The movie remake never captured the gallows humor that gave this production the relief it needed. That takes true acting pros. Brilliant performance.

The movie never tried to be a comedy. I think both products are radically different and should be considered as two stories completely apart from each other.

@@zoroack792 Agreed, the movie remake seemed to want to capture the darker and grim aspect of the story.

I think the movie was good for its own reasons, being a film adaptation after all. But wholeheartedly agree that their laughs and their jokes is what was missing in the movie. It's the best part of the song!

The best pair. They are both so gleefully demented!
“Shepherd’s pie peppered with actual shepherd on top!!” Probably my favorite Sondheim lyric of all time.

“ gleefully demented-“ perfectly described! Thanks, Jennifer. Fantastic!
I was gloriously blessed enough to have seen them both in person, in a preview of Sweeney Todd, 1979. I’m telling you. Watching this now, the memories are all flooding back. They were indescribably brilliant through the whole show. The power. The impact. That huge cast… That magnificent orchestra. Well. I’m telling you. You ( I) could barely breathe, watching and hearing this show. - almost INCREDIBLE. 🌟🌟🌠♥️💗❤️🙏🏼🌲🦅🏅. Reston peace, magnificent Stephen Sondheim

Having played Sweeney I will tell you this: going from Pretty Women, to The Epiphany to A Little Priest is the most frantic, crazy and challenging transition I ever experienced on stage! The last twenty minutes of the first act are quite possible the most challenging given the range, physicality and stamina required, of any musical ever! It’s quite the wild ride!!!

I said this before and I'll say it again. Angela owned this role. When I watch her I get the trill of seeing genius running through my blood that the others (talented as they are) just can't recreate.

I saw somewhere that this role really hurt Len’s voice, and I can see why! On the cast album it just sounded almost naturally gruff, but now that I hear this from the actual show, I can tell he’s really straining!

The way Angela says here “Well he drank. It’s a bank cashier.” Is by far the subtlest and funniest way I have ever heard her say it. I laughed out loud.

Yes, isn’t she DIVINE ?!?! The memories are all flooding back to me now… I was sooooo fortunate to have seen them both when the show was still in previews …. in that magnificently huge, cavernous Gershwin ( back then, still called the Uris? , I believe?) Theatre on W. 50th St. …. March, 1979.
      NEVER shall I forget ….

Just rewatched tonight after hearing about her passing, and it struck me the choices she made--without that sweetness and sort of cloying vulnerability the show might have been nearly unwatchable: an assault on capitalism rather than an unsettling, unforgettable parable about it.
She trusted her audience to make up their own minds, and even more importantly, gave them what they paid for: a hell of a show.
    Bravo, Auntie Mame. RIP

What a crime that Len Cariou's performance was never captured professionally. No one matched him. I saw this production twice. The second time was the night before they both departed. They ... and the audience ... were laughing so hard that they added several minutes to the song.

Ohhhhh .. Thank you SO very much for ( mysteriously)- wink* 😉👍👍 🏅) taping - and then posting this, Matthew!
They are so sublimely, superbly and delightfully PERFECT together, eh?! … I was blessed enough to have seen the original… Angela and Len… In a preview… In fact, the song in which the judge is flagellating himself was still in the show, at that point… They kept it on the original cast album, but they removed it from the show… I did get to see that. I also got to see - and HEAR! 🏅 ❤️ Len Cariou play King Lear, at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, when he was still in his 30s !! 1976. I was 16. Ravishing.
How blessed, lucky and fortunate am I, eh? 🥰
-- I could watch this over and over and over. Angeles happy little dances… Their quite perfect enunciation… The absolute glory, the beauty of the depths of Lynn Carius masculine, Sooo-gloriously resonant baritone, back then… They gave us so much. I am so grateful to you for posting this. The memories are all flooding back to me here ….
Ultimate masters of their crafts; True titans they were.
Rest in honored, MAGNIFICENT, Sweet Peace and POWER, so mysteriously transcendent… He grew up surviving such unspeakable pain, emotionally, as we know… Stephen Sondheim. 🦅 🌲 🏆 🌟🌠🎆🌅. ♥️ You gave the World untold riches.
Gratefully, VCH & Midlantic Theatre Co., Newark, NJ 💗 🎭 🎵😍
