Scary to think that the sheer velocity of the winds can attenuate sound waves themselves. Sound can get distorted, the frequency of the waves can be pulled and stretched, waves can get scattered and dissipate - so much so that you might not even hear a tree snap right behind you, before it's too late.

Winds can uproot trees at much lower speeds (there are a few factors that can contribute to a tree's vulnerability/susceptibility to being uprooted. One example is, is it can depend upon how saturated the ground was...or also if the ground has been very dry due to drought also. )
He looked away because he didn’t want to get debris in his eyes, in a situation like that it’s hard to keep the camera steady while you have random small objects flying at your face.

That's a microburst or possible derecho. Tornadoes don't look like this or even have this kind of strength so immediately. There's no cyclonic motion either. If a tornado was coming for him, wouldn't he focus on the tornado coming at him with the camera? I'm just saying...if you have the documented occasion, location, and time of it...that would help a lot. A lot of people confuse this sort of thing often.

Although very unusual he'd be outside when a EF3 tornado was literally nearly right on top of him...my assumption is due to the angles of him shooting with his cameraphone, as to why the gusts look straight-lined is because he was actually directly in the RFD from the side.
