  • It's time to reveal which elements this shiny block of metal from my previous video is made of. Link to previous video here: • Exotic Elements vs. Ma...
You guys sent so many guesses that I learned about alloys I didn't know off myself :) Once again thanks to all that participated! The CuBe-alloy seems to be quite unknown but has a lot of practical uses. Beryllium-copper even has the highest strength of any copper alloy we know off!
Closed captions in English and Danish coming soon...

Beryllium copper is also used in space and other applications where it might be subject to cryogenic temperatures. This is because it has decent mechanical properties but most importantly it has a high heat conductivity at cryogenic temperatures. This is good because the same mechanism that transports heat, quantum vibrations of the crystal lattice called phonons, is also the same mechanism that transports stress. So it isn't brittle at very cold temperatures.

  • @HighlanderNorth1

I would have guessed bismuth, mainly because it appeared to have that slight pinkish hue. But it's also possible that the pinkish hue was just a reflection off of the large copper bar nearby. Apparently I missed the "alloy" description in the original video. That would have precluded pure bismuth.

I work with beryllium daily. the dust is carcinogenic, yes, but the solid metal is fine to hold in your hands. Also, berylliosis doesn't affect everyone. You can take a blood test to check your sensitivity to the metal.
It's a very pretty metal, though. Until you let humidity oxidize it and turn it gray.

Very cool as usual. Speaking of unusual alloys used in musical instruments- do you know about argentium? It's a relatively recent silver alloy, with copper (as usual) but also a bit of germanium. The germanium makes it more resistant to oxidation and also improves its tensile strength, which can be increased by heat treating. I've got argentium strings I drew myself on my double harp.

Try to mix 86% copper with 8 % tin and 4 % germanium, this would be like a CuSn8 tin bronze but with total corrosion resistance given by germanium. Don't put more than 4% germanium or more than 10 % tin. If you mix it make a video showing if it has become corrosion resistant or not. I am Kedves Szabolcs from Transylvania, it was my idea to use bronze alloys for watches, but they corrode.

Beryllium copper hammers are available (explosion proof hammers since they don't make hot sparks). I don't know of any easy way of testing for beryllium. Tools using beryllium copper are often marked BECU or CuBe, but I can't guarantee they are all marked.

(an alloy is a mixture of metalic elements).
Gallium is also silver, but can become greyish (kinda like lead) when impure.. it also becomes a liquid at 29.76 °C.. ie, just above room temperature.
I was wrong too BTW, I was going to say iridosmine or Osmiridium, I wrongly guessed that the alloy in question was a mixture of Osmium, Copper and Gold.
