I've been in Malta three times and every time I admire its magnificent limestone cliffs and ancient cities like Valletta. Every time I stayed in cheap hostels in St.Julians. The price for the night was around 18 euro per night as far as I remember. And I bought all the food from nearest supermarket and prepared it in hostel's kitchen. Also the nearby island of Gozo used to be my #1 to visit when the famous ''Azure window'' was in tact.

I'm from Malta, and I can tell you with all honesty that we have some awesome places to visit ,we are generally very friendly and kind but beware not all are the same character, arrogance is increasing with some people, traffic can be literally HELL with some disobeying traffic rules completely, concrete tower monsters with cranes all over are a common site ,we have restaurants to be proud of but choose wisely before deciding to dine. Do not miss GOZO our sister island which is less hectic but in summer can be a hellish place due to people visiting it. Comino is awesome but again expect overcrowding in the summer months. Hope you enjoy if you decide to visit the island.

Dear Gabriel, for the reader's information that old building which is a small fort is called 'It-Torri ta' Santa Marija' in Maltese or also known as the Comino Tower , which is a large bastioned watchtower on the island of Comino in Malta. It was built by the Knights of St.John in 1618, the fifth of six Wignacourt towers spreaded around the Islands of Malta and Gozo. More recently it was also in the film the 'Count of Monte Cristo' in 2002 as the ' Chateau d'If' . The film was directed by Kevin Reynolds and starred Richard Harris, James Caviezel, Dagmara Dominczyk, Guy Pearce and Luis Guzman.....

Malta is a historical site with amazingly preserved towns and villages. It is however NOT a beach or party destination. Every traveler needs to do a bit of research before coming to a place. Also, like everywhere at the med, July and August are too busy to properly enjoy Malta. Nothing beats the sweet and mellow climate and atmosphere you have in May, October and November. These are the best months to visit Malta.

    • @briantravelman
      @briantravelman ปีที่แล้ว +1

Most people would disagree about it not being a party destination. In fact, that's the biggest complaint I hear from visitors to the island, is that there is TOO MUCH partying. I agree though that it's certainly not a beach destination. I visited in late October and it was still very crowded. The island is a history lover's paradise, I will agree, but it's so expensive and there are people and buildings EVERYWHERE! There's almost no empty space on the island, to just get away from it all and be out in nature. I imagined Malta very differently. I expected it to have this exotic, untouched vibe, and it did to a certain extent, but it also had the vibe of a stereotypical vacation destination.

Gabriel, I know that the fictional seaside village of Popeye (1980 starring Robin Williams) was filmed in Malta and it is still there. Btw, I've researched, years ago, that the Maltese vocabulary is comprised of about 50 Italian/Sicilian and has an Arabic syntax. When I heard the Maltese language it sounded Arabic with a twist of Italian.

There were very few people at the Blue Lagoon back then. If you swam to the ocean side of the Blue Lagoon, there was a tube, approx. 10m long and 1m diameter that you could swim down when the water was still.
Malta was also dirtier, noisier, and more polluted, and in Valletta, there were cats everywhere.

Cisk Lager, award-winning, iconic Maltese beer and flagship brand of the Farsons Brewery is celebrating its 90th birthday this year with a number of planned public events around Malta and Gozo and limited-edition packaging marking this milestone.
Cisk was launched in 1929 after Scicluna's Bank took over the operations of one of its clients who was granted a temporary exclusive licence to manufacture Pilsner and Munchener type beers. The company became known as The Malta Export Brewery.
The story of Cisk however, started much earlier than that, when Malta's first privately-owned bank was established by Giuseppe Scicluna in 1840.

this video caught my eye because I traveled to Malta in the early 2000's (in January) and absolutely LOVED it. It wasn't crowded... I do hate crowds so I think I won't want to visit during the summer. When we went to Gozo and Comino we took a ferry and saw ancient temples and old catacombs. Such a fascinating place. Your video inspires me to go take a hike and then jump into the water, that must have been amazing too. On the main island of Malta, there used to be these colorful painted buses that would take you all around the island, so easy and fun. I hear they shut those down. I wonder how it is now. I'll be back some day!

The Blue Lagoon was a nice quiet place, with a few boats. in 2018 by 9am is was packed with 6-7 boats an hour arriving. There was a queue of people maybe 50-60- people who were climbing down the steps into the water, taking a bunch of selfies and then getting out. I still love it there and I love diving there but it's become VERY touristy.

By then most of the tourists have left with the exception of the over 65s who chose to spend the British winter months in sunnier climes. We hired a car and seen everything we set out to see and do in the 10 days we were there. Thank you in Italian is Grazie pronounced grazje in Maltese Grazzi , a minor difference. Also that cool little fort in Comino was used in the (2002) the Count of Monte Cristo. The best way to enjoy Comino in peak season is to book a boat trip to Comino assuring that they stay there allowing you to use the boat as a base of sorts. Thus avoiding the sardine packing. Again nice video, balanced view and very factual.

Malta is amazing. Just come back from two weeks there. Main Malta is busy and lots of building works going on. Lots of agricultural produce with tomatoes, greens and strawberries. Malta is very green in February with the weather being a nice 20 to 25 degrees and in high season is turns brown and dusty.
Gozo now is what main Malta was 20 years ago with very quiet roads and amazing buildings and views.
We would not recommend getting a hire car in main seasons as Malta has a big car problem and parking is allowed in a white box but it's hard to find one.
Hire car, goto to the Gozo ferry and travel around Gozo by car as much quieter and no white box restrictions.
Good is expensive on Malta generally due to most things being imported but the local Pasizzis are only around 80 cents and come in two flavours of cheese or pea.
Would recommend the green or red bus tours as they are very good to see alot if Malta can give you and off season they tend to discount these tours due to less people.
Also we get the €22 Tallinga bus ticket which allows you unlimited bus travel for seven days (day and night) and this card also works on the Gozo buses 👍
Highly recommend Valletta, Madina and Gozo.
There are lots of coastal walks around, off the beaten track if you like walking Malta can accommodate you.
All in all, Malta is a beautiful island and a ton of history. Loved it.

The Golden Bay Area is actually very nice and less packed. When I went, there were few people in the beaches (as there are a few you have to walk to). Water was amazing and there were views for days. Also, there’s a sunset horse-back riding company nearby that has a tour for 2.5 hours for only 30 Euro’s. A steal!

Re drinking water, before they used to have wells which used to fill up with the rain.
On a general note Malta is made of sedimentary rock, which you sometimes see quite well in some shots of the cliffs. One of the layers is non porous (water doesn't go through it) which means fresh rain water rests there. Before, we used to have boreholes and suck up the water from them. However, due to illegal boreholes there isn't much water left in the water table.
Also there is a farmer who lives on Comino, he is the only person who lives there, and does manage to grow crops.

The Maltese archipelago is more then these beautiful Mediterranean waters and more a story of a small sympathetic & courageous group of people struggling to survive & achieve self-determination in a very hot natural & geopolitical environment. In reference to the question made by the host regarding what the Maltese did for freash water (apart from wells) you may need to visit places like Ta’ Kandja caves in Siggiewi, Wignacourt Aqueduct built by the Knights of St John or the Roman Aqueducts in Gharb Gozo.
Also, Malta does have many waterways but unfortunately for transportation conveniences & a lack of understanding on how important they were for the islands ecological system the authorities at various times built infrastructures like roads negativity effecting their conectivity and flow. Triq il Wied Ta L-Msida & Marsaskala's Triq Wied il Ghajn are some obvious examples of how Malta's waterways have been effected.
If anyone wishes further comprehension on how the Maltese lived and used their water supplies visit some valleys (Wied) like Bidnija's Wied Għajn Mula (Mula Spring Valley), Wied Għajn Riħana (Riħana Spring Valley), Mosta's Wied il-Għasel (Honey Valley) or the Wetland at l-Għadira or Qawra bay salini.
Time permitting please try to visit Vittoriosa (Birgu) for their festa between the 8th &10th of August, the craftsmanship and street decorations are exquisite & the fortified city is drenched with a rich character and history. Senglea (Isla) and Kalkara are also defiantly worth your time wondering around trying to perceive what life was like in a bygone era.

I totally LOVED my time in Malta for the sheer history, ruins, catacombs, cathedrals and local food!
Luckily the tourist hordes stay in certain areas of Malta for the most part. I still recommend staying in the St. Julians area tho just for the fact that there are more budget friendly food options and that it's one of the best areas to get on and off the bus to Valletta or pretty much anywhere else without running the risk of the bus not stopping because it's already over capacity.
I highly recommend the St. Paul's Catacombs in Ir-Rabat, much more impressing than the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum which is rather underwhelming compared to many of the other sights in Malta and hunting for a ticket and then being their for your time slot takes up an entire day. I saw you walk past the St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, definitely worth visiting! For food I can't recommend Maxokk Bakery in In-Nadur on Gozo enough for the Gozo style Ftira, a traditional Maltese style pizza that starts at 5 Euros. I made a condensed video with lots of 'how to' and other practical info + of course filmed the whole thing. Btw. if you go down where all the people were lying under the umbrellas at the Blue Lagoon you can actually wade through the water and get to the rock formation on the other side. I'm 6'1" and just held my stuff over my head. On the other side there is even a stretch of sandy beach where you can chill and relax.

    Hi Gabriel!
You should definitely spend a few days in Gozo. I think it's not so fair to allocate just a few hours to this beautiful island. I always prefer Gozo to the main island, the atmosphere it's more relax, less touristy, it's more like the countryside of Malta.
Besides Victoria, you should visit Xlendi and from there you can go for a nice trek to Sanap cliffs which are spectacular.
You can also find some nice, less crowded beaches, you should try San Blas beach which also involves a nice hike. You can also trek to Tal-Mixta Cave and from there, down to Ramla beach (which is the main beach in Gozo).
I've visited Malta 4 times, so I've done my homework :)
By the way, you should avoid that local Cisk beer, it's really bad
    :D
