Jim had such a beautiful innocent heart. That line "funny thing there used to be a time when that was enough" gets me every time. way better than these soulless people these days just trying to steal your time and lie to get rich themselves.

So agree. Sitcoms don't usually add new characters until ratings start to sag, but such was this character, played by this actor, that an exception to the norm brought him in the second season. Such a great show.

Certainly in the top few. There is a single scene in Friends, which is actually more moving than this one though.
It would have helped if this clip had the part before it where Elaine talks about giving up on her dreams, so the castle reference makes more sense, but for those of us who know the episode, it's very special.

There’s a lovely scene in Cheers where the Coach compares his daughter to his wife, her mother. It’s a gift., as is this. This kind of writing and these characters are identifiable in us. And it shows everyone has a dream that’s worth dreaming, even if it is never fulfilled.

I am glad I was a teenager living through that time and got to watch the majority of these shows and at the time I remember that these ere "just TV shows" and they weren't really that meaningful. I was wrong. These shows taught me that it was really nice to do good things for people and that in the case of MASH ... war is really stupid.

Takes me back to 8 or 9 years old, our small den in Livonia, Michigan we used to pile into to watch tv. A 'Classy guy' is, in the minds of some women, a chump - someone who is naive and can be used up and discarded like a paper cup. It seems to be some form of self-validation for them; literally, the only way can they can feel good about themselves up by tearing others down.
I'm no 'grand prize', I'll freely admit, but I've always - ALWAYS - done my best to treat the women in my life with respect and understanding. And I've always ended up bleeding (on some occasions, very literally) from it. And, I too, have noticed that they tended to 'move on' to someone who treats them as badly as they treated me.

Funny how a lot of people think "there used to be a time when that was enough" is about society, when it's probably about how Jim himself has deteriorated over the years. Earlier in the episode, he says that Elaine's secret admirer "probably writes better than he looks... talks... is." He knows he has loads of problems, and he knows it's because of how he's mistreated himself through years of drug abuse. That's the real tragedy of Jim: he isn't just an unlucky nice guy, he's fully aware that his own actions have made him a total burnout, but he could never get addiction off his back.

Maybe she was the most shallow, but she delivered the most positive gesture to a severe alcoholic who without doubt would’ve wrecked her life if she humored him beyond this point. With scripted TV, anything is possible, but I think this ending was as positive as one could’ve been. Anything more, would’ve insulted the average intelligence.
