Wow the digital Hammond is amazing, it's very hard to tell there aren't some spinning tonewheels under there. I always thought that Africa should have had a Hammond in there and now there is. I love this version. It's amazing. You're a damn talented guy and I wish I could play the Hammond as well as you can.
Davey R this one isn’t the new digital portable - it’s his own build, fashioned from an A100, complete with spinning tone generator, constructed and reworked with connectors in a way that it breaks down into two parts for portability. :)
Ah right I didn't know that it was a chop. It really does have spinning tonewheels under the wood, that explains the sound. The A-100 is a pretty nice machine, a B-3/C-3 with it's own speakers basically. I wish I could find a chopped C3/A100 for home use (sadly my Hammond L-102 went a long time ago :'( ). I still remember the days of packing a Hammond in it's dolly and having to carefully and strenuously slide it into the back of a van. The chop was much easier, although not that much lighter! It'd tear your arms off if you tried to pick 'er up like a portable keyboard (bah! Hammond forever rather than Casio's poor imitation!). That caught a few people unawares (C-3 chop). As a teenager (we all were back in high school) in a school rock band we thought it was hilarious to try and get a newbie to lift the chopped Hammond solo before explaining it weighed about as much as a small planet. Even in the mid 2000s (2003-2006) we still used 1950s/60s tech.
Excellent interpretation very good sound. I think the lower keyboard has been midified. I love the Hammond organ. I have a B3000. Excuse me for my English. I am French, I live in France. Thanks
To a rock n roll or beach music musician, the B-3 Hammond is the Bentley and Rolls Royce of keyboards. Cannot afford one now but still love to tickle the ivories when I get close to one.
...or even a $250 Synth has good B tones... plus the synth tones you hear from the 2nd manual on this organ. Only one manual, but that's what sound editing is for. A small drum machine or sequencer app on your Mac or PC and you are your own orchestra!
I remember hearing somewhere that a guitar player plugged his equipment in through the Leslie speaker that came with a Hammond organ and that was the first guitar effect ever used, before the numerous stomp boxes we use today. Don’t know how true the story is, but I remember hearing something being said.
Love your rendiiton of the this song. I live in Africa and have always loved this song. Wish I have a Hammond B3. My techniques organ is broken at the moment. You inspire me to want to play this like you did it. Thank you!!
I am literally jumping up and down with joy bro.The Hammond is and always was a stunning awe inspiring instrument.Especially in talented hands like yours. And for that matter untalented ones like mine.lol.Such a mighty roar.Bravo sir
+X66B3 Dankjewel Co!
I can't work out whether you have midi-fitted the lower manual and are using it to trigger the synth or whether the synth is on the backingtrack and you're just playing organ behind it?
Lower manual has the sound quality of nice enveloped synth patch. Is this being done with the new overdrive unit? BTW this is a truly fine arrangement and execution.
Missed a couple great spots to throw in a big ass B 3 open palm glasando...play anythung on a B-3 and you got to have at least one phrase of "BALL SHAKIN SCREAMIN LESLIE BALL RATTLIN" or your just roller skatin..i carried my B3 with 2 leslies..mini moog. clavanova..vibes..and kiked courger bass peddles..and played trumpet with left hand...for 20 yrs..long befor internet etc..

Sounds great. I am also impressed about your very good recordings of Bach on Hammond! Interesting to hear that Bach really functional on Hammond. Bach and Hammond is on A100 with internal speakers? Your new portable is connected with rythm module and sound module?
Thanks! I still have the A100 and since a few weeks a C3!! Luxury... But I'm planning to make some new Bach recordings on my new Hammonds. For these recordings I use a MacBook pro and Logic. The portable now has a 147 leslie speaker instead of a 145; so now the sound is a bit warmer
+Gunni Konn Thanks! I bought a worn down A-100, took it apart, restored all the parts. After that I designed a complete new organ and connectors in order to devide the weight better over two pieces of "furniture". At first I didn't need any MIDI, but maybe I expand the pedalboard to D1 and think MIDI is the only solution.

I'm just curious how you are switching Leslie speeds during the performance as many of us Hammond players have the speed switch mounted on the facia left side. Are you using a foot switch? I always found having my left hand interrupted for a speed change a distraction of some sort.
I can switch both: by hand and by foot thanks to a "Arduino" motherboard inside the organ that controls the 3 speed relay in the Leslie speaker. I like this solution very much.

Hello. As a complete ignorant, the opening brass made me jump into "hey he's cheating, that sounds like a regular analog synthesizer" ! Am I missing something ? Can a Hammond do that ?
It can't do that! I doubled it with the hammond, the synth I recorded before making the drum track and the flute soud, a Hammond hasn't a drumcomputer eighter!
The set of keys on the left where the color is reversed between the natural and the flats. These are preset memory recall keys. You can save drawbar settings and then recall them with a touch of a button. The B series was WAY ahead of its time.
The organ is so beautiful if done correct. It's so _powerful_. It cuts straight through to you, the harmony of the notes together.
Another beautiful demonstration of the Hammond’s versatility. Well done!
Nothing compares to the sound of a Hammond.......sweet.....
This is just wonderful, this wants me to take to the kn7000 keyboard I’ve not touched in years. Absolutely brilliant 😀😀😀
Gros succès de Toto , Africa est une chanson que j'aime bien , et vous la jouez parfaitement avec votre nouvel orgue , bravo.

Hi Rein, when will you put again something on YT. There already past 8 years since the last post.
Необычная аранжировка этого хита группы Toto. Обычно главный клавишный инструмент там - синтезаторы. А тут вместо них - хаммонд-орган B3
Bravo!!
