Shine. Madonna's tour manager asked Def Jam if Run-DMC could open on her tour. But they were unwilling to pay the $20,000 per show that Run-DMC wanted. So, Russell Simmons said that the Beastie Boys (who opened for Run-DMC) were available for $500/show. They agreed, and that's how it worked out. It wasn't really about white privilege. It was financial.

    • @palmsquad4
      @palmsquad4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Exactly. Plus they also wanted Fat Boyz, and Russell lied (pretending to actually be their manager [they assumed he was their manager, lo]). Getting them on Madonnas tour was one of Russell Simmons’ genius moves.

This was also in the documentary. They were cheap and Madonna was pretty new so didn't have the money she has these days. $500 a night for Beasties where Run DMC was $20k!

@@jasonmiracle7516 People also forget she came up in the late 70's NYC punk scene with them and did shows together back then. She went pop just as they changed thier sound also. Nothing to do with WP, it was friends helping friends

Random story... When I was kid back in the early 80s, I had a Mad Magazine. In it was a line I will never forget. The biggest problem kids of the future will have is to find music loud enough to annoy parents that grew up listening to the Beastie Boys. And you're dead on with the money privilege.

Shine. I'm 52 now, father of 3. My eldest boy a hip hop fanatic started out on a diet of Public enemy and the Beastie Boys. My youngest is two and a half, he really loves to cut some moves to intergalactic. Beasties were vital to the evolution of this hip hop culture that is so important to so many people. Love, peace respect.

    Shine.
First I just feel I really do need to say this about this media concept of -white privilege- by pointing out a rough quote by DR Dre when asked why he wanted to produce Eminem and his reason... "there are 400 million people in the United States and roughly 18% are black ,9% other and 75% white. There is an awful lot more poor white people out there than black that can relate to this kids trailer park rap" and that is my sales target.
    Whatcha want. Epic
I agree with your 90%. I'm 52. I literally grew up with this group and the entire hiphop scene as it expanded on the east coast from GMFlash and The Furious Five, Sugarhill, Whodini, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, LL Cool J, RUN DMC. I don't care if your black or white .This is Hiphop. Recognize.
These guys put in the work, the time and the effort to change music forever. Everyone now, owes these guys respect from Papa and Puff to Eminem to Lil Wayne to Run The Jewels to Gramatic and on and on.
The whole Madonna thing was about money, Beasties were available and cheap AND had street cred not only in the burgeoning hiphop scene but as a group and headliners for other groups from the same CBGB scene that Madonna came from before she went pop. THAT is why they got the gig. Its far to easy to just slap white privilege on everything because somebody is white. We as human beings can do better than than see in just black and white, yellow and brown. I posit NWA as an example; Dr Dre had white privilege because he had access to money? Definitely not. Money IS privilege, regardless of skin tone. The world is a bit more grey than the media tries to paint it. Don't believe the Lies. Open your eyes and look and listen. Favorite line in any rap song ever; ("Where did you get your information from? Are you gonna front when revelation comes?") I urge all people to use the grey in their heads to think past color. Put in the work. Put in the effort. Make magic.
I for one believe in the -Dream.
    God bless.

Mad respect, 100% facts. Rap, hip hop in this area, we're the best of the best. I miss the old school good old days. Young people will never be blessed to grow up in the time we did. I'm 48, I would give up the rest of my days. To be able to go back for a couple of years. Things were much simpler back then, much more relaxed and kind!!!

Here, In Europe, in the 80s-90s, BBs were literally ignored by the Black Hip Hop community. I am happy that the sons of these people of my time are starting to take an interest in the BB and recognize their talent.

Back in the early/mid 90s, Beastie Boys toured under the name ‘Quasar’ & played sets made up of hardcore punk covers & their own hardcore songs. Let’s just say, so many people turned up at shows expecting a regular Beastie Boys show….only to find the sets missing all of their rap songs.
I was fortunate enough to see them live on several occasions (In The Round Tour & Reading Festival’98 being two of the best) & they were always on point!!!
The Beastie Boys Book is well worth a read.

That's kind of what set them apart. They were this punk hip hop band that no one had ever seen the likes of. And they didn't just perform it, they lived it. They were a completely unique band that bridged two worlds that ushered in an entirely new generation and they never compromised themselves in the name of making it.

I love all the Beastie Boys' music but what I really love about them is how they navigated the early and mid nineties while staying true to themselves. What was going on at that time in the rock world was completely insane. Everything from Prince Living Color to Metallica to Nirvana to Rancid to Green Day to the SKA revolution to Rage Against The Machine to freakin' Stone Temple Pilots and Beck.
    The 90s were nuts.
I listen to lots of music. My favorite era is the "the" bands from the early 2000s. The Hives, The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Kings of Leon. There was about a billion of them and many of them were really really good. Completely uninfluenced by the 90s, and more to the root of rock and roll.
Still listening to the Beasties in 2021 though. Lol

Madonna's managers wanted Run DMC to open for her, but Def Jam wanted $250k a show for Run DMC. They then asked for the Fat Boys and Def Jam said they weren't available, then offered the Beastie Boys at $500 a show. On top of the cheap per show price, Madonna and the Beastie Boys were friends through the New York music scene.
If you're interested in more in depth story on the Beasties, check out the No Dogs in Space pod cast. They did a 6 part pod cast on the B-Boys that is amazing.

edit: I had an aunt who was a couple years older than me and her sister who was my age, & I spent a lot of weekends at their house. My older aunt would have MTV on when she and her best friend were hanging out, and the two bands that I remember first impacting me from those days were the Beastie Boys and Def Leppard. 🤣 Much to my parent's (later) chagrin, I have to say.

Get yo’ *shine* on. My favorite Beastie Boys song: Get It Together. There’s just something about that groove; I especially love Q-tip’s verse. Best video: 3 MC’s and 1 DJ (Mix Master Mike is a GOD among mere mortals on the turn tables). Favorite record: Ill Communication.
That three-record stretch including Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, and Ill Communication is as good a three-album stretch as anybody has ever done in music history. The variety and creativity that they accomplished in those records is truly second to none.
The other thing that doesn’t get mentioned as much as it should is just how much fun those guys were and how much fun their albums and videos are. Not only did they have the skills to pay the bills and they delivered so much great creativity, but they managed to make the end product a lot of fun too. I absolutely love how they did not take themselves too seriously.

So glad you appreciate Paul's Boutique! I felt like I was the only one in the world who liked that album when it dropped.
If you want a real hidden treasure, check out the track "Loc'in on the Shaw" by Ton Loc. The album, like Paul's Boutique, was produced by the Dust Brothers, and this track back in '89 is the first instance I am aware of of what would be called "Trip Hop" a decade later. Play it LOUD on a BIG system and smoke some weed. You will not regret it.

Shine.I'm glad the Beastie Boys get the love & respect from the fans & other artists thesedays. I've been down since Licensed to Ill, bought Paul's Boutique when it came out in '89 and never wavered. Similarly my other favorite band Black Sabbath has finally gotten the love & respect they earned starting 50+ years ago, especially Geezer Butler getting his due not only as the best bass player in rock & metal but as a thought-provoking lyricist for those incredible original 8 albums with Ozzy still in the band. Bill Ward & Geezer Butler were the bomb-ass rhythm section with the intricate beats & always prominent groovy yet heavy AF bass served as a bridge to hip-hop. It sounds strange but Sabbath & the Beasties have a lot of common elements, mainly each member was fire on their own and they wove the groove between them. The way that MCA, Adrock & Mike D switched up their parts and each song is densely packed with just money timing & phrasing. Sabbath did this as well because they were so rhythmic like Tony could hold the rhytyms with a wicked riff while Geezer played almost lead on bass with his runs & fills when a lot of other bass players basically just played the same thing the guitar player was playing. and Geezer would hold it down while Bill did some crazy swinging polyrhytms or played some unexpected jazz stuff. There was just such concentrated talent in both of these groups we are lucky to have had this music to contribute to our lives. I can't even imagine my life without their music. It's such a part of who i am. Wow.

Whoever booked them for Madonna without having a well-sold product to sell tickets saw the live show and thought 2 things, “entertaining and marketable”.

Great reaction my man, I've never seen this video, and I'm a long time B-boy fan. The only thing I'll add is, whether people agree, disagree or somewhere in between, with Murs, you can't say that he didn't give a fair assessment of their career, no sugar coating, or making excuses, so props to him for that!

I guess we aren’t including The Avalanches in the hiphop genre, because they have 900 legal samples on their album, and an additional 2600 illegal samples.
Thanks to Beasties for using The Avalanches to open their shows in Australia because I went to see Beasties and got two amazing bands.

Shine on man. Beastie Boys are always in my car. Spent my first years outta high school working at a grocery store. Was tripping, doing the runaround the whole county late at night, reciting License to Ill word for word. Love the vid man. I even learned a thing or two about em along the way. I gotta check out Murs' videos more Subbed!

In 1986 I was in line to buy the first LP in a small town in the mid west. I was called out and called names by the white community. I was but I still cranked the record player up in volume and let my pathetic neighborhood know the Beasties had arrived in this little town. Now days these kids are into the mumble "rap" crap i still to this day throw on some beasties and bump it. I'm 50 now and still love the beasties. thank you sooo much for reacting to Murs spot.

One of my favorite groups ever, listened since like 90 or so. Favorite song always has been Paul Revere, it was on a hip hop compilation cassette tape they'd have by the registers up front at Big Lots. Favorite album, Paul's Boutique, may be the first cd I ever owned in early 90s but looooove that album.

How I was introduced to the Beastie Boys: The company my step father worked for sponsored a carpool back in 86. He was given a van to do the carpool. One day I was checking out the van and found a cassette under the passenger's seat. It was Licensed to Ill.
I was aware of hip hop but really didn't know it at the time. I was totally into Iron Maiden and the like back then.
I was blown away. Rhymin and Stealing floored me. Honestly it was a moment of transformation for this white suburban kid at the time.
The rest of the record helped me to get hip hop even more. Fight For Your Right soon after was soon in heavy rotation. Can't lie I loved it at the time but it's one of the worst songs in their catalog.
I loved Paul's Boutique when it came out. I was shocked at the reception at the time. For me they were trying to blaze a new trail...turns out they were.
In hindsight that they were willing to alienate their white fan base by leaving Def Jam and re-creating themselves is a risk very few would be willing to take.
What a great decision it was. Licensed to Ill 2.0 would have been terrible.

Real talk. I didn’t think the Beastie’s would last past their first album. You had to see the protests to this group from parents, law enforcement, and the government. That live show was nothing more than them staggering around on stage chugging beers and throwing beer cans. But they grew, and continued to grow throughout their careers, putting out great music.
The same way that I look at Teena Marie as the greatest female R&B singer, The Beastie Boys earned their greatest status also.
