  • This nice old AJS was brought in because it would not start. It turned out the pushrods were over adjusted and holding the valves open and setting them correctly restored compression. It was still reluctant to start, however and this was down to a resistor type spark plug making life hard for the magneto. Fitting of an 'ordinary' spark plug sorted the problem and the engine now starts and runs fine.

    I've been following your tours of the lovely green Welsh countryside and tracking your journeys on Google maps as well. In Australia it's just brown and barren here as the drought is threatening to shut down a few towns on NSW and Queensland, so the colour green is like therapy to me. I sent a mate a few of these trips and hope he finds it as much fun as I did.

    Paul Henshaw Much Obliged for the ride. This is the same year model as i was hatched in. Something about the 50's that was pure post war pleasure that was design-fully etched during those days. These year models are what's kept me sedated to today's cookie cutter computer technologies. Whether out on my 1950 5 widow Chevy Pickup, 59 Apache big window short bed fleet side, or 68 Triumph Trophy Sports... i like to quip to any admirers while out on them... "Yep! Just 1 more payment and it's all mine... but i never know that payment price till it's next breakdown!" Cheers!! from Cow-town Texas!

      Thanks, William, I am glad you enjoyed the ride, there are a number of Trophies - 500 and 650 featured in my videos, doing a similar route, which you might like to take a look at. Regards, Paul.

      Martin Cvitkovich Stuff available today was not dreamed of in the 50s. Yes it's a wonderful motorcycle, until something gets in front and you want to stop. Look at the front brake.

    holy shit, you are really making the old girl trot!! And she certainly does respond to your commands...... you have her in the "Buttery" zone the whole outing. Very, very nicely done Mr Paul. I myself own a 54 500 single in Australia for last 25 years, but dont feel my old girl could cope with that kinda giddy-up!! maybe iv'e been too soft on her.....
    Pleasure to watch mate.

    Just as well this bloke knows where he's going with all those hedges narrow lanes, half expected a highwayman to jump out, "stand and deliver" My father in law recently passed and in 1948 he bought a Matchless 500 paid NZ 200 pounds unfortunately some years later the bike was damaged beyond repair. We have the original ownership registration papers. he would have enjoyed your video, helmet cam, riding with and on the Matchless. I tip my hat to you Sir thank you.

    Very rare as they were nearly all swinging arm frames by '52. Once had a '46 500, vibrated really badly above '50 as I think they used a 350 bottom end for that year. Had John Bull tyres and a seat I subsequently understood to have had a battery sat upon. After every time I rode the bike in the damp my jeans came out of the wash ruined with very large holes.....

    With all of the roads marked slow into languages you can see why the 500 single and the 650 twin from the various British manufacturers are the most that the roads can handle, big high speed motorcycles with high horsepower engines are way overkill for the roads in England.

    Hi Paul, another good video. After owning many Triumphs and BSAs over the last 40 odd years, I'm rebuilding a 49 AJS 350. A bit of advice required. What should the magneto drive chain deflection be ? The manual states it should be " J " What does J refer to ? 1/4 inch on the drive side of the chain ? Any advice welcomed. Mac.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, glad you like the video, Mac! I would find the tightest spot in the chain and adjust for about 1/4 inch free play at that point. Hope that helps, cheers, Paul.
