Hey SwitchUp Family! Here's Part 2 of our series covering the VERY BEST open world games on Switch - here is part 1 incase you missed it: th-cam.com/video/NNVjY8BXE6M/w-d-xo.html | Pre-Order Contra: Operation Galuga today! bit.ly/ContraOG-SwitchUp
I played the Contra: Operation Galuga demo, oh man I can see why Glen loves the series, I really hope he can live some of his Happy Gaming memories in a promised return to form for Contra. Thanks Gents!
My opinion: 1. Best open world adventure game: Zelda BOTW 2. Best open world racing game: Burnout Paradise 3. Best open world sandbox game: Minecraft 4. Best open world action game: Nier Automata 5. Best open world RPG game: Persona 5
Nier was such an experience, it's a philosphical work of art. The first time it came out, I overlooked it because I wasn't into big booty action games; this isn't that at all and honestly I think that design and marketing did it a disservice
Yes, time for more open world goodness! Playing this kind of games in handheld mode is just so satisfying for me 😊 And Dragon Quest Builders 1 and 2 are so enjoyable, loved them both ❤
wait, Outward is coming to switch!?!?!?!?! You just made my day Outward is an underrated masterpiece if you ask me. And the soundtrack is magic : ) It's gonna be a long month waiting haha
You have no idea how hyped I am about outward now. I had no idea. I knew kingdom come was otw but no idea that outward was coming out. Such a great rpg and I've been wondering why they haven't ported it.
@@CYPH3RsD0M41N Me too. I'm already struggling to find room for the Battlefront games, but we've also got two big open world RPGs coming to the Switch in the same month on top of that.
Wow, I remember Kingdoms of Amalur. I gave that game to my cousin many years ago so I wasn't able to play it then. I remember him telling me how he loved playing it so it might be worth trying now.
Nier Automata is in my top five games of all time. I absolutely hate the open world and side missions. My enjoyment of the game skyrocketed once I stopped subjecting myself to the side missions.
Kingdoms of Amalur is one of my favorite games on the Switch! Did a full playthrough as a heavily armored battlemage, now I'm playing again as a glass cannon rogue instead. Good times.
So pleased you mentioned Crosscode! The dungeons are amazing, disgustingly big. One of my favourite games ever. Puzzles are mind boggling but so satisfying once you piece them together.
I know it’s not related to this video, but I want to say thank you for recommending the game HAAK when it was on sale. I have been hooked on Warcraft Rumble(put in a lot of money) but backed out as the devs failed to produce content. Got back on my switch after months and started watching many of the videos I’ve missed. Thank you for recommending this GEM!

Wow some love for Kingdoms of Amalur, it's a pretty good game, CrossCode is also great but, puzzles can be overwhelming sometimes... Overall it's a great game :)
On the next list would love to see games such as: Outer Worlds, Skyrim, Spiritfarer, Dont Starve, Subnautica, Disco Elysium, Octopath Traveller, Immortals Fenyx Rising. Switch has a tremendous number of amazing open world games :D
I check this channel often because I have a real problem with snagging games on switch. Lmao. You guys put me on to Nier: Automata and Astlibra. Two games that are works of art.
Nier has no right looking as good and running as well as it does on switch. What a good port! The games are this list are so good. Crosscode, Nier DQ11, DQ Builders 2, Xeno Games, Amalur, HK, Ni No Kuni, all are must play games
You forgot to mention the most important thing about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. You can mix the three classes tank, rogue and magician (or warlock). And what about Yoku's Island Express❓❓
It was my first time playing Red Dead when i picked it up for the switch, and i couldn't believe i held off on it for so long! Easily one of my favourite games of all time, picked up the 2nd on the Xbox ready for when i complete the 1st.
A lot of nice games in this video and the first part to choose from. Although usually I play open world games in the pc as its easier for me. Switch is the master of roguelikes, platforms and cozy games for sure!
I've got quite a few of these games either already in my backlog or on my wishlist. When am I going to play them though?! Yeah, a few hundred years extra lifetime are definitely going to be needed!
GTA Chinatown wars was also on psp. Would love to see that come to ps+ premium as then it'd be free for me! (I already owned nit digitally on psp). Can't understand why they haven't released another compilation of gta, gta gameboy, gta London, gta 2, gta Chinatown wars, gta liberty city stories & gta vice city stories 🤔
I’m really hoping Kingdom Come Deliverance releases on time in March for the switch! My plan is to play it and Red Dead for the first time after I take the bar exam.
I gave up on Phenotopia or w.e it's called. I couldn't pass a beginning jumping area, kind of sort of like the game journalist that couldn't make the jump in Cuphead.
It’s a rubbish game and the only wiff I attribute to this channel. It’s “difficult” for all the wrong reasons. Not because of well constructed battles or puzzles but because it’s the worst controls/button mapping/input response I’ve ever experienced in a game. Total waste that one was.
I’m not really a big fan of open world games. I usually want a more linear experience. But the two games that really stand out to me are Elden ring, and crystal project. Most other open world games have large swaths of the map that are unrewarding (beyond just looking pretty)…or character progression that’s kind of static, and so it feels like traveling all over the map is just an excuse to waste the player’s time In a massive/ distracting sandbox, with unsatisfying and unnecessary filler/ side quest content crystal project gave me the same feeling that I had when I played elden ring. I was finding new, ACTUALLY useful equipment everywhere. Finding hidden caverns or ways to access new areas was fun. Discovering what job/class you were going to come across next was just great. You were constantly adapting your combat strategy because of the design. And the soundtrack is a fantastic accompaniment to all of it
@@alibabaschultz352 I liked the aesthetic of breath of the wild, but I did not enjoy the gameplay loop. I don’t really view it as a masterpiece, personally. I understand I’m in the minority with that opinion…but that was my point, really (I don’t enjoy most open world games). I just didn’t feel satisfied exploring that world. It feels big and empty to me. Unrewarding combat/ character progression that gets stale pretty quickly. I thought there were way too many shrines, and most of them were not challenging in any way. And the reward for doing them was just more health and stamina…..boring. I just preferred the old zelda formula (they used to feel a bit more like a metroidvania) Elden ring on the other hand…everything just had such a sense of mystery to it. It was so fun discovering every hidden cave and location. Cool items/spirits/weapons everywhere you looked. Great character progression with a lot of opportunity for customization. It was moody and beautiful, with a ton of cool characters and interesting lore. I didn’t feel like I was ever doing a silly side quest, fetch quest, or a task that would reward me with something useless. It did nearly everything right
@@EtienneTC It sounds like you have a bias toward the old Zelda formula. All of the things you liked about Eldin, Botw did first. Botw was the first open world game completely designed around the open world. Previous games (GTA, Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed, etc) were regular games, placed in a big sandbox for no reason. The entire point of Botw IS the world itself. Its primary focus is exploration and survival. Eldin Ring is amazing, because it took so many notes from Botw.
@@alibabaschultz352 oh I definitely have a bias/ preference for the older Zelda formula. It’s just how I prefer to experience my games. Less time wasted. I just didn’t feel much satisfaction exploring Botw’s world. Character progression is really important to me. I like nuanced systems, creating ‘builds’ for my characters etc. I just didn’t feel I got any of that with BOTW. The world was definitely pretty, but there wasn’t enough variety/ mystery for me. I’ve played so many open world games that I eventually just got really fatigued. If I’m running around just for the sake of it, it’s just not enough for me. I did kind of like Witcher 3 now that I think about it. But while witcher 3 has a gorgeous world and soundtrack etc, it does unfortunately fall into the same category as botw for me in many ways. Lots of filler content and combat that I find kind of stiff and unrewarding
It depends on the game, but I think open world games have more longevity to them. Like more reasons to keep playing it and not just delete the game once you're done to make room for other stuff. If it's an open world RPG like Skyrim or Kingdoms of Amalur, there's more reasons to go around and explore the world to find something you might have missed. But then there's games like Bioshock or Darksiders where the progress is mostly linear but they still give you the option to go back to the areas that you've already cleared, even if there's nothing to do but collect items you missed and kill the same enemies over and over. That's when I've got to make room once I'm done, no matter how much I might have enjoyed the game.
Except for the Xenoblade series, I own the physical versions of every one of these. The problem is I hardly have the time to play them due to work! I’ll say that I really want to play Neir: Automata tonight after watching your video, though. Or maybe CrossCode?
Love me an open world game! I would pick up a few more, but i counted my games last night and I'm at 396! I've completed 5 or more! The wife is gonna kill me lads 😅😭 Speaking of Xenoblade, i wish they would port Xenonlade Chronicles X across, such a great game. Anyways great content as always.👍🏻
Thanks for the video I defo wanna check out red factor and the nier games now! And tbh out if all the switch games dragon quest 2 is my all time favourite game i really think u should give it a go if you haven't already for sure. Thanks for the vid Mark and Glen as always see yaaa
I've wanted to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for ages... But I'm not brave enough to face the LENGHT this game is supposed to have 😂 How many hours are you in, Mark? Longer than Zelda botw or totk?
I still don't understand how they messed up so much with the GTA Trilogy. It could have been so great... I'm still hoping for some sort of new bundle like a "GTA Portable Trilogy" including GTA Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories and China Town Wars.
Quick Guide to Kingdoms of Amalur for higher skilled players: - Do only main quests and faction quests and a hand full of smaller quests or else you will be very over powered. Most of the side quests and stories are extremely bland anyway. - Half way through the game you'll pick the desert realm or grassy planes realm. Experience one fully - literally run through the other one skipping all non essential fights or you will be over powered. - Don't use healing potions - rush unlocking the healing spell then build your character as you wish. Use as many mana potions as you want. Super underrated game and I think combat is great if you go the finesse/magic combo route or mono build either. 80% of the side quests are rubbish and over leveling is an issue.
@@charlieg6913 There are a couple of fun bosses to fight in the side quests. 1) Earlier in the start of the game you'll find a village that's darker and has spider monsters. Follow the the side quest for that village, find the castle, fight a fun boss. 2) I can't remember exactly where in the game but you'll want to find the cave with the fae/elf hunter. Great boss to fight.
Great video, I do enjoy open world games, some on your list I hadn't really considered open world but some good choices. It'll be interesting to see your review of Contra. Demo Suffering from controller lag and stuttering 30fps according to Switch Corner, and way overpriced 😢
I'm a sucker for a good open world game, especially when I can play it on the Switch. Edit: Funny you mention Ready Player One, I just watched it on TV a hour ago.
Love classic RPGs but I can't really play them anymore. Too time consuming. But I'd really love to play Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Xenoblade and Ni No Kuni. Cheers.
You're surely going to catch hell for not playing all the Xenoblade games. :P A quick warning before you start XC3 - it's much better than the other games at making the side quests feel like they're part of the story, which makes for a great experience. But it also does make the game feel a lot longer if you don't force yourself down the critical path.
I'm currently playing a very therapeutic Open World Game on Switch. Maneater.. 6 hours in and still not bored of eating people off Unicorn inflatables.
I got most of my games after seeing ur reviews and i like most of em . Kingdom of amalur remind me of those old books where u toss a dice ,u got data to write on a page, and at every decision u take u re sent to this page or this one for another decision, it reminded me of the first one i read about a guilde of thieves in a dark fantasy world...really old school.Altho, xenoblade 3 was disappointing 4 me.,the combat especially.... Does monster hunter stories have a story, or is it arena or just fights, like in monster hunter rise? Any1 knows?
Controversial opinion but I thought Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was much better than 1. In the first game you are just inundated with quest markers for fetch quests and the combat has barely any depth. Where as in 2 they improved everything, yeah the combat was complicated but when you worked it out and it all clicked it was amazing some of the larger battels at the end especially.

Thanks for the video I defo wanna check out red factor and the nier games now! And tbh out if all the switch games dragon quest 2 is my all time favourite game i really think u should give it a go if you haven't already for sure. Thanks for the vid Mark and Glen as always see yaaa
Love me some open-world games thanks guys see ya!
I've wanted to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3 for ages... But I'm not brave enough to face the LENGHT this game is supposed to have 😂 How many hours are you in, Mark? Longer than Zelda botw or totk?
I got Red faction on sale for the grand price of £1.99 so how ever the game was rated it's a BarJan in my book
I still don't understand how they messed up so much with the GTA Trilogy. It could have been so great...
I'm still hoping for some sort of new bundle like a "GTA Portable Trilogy" including GTA Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories and China Town Wars.
Quick Guide to Kingdoms of Amalur for higher skilled players:
- Do only main quests and faction quests and a hand full of smaller quests or else you will be very over powered.
Thanks for the heads up. Haven't ever played this and about to start. Very good to know. 👍
@@goobatroopa_ Awesome! Thanks again!
Monster Hunter Stories 2 is really really good, and a big recommendation for me.
In your first part, I had played most of the games. In this one I have not and I am taking notes. Lol
Lil Gator! My son love this game!
Wow contra 8 whole stages? Wow
Kingdom come deliverance!! ⚔️
I haven’t played any of the dragon quest games but always thought they were interesting games.
Konami sponsor! Way to go!!
I think I’m going to try Monster Hunter Stories 2, motivated by Mark’s daughter. Perhaps after I’ve got Xenoblade?
so many quality picks
Skill checks in Phenotopia are bonkers. Couldn't get more than an hour or two in 😢
I think silvano is hilarious 😄
Love classic RPGs but I can't really play them anymore. Too time consuming.
But I'd really love to play Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, Xenoblade and Ni No Kuni.
Cheers.
Cross Code is still in my backlog. The day will come 😀 there are just too many games
Ni No Kuni 2 is better than people said -- but its performance is brutal late game. Seems to correlate with building the town up, which is a shame.
Has the switchup code expired? Will it be coming back?
What about Skyrim and Borderlands series?
You're surely going to catch hell for not playing all the Xenoblade games. :P A quick warning before you start XC3 - it's much better than the other games at making the side quests feel like they're part of the story, which makes for a great experience. But it also does make the game feel a lot longer if you don't force yourself down the critical path.
I'm well in to Xenoblade 3 yeah it's massive haha. Mark
You’re saving No Man’s Sky for part 3 of this open world games list right?
Any1 knows?
I still can't beat Hollow Knight...😅, still love it though
Controversial opinion but I thought Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was much better than 1. In the first game you are just inundated with quest markers for fetch quests and the combat has barely any depth. Where as in 2 they improved everything, yeah the combat was complicated but when you worked it out and it all clicked it was amazing some of the larger battels at the end especially.
I believe the city you were looking for in GTA 3 is New Donk City. You are welcome ;)
New Donk City is from Super Mario Odyssey. GTA III takes place in Liberty City.
