    I mean, this guy is playing the exact riffs over and over down to the smallest details of how things are picked. Then there was someone switching out humbuckers and setting the guitar up between the tests. They put in some good work into these comparison videos.

    By the way if you have a Sentient pickup and a tone nob on your guitar try turning the tone nob all the way back. You'll get a very Cliff Burton bass guitar like sound when distorted and a good clean bass tone when not distorted.
    Not kidding.
    One of the few pickups that I ever bother tweaking the tone nob for.

    Now that is the most versatile neck pickup out of all of them so far I would say!

    I just put one these in a 90 les paul and it's incredible.It's very articulate, better than any alnico 2 pickup.

    Love this neck pickup in my Les Paul with 50's wiring and Centralab pots (all above 580k).
    Probably the most balanced pickup I've ever owned. I'm still getting used to the Pegasus in the bridge. This is the first guitar that I find myself gravitating more toward the neck pickup than the bridge. There's a lot of air around the notes and when you find the Sweet Spot, It really has a lot of bloom when you are holding and sustaining a note. It also is nice and tight when chugging with a lot of gain.

    Honestly, I only noticed slight differences towards the end there during the comparison? What did you guys notice? BTW props to Seymour Duncan for doing these shootouts. Much appreciated and great gesture to our community.

      The Pearly Gates stuck out the most to me, it sounded like it'd be a good choice for people (like me) who prefer single coils in the neck over humbuckers. The Sentient sounded clinical to me but so does the Dimarzio Air Norton, which most people agree is one of the best neck pickups for high gain, so maybe that's just a compromise that has to be made.

    A lot of thanks to Seymour Duncan for doing these videos. It helps players a lot to decide. A question though, I have a Epiphone les paul custom pro. I wanna change the pickups and I have decided to go with the 59 custom hybrid in the bridge but I am confused about the neck pickup. I have heard a lot of good things about pearly gates for the neck position and I quite like the sentient too. So can anyone help me out. I will use the neck pickups for cleans and smooth solos. I will play blues rock, 80s' rock and a bit heavy metal with this guitar.
    Some help would be appreciated guys.

      +rohit roy Pearly Gates has a specific "bite" in the high mids". It's awesome if you're planning to use middle gain and a lot of dynamics withing blues-rock kind of playing. It can really scream the "texas way". But...if you more into use of high gain leads, then sentien is smoother - a little more balanced and does not boost "the bite" too much when you play on the amp that does it on it's own. From the other side...Sentient works great with 24 fretted guitars. It sorto f give back part of what's been taken off due to nekc pickup placement. Definitely warmer on cleans.

      rohit roy I had that combination you want for a little bit , PG neck & 59 Custom/Hibrid and I didn't really bind with the PG, probably you should try something smoother like a Alnico II pro or even better... a Stag Mag in the neck. Just my $0.02

      For the neck, and for the styles you mention, you might want to check out the Jazz, the Sentient, and (for blues rock), the Whole Lotta Humbucker.

  • @electropentatonic

    I really like the Sentient pickup in my Esp. In fact, it may unseat the Dimarzio liquifire that's been in my main player PRS for about a decade. It can be a little noisier and unforgiving than the Liquifire and that takes a little more effort to control but the attack and cleans are amazing. The Pegasus, however, is another story. Without a doubt, its the worst pickup I've ever played.

    I'd like to put this in the neck position of an Epiphone ES-335. It's a darker sounding guitar and want to add some clarity when using gain, without it becoming shrill. Common suggestions for semi-hollow guitars have been the Duncan 59 or Jazz, however, many say that these could be too bass heavy or too bright. Would the Sentient be a nice hybrid between the two? I use the Epiphone primarily for modern jazz and rock. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    • @seymourduncan

    I'm trying to choose a neck pickup. My main contenders are a sentient, a pearly gates, a 59, or an alnico ii. The bridge will probably be a custom 5, the guitar is a jackson with a mahogany body and a flame maple top, and has a floyd rose, if that makes any difference. Which should I go for? Which would go best with a custom 5? Any help would be most appreciated!

    • @TheIronWord
      @TheIronWord 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are doing exactly what i'm doing, i have all those same pickups and tried them all, the sentient is now in the neck and im using a duncan distortion in the bridge. the clarity blows the custom 5 away. I have the custom 5 in an esp and its getting replaced soon. It's a great pickup but the duncan dostortion does it better, the dimarzio super distortion is right there with the duncan distortion, you can get them on ebay cheap, on another les paul i have the sentient in the neck and a dimarzio super distorion in the bridge. . the mix is incredible, i play classic rock to metal and jazz. and my setup handles it all in perfect harmony, i usually have to compromise and grab this guitar for this tone or grab that guitar, not any more.

    At the moment I'm at University studying music and I only have one electric guitar that I use and absolutely love. The guitar is a Schecter Blackjack ATX, super strat style guitar with two Seymour Blackouts in it.
    I love the pickups for metal and are quite versatile, but I'm looking for something passive, a bit more versatile and less hot than the Blackouts. I'm looking for something that can produce great note definition and can cut it for a metal gig one night and a blues/soul gig the next. Any recommendations? I'm also looking to add a coil tap feature on the bridge and neck

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any 4 conductor pickup can be split (tapping is something else entirely), but you might look at the Sentient/Pegasus combo or the Jazz/Custom combo.

    @Seymour Duncan I know this will come to lots of factors, but how if I mix Invader on the bridge with Sentient in on the neck? I mostly play with Overdrive pedal kicking on an Amp. joe griffin You could always go with a Custom Custom or a Custom 5. They would add warmth and a bit of vintage hotness. However if you’d want more versatility, go with a ‘59 or a Duncan Distortion

    I just bought a Les Paul Studio and want to replace the pickups. I have a strat with a 59 in the neck and JB in the bridge. What pickups would you recommend for my Les Paul that will give me more out put than a 59 and JB.? I play blues,rock with a jamband style. Thanks

    • @seymourduncan
      @seymourduncan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      More output than the 59 would be the Whole Lotta Humbucker (a set sounds great in an LP for jam band stuff). The JB is a really high output pickup, and as you get higher in output (Invader?) you round off the highs, and wind up with a pickup only good for serious gain. I'd go for a lower-than-JB-output for the bridge, though. You'll gain a more touch-sensitive sound that is better for bluesy rock.

    • @mimidavis82
      @mimidavis82 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so the Whole Lotta humbucker will also give clearity and I should put a JB in the bridge? I love high output but I need clearity. Ya know? And thanks for responding.

    Im modding my jackson dinky.
    It has one general tone and one general volume knob.
    Im gonna put a SD sentient/nazgul pickup kit on there and id like to be able to coil split the nazgul.. i dont really need a tone for the sentient.
    So it would just be the coil split(tone) for the nazgul and a general volume knob
    Is this possible and if yes... what do i need for this??

      The Sentient is a lot clearer sounding than the darker Invader. If you like a vastly different tonal change between the neck and bridge, then it will work. Usually, most people like the neck & the bridge to be closer tonally, so I'd recommend the Pegasus or Nazgul..but there are no rules here.
