the pan or not winning at a high enough level.
      EYBL Scholastic is Nike’s high school conference. Most of those schools are solid.
